This is why production for iPhone SE has already been cut? It hasn’t even been a month yet.

Probably. Although the demand might be low even if the cost was less. And @CWallace is probably right with respect to how production normally is managed.

I'm not their target audience for a smaller display phone anyway, but I guess I do give them some credit for offering both the SE and the 13 mini so that customers have a choice.

Lackluster is just being used as a substitute for cheap. So its cheap, uses a smaller screen, it doesn't have as many features. Likely a lot of people just want a iPhone for not as much money. But hey for only $270 more you can get a iPhone 13 mini. Thats a great phone for more money. You don't want the lackluster iPhone SE do you? :D

And Apple are still selling iPhone 12 mini too, making that price gap even smaller.

Definately has it's market and I am one of them, if my 8 dies I will get one of these. Personally I could care less about camera upgrades, I just want a basic phone, basic "good enough" camera, and light apps. Everything else I do on my iPad or MBP.

Yeah, expect when you factor in inflation. If you do that, the 2020 model comes out at $437 in 2022 dollars.

It's sad when not even editors get finance basics right.
This is not very relevant. Electronics prices do not follow inflation. In general, electronics has become cheaper and cheaper. Try to calculate what Macs from 20 years ago cost in todays dollars, and you would be shocked.

Do you realize that the "marketing shenanigans" and "distorted consumer shopping rationale" you're making fun of in the 2nd part of your post is exactly what you've bought into, as reflected with your first 2 sentences?

:)

But I agree with what you're saying.

By "cheap" you obviously don't mean price. You mean cheap "features" and "screen size," yet, absent comparing to the over-stuffed iPhone 13, the SE packs a wallop for the majority of users. Hell, I'm willing to bet the majority of iPhone SE users will never use the phone's and camera's full features, just like the majority of iPhone 13-type owners.

And this post by MR is kind of silly. "Most lackluster iPhone" is like saying "3rd fastest olympian on the podium."

Im on iphone 12, and the other half upgraded to the SE from a 7. Nothing wrong with it. They both do what we need them too.

I don't see the point in getting the top of the range phone is you use 50% of the features.

Factored in with a good deal from mobile carrier is only £15 extra per month compared to a previous SIM only deal.

"Lackluster"? Nothing like telling me how the article is going to be skewed before I ever read it.

Opinion is one thing, but state it. If this is an actual review, at least try to be objective and point out the Pros and Cons.

Frankly, the massive complaints by the usual suspects are to be expected since nothing Apple ever releases will satisfy them. Meanwhile, most people who willing choose this iPhone will be happy with it. This site is a microcosm of the hole that people have in their lives that tech won't ever fill.

Exactly.

MR articles with forced headlines like this one are like the forced innovations that sometimes unfortunately come out of Apple with more bad than good.

This article was not needed, but The Machine needs to keep producing and feeding exciting things to the public.

By the way, what exactly was hands-on about this article?

Hands-On With Apple's Most Lackluster Smartphone: The 2022 iPhone SE

Regurgitating facts about the (lackluster in our opinion) 2022 iPhone SE

This is the first time in my smartphone life that I’m not interested in upgrading. I’ve got an 11PRO. It’s doing well, I’m doing well. When this phone kicks the bucket, I’ll probably go with something like the SE or Mini as I figure by then the camera won’t be any worse than the one on my current phone AND I wouldn’t mind going back to finger print wake. As long as it takes decent pics (doesn’t have to be SLR quality) and it connects to my data in the cloud, then I’m really good. 5G wouldn’t be bad too but no rush on that.

For me the novelty of smartphones have worn off. It’s a tool to do what I need like a hammer, scissors, keys, or credit card. I take care of it but I don’t sit and play with my credit card all day. Maybe some people do. There used to be a time when features mattered but even the cheapest iPhone built today can do everything that I need.

Apple should've kept the 2nd generation iPhone SE in the line up as it is, price reduced to $349.

Apple should've used $499 iPhone 11 as the template for 3rd generation iPhone SE. Upgrade it to A15 and remove ultra wide camera lens and Face ID. Slap an iPad Air-style Touch ID sleep/wake button and we have a $399-429 3rd generation iPhone SE (5G isn't necessary at this price point).

There is rumor that this generation iPhone SE will be the FINAL iPhone that features the design language that was introduced with the first iPhone. (Home button, etc)

Next gen iPhone SE is supposedly based on iPhone mini series.

Exactly the use of "lackluster" for a thread title is clickbait. It's a more reasonable product than the more capable iPhone 13 Mini. Yes the thread would have generated somewhat different responses it it had been entitled "Hands-On With Apple's Most Cheap Smartphone: The 2022 iPhone SE" wouldn't it? :p

There’s some serious spin in the end of this article predicting future sales. This isn’ta low cost alternative, it’sa tired, obsolete design Frankenstein from various obsolete components. There was no justification for the price increase as Apple widened the gap between its low cost option and its flagship from the last iteration of the SE.

At the end of the day, the SE is overpriced for what it is, and people aren’t willing to pay that much for a lackluster upgrade, especially if they don’t really care about having the latest and greatest. Six months from now, it may be cheaper, but it will also be six months old in a market where a new phone comes out every month.
