Funny you mention this. Reminds me of Steve Jobs style

iu

Jobs specifically mentioned when he came back to Apple he was confused by the overwhelming Mac offerings made by Apple.

And just about 12 months later he added a quadrant back with the G4 Cube.

Then within a few years they'd have multiple iMac sizes, multiple iBook sizes, the eMac...people really think that four quadrant box was a thing longer than it actually was.

The proliferation of Performa models was because B&M retailers wanted their own special SKUs and bundle packages. That isn't even a thing anymore.

My prediction is that Apple will move the iPad Pro camera module to landscape, positioning it slightly further down on the screen. They will sell that move by adding dynamic island. That will give them the additional room needed to keep the Gen 2 Apple Pencil magnetic charging in the same place and still move the camera.

I predict next year we will see a Pencil 3 to go with the M3 iPad Pros. The pencil will have two smaller magnets on either side of the camera instead of a larger, single centered magnet that the Pencil 2 uses.

No, I don't, because there are a ton of use cases for iPad that do not involve Apple Pencil, and it's fine for devices in the lineup to reflect that. There are a ton of customers that will never buy an Apple Pencil. In fact probably most of the low-end iPad customers do not buy Apple Pencil. More than most. And this is truer for the low end iPad than it is for mid and high.

For people who are a bigger fan of the Apple Pencil than they are of iPad itself, I'm unmoved and unconvinced that the lineup needs to reflect you at all.
I would argue that both segments justify full attention from Apple and the two different devices deserve to be priced accordingly. Also I strongly believe Apple should have a third segment: a loss-leader double-tough iPad aimed at kids, Apple's best entry level. It could be coordinated with Swift for Kids marketing. It is NUTS that Apple marketing has not long ago demanded that Apple engineering build a tough device aimed at kids. Some Marketing managers need replacing.

This iPad is a beta test to see what users like and dislike about it. Next round of iPad Pros will have the best features of this iPad. iPad line up will also be smaller. iPad mini, iPad, iPad Pro. I think the base and Air will be gone by mid next year. In the past when apple has an "Air" series it's just to word on the new base model. Its only a matter of time before the MacBook Air is a MacBook again
The above comment makes no sense since the MacBook Air is now in its ~14th year and the iPad Air is in its ~9th year.

It’s silly to me they didn’t just slap an A15 in this one to bring more parity with the mini. I’m no analyst or accountant but it seems like it would’ve made the overall price easier to swallow and perhaps extra interest (and sales) could have offset the cost. But what do I know.
All these different iPad configurations may have something to do with cost/availability of various chips.

I agree that Apple should have an iPad aimed at kids.

Apple has been making iPads aimed at kids for years. There’s millions of them out there, they just don’t have a specific defined name. It’s more like “all the underused unsold iPads that didn’t get thrown out or recycled”. I’ve seen many in tough cases just lying wherever they used it last. :)

Many folks would be surprised to find that kids don’t care much about laminated screens, macOS dual booting, when it was released or how much RAM is in the device they’re using. Their most vocal concern appears that be that it’s “MINE!” Everything else? They’re realllly flexible on.

I have iPad Pro M2 which I use primarily for writing and reading. I don't see much difference between iPad Pro with A12Z vs the M2. The M2 display is more contrasty (and I like its deeper blacks) and that's much it. I don't see a performance boost (again, it's already fast in A12Z) and I don't really care about the hover feature. It's not that interesting at this point. Really, the iPad Pro even from 4 years ago is already fast as it is and will last for a long time. I had to run the Geekbench and it did confirm that it's much twice faster than my old iPad Pro but I don't see it. It feels the same. It's definitely not worth upgrading if you only use it for reading and consuming content.

Now, someone has to go the next steps and create the chart containing ALLL the different configurations of each of those, including each separate iteration and resulting price of of each RAM and storage configuration. I’m quite certain it would end up with a total of MORE than 22 discrete configurations.

It’s amazing that folks were able to buy Macs with all those choices they had to make!

Not exactly, the iPad comes in at least four different models: regular, Air, Pro and mini. Its not just all ipad with configurations. Plus these configurations are not upgradable you are stuck with them. Unlike imac or ibook you could upgrade your HDD or RAM in the future. So you have to choose wisely.

I think it’s a bit of a cheek even referring to this as the ‘low cost iPad’ to be honest. It’s not a low cost iPad with a huge price increase like that. It’s £500 starting price here and the only low cost iPad is last years 9th gen which now has a much higher demand since this strange overpriced, poor spec’d 10 came out.

yeah £500 is not entry...its expensive.

still was more understandable than the mess that it is today.

IPad comes in Pro, Air, “plain” and mini… you’re right 4 models is way more than 4 models.

Not exactly...those 4 models also divide even more in customization option. Cellular , pencil support, screen size...etc. It doesn't end there though, then you have the iphone line, laptops line...etc.

If we had 1 iPad model with different customization I could agree it meets the Job's matrix simplicity, but we have 4 different models each with its own set of customization.

In Job's matrix things are much easier. Are you a regular consumer? pick the iMac. Do you use it for extensive work? pick Mac Pro.

The iPad lineup has become a mess. The difference between models is confusing and there is no clear refresh schedule - Apple just drops a new iPad whenever they feel like it.
That is not so. IPad, iPad Air, iPad Pro.

The only one that makes little sense is the Mini given it’s now marketed as a smaller version of the Air and priced above the 9th and now 10th Gen iPad. The Mini has little to no value in the mainstream unless you absolutely love the screen size. Otherwise it’s not a good bang-for-the-buck.

The current popular meme for hot takes is “the iPad lineup is confusing”. Likely in the same way that Rock and Roll was confusing. :) For every potential customer that finds it confusing, it’s not for them. Lucky for Apple there’s 30 to 40 million people that a year that aren’t confused.

Lucky for Mac users, Apple drastically reduced the number of configuration options for the Mac. All that variety of Intel processors, RAM and storage must have been paralyzing. Maybe that’s why the MBAir sells so well? Simple selections!

It took me awhile to figure out what the difference was between the iPad Air and Pro was when I was going to buy. I finally decided that the Air is just a cheaper "Pro" and went with that. For me I don't really understand where the Air is supposed to fit in. It seems like there should just be the iPad and iPad Pro like there is for the iPhone.

It looks like Apple is trying to fill numerous price niches with the iPad lineup. Yes, the Air is a detuned Pro because many don’t need the capabilities of the Pro. In this sense the iPad 10 is a detuned Air and the 9 is presently a detuned 10.

The Mini is still the odd man out.

Question regarding buying the M2 IPad If I trade in old one M1 instore and buy a new M2 with non Apple credit card? Will I get instant credit or a gift card To use on the purchase? Unlike online where you have to use Apple Card monthly payments?
