everybody CHILL lol
You are not required to buy this product. I repeat, you are NOT required.
But all jokes and sarcasm aside,
I really like it. And the fact that I can go pick that up for 200? I like that even more so.
A lot of people might have a cheap Android, but want iOS experience. Here ya go.
A lot of people might have an iPhone, but need the iPod as a secondary device for convenience.
I mean the list is endless, and again they're only charging 200 which sounds reasonable to me.
I might want to just keep and iPod touch or 2 around the house to check news, email, whatever because I don't feel like carrying my phone around.
I mean seriously folks, it's almost like an iPhone without the phone for 200 iMessage and facetime included...
Who can complain about that??????????
And for $249 Apple is selling the 32GB SE, with more features and better specs, with the exception of having an A9 vs. an A10 processor — yet they’ve discontinued that model. I’d prefer that any day over this.
I’m still trying to understand why Apple thinks I would pay $200 for a 7 year old device with a 3 year old chip, for something which even according to your own list of reasons to own, is nothing more than a non-essential extravagance. Other than Enterprise considerations, this device flys in the face of Apple’s typical M.O. in that it otherwise caters to a consumer niche market with such a low profit margins it wouldn’t otherwise make sense. You keep saying “a lot of people” might want the device for some niche purpose, but that’s not a lot of people in terms of Apple’s individual product’s customer base.
If Apple positioned this with a VOIP phone app it would make more sense for consumer use, maybe. But even then, there’s not even optional connectivity with a cellular network to make use of Apple’s new core services of subscription music, video and gaming. What would have made more sense was dropping the cellular radio from the SE and offering it as an entry level iPod device for those few consumers who might want that, and continuing to offer the regular SE with an A10 chip. Or a true gaming device with a larger display, like the iPhone 7 without a cellular radio — one that could actually run Fortnite for instance. In fact — as has been brought up numerous times — the iPhone 7 is actually a much better value than the iPod Touch, with or without activating the cellular network.
Enterprise considerations notwithstanding, Apple would have made a better consumer choice launching the iPhone 7 in multiple colors with a new iPad/Apple Watch-like data plan where the network service could be added nominally to a family plan. The carrier-free model could come with an Apple SIM that didn’t require activation to run like an iPod. Then customers would have the ability to enable it should they ever need the cellular network — or again, drop the cellular radio for a base model while continuing to offer the phone.
Or, how about just using an Apple Watch for these things? That’s the future of Apple’s business, and addresses most of the uses you outline the need for an iPod Touch. For the same money, one can get an Apple Watch. And the iPod Touch doesn’t even support the Apple Watch! Now that’s a real reason for buying an iPod Touch — an Android customer who needs an iOS device to use an Apple Watch. That seems like a missed opportunity.
It’s nice you see the limited value here for yourself, but it’s very odd by Apple’s standards — at least as a consumer product, especially when they’ve discontinued other products like the SE which were far more useful to general consumers.
