Once upon a time, companies made interesting products, not to squeeze every penny out of us, but just to be interesting.

....interesting you say? So interesting, that its a contender for one of the worst designs of the century:

The cameras will take even more space inside. How in the world will the iPhone get thinner without sacrificing something?

That's the entire point of a camera bump -- it lets you keep the necessary thickness to accommodate the cameras while making the phone body as thin as desired.

Good year to sit this one out. iOS 13 will bring enough changes and improvements. Curious to see just exactly how the new phones will look, as well as any new colors on the XR.

Who's coming up with these designs these days ? Have they lost their designer or something ? i know the trend is usually other phone manufacturers usually follow some design aspect from apple.. but this is something already existent (more than 2 cameras i mean) and this box design looks horrible.

I'll withhold comments on the phone styling until I see the actual phones. Who knows, maybe they'll find a way to make them look good, even with such a huge camera area.

So I’ve got a 7 and my wife a 6. Given the 6 won’t get iOS 13 i was thinking about replacing that for a new September iPhone, or an XS at that point as the year old model. The phones are essentially fine, and both got a new battery within the past year. I just don’t like having devices that don’t get software/security updates. I'm not too fussed about the big camera bump, just the price... it’s been a while since I bought a new phone! Hoping for maybe £100 for trade in, but there’s no chance that the start price will drop by a hundred is there?! ;)

Apple better really revamp the camera if they are going the huge bump route. Google and others have been outshining the iphone with less lenses and bumps.
And yet, it hasn't translated to sales for Google. And let's be serious. The only phone that consistently competes in photo quality with the XS is the Pixel 3. The iPhone XS Max still does some things better like video and portrait and many other areas are personal preference.

Pixel 3 sales are worse than Pixel 2, according to Google.

Rumors about the iPhones coming in 2019 have been circulating since before the 2018 iPhones even launched, and at this point, we've heard quite a few details on what to expect.

For our most recent YouTube video, we got our hands on some cases created for the 2019 iPhones, with designs based on current rumors suggesting a triple-lens camera setup for the next-generation iPhone XS and XS Max, and a dual-lens camera for the next-generation iPhone XR.

Cases for upcoming iPhones often appear months before the iPhones themselves, and that's because there's a lot of money to be made being the first company out with cases designed for newly released devices.

Many of the renderings and part leaks that we see for new iPhones, the 2019 iPhone lineup included, come from case makers who pay people in Apple's supply chain for design information in order to create early versions of cases. More often than not, these super early cases are spot on, but there have been some major misses in the past.

2019iphonecases1-800x450.jpg

This year, Apple is said to be launching three iPhones: an iPhone XS successor, an iPhone XS Max successor, and an iPhone XR successor. These three phones will be available in the same sizes as current iPhones, 5.8 inches, 6.5 inches, and 6.1 inches, respectively.

The 5.8 and 6.5-inch models will continue to offer OLED displays and will be positioned as the higher-end iPhones in the lineup, while the 6.1-inch iPhone is expected to continue to offer an LCD display and a lower price tag.

2019iphonecases2-800x450.jpg

As you can see in the 5.8 and 6.5-inch cases, the next-generation iPhone XS and XS Max are rumored to include a triple-lens camera setup arranged in a triangular shape with an adjacent flash. This design requires a large square-shaped camera cutout for the cases, which looks quite obtrusive when seen in case form.

Apple's going to do what it can to minimize the look of the rear camera, which will still protrude, with rumors suggesting the rear panel will be made from a single pane of glass. This should make the camera bump blend in a bit better, so we can expect Apple's version to look better than renderings we've seen.

2019iphonecases3-800x450.jpg

The triple-lens camera setup could include a 12-megapixel telephoto lens, a 12-megapixel wide-angle lens, and a 12-megapixel super wide-angle lens with a wider field of view for landscape shots.

It's not really clear what capabilities Apple will add into a triple-lens camera, but at a minimum, we can expect a wider zoom range, better low light performance, more pixels captured, and a larger field of view. Given some of the highly touted camera features from Android phones, like the Night Sight mode on the recent Pixel devices, we can likely expect some similar features from Apple.

There could perhaps be a mode for significantly brightening up darker scenes, and Bloomberg has suggested Apple is working on a feature that will use extra pixel data to offer up tools for doing things like fitting in a subject that may have been cut off from an initial shot.

All of these cases have a large square camera cutout, but the successor to the iPhone XR isn't expected to have the same triple-lens camera setup. Instead, it's rumored to have a dual-lens camera, which is still an upgrade from the single-lens camera in the current iPhone XR.

In our testing, these cases fit the current iPhones perfectly with the exception of the new camera cutouts, as beyond camera tweaks, we're not expecting any major design changes. The 2019 iPhone lineup will look quite a lot like the 2018 iPhone lineup, but in addition to camera changes, Apple may also be planning a new frosted glass design for its OLED devices and new colors for the iPhone XR successor.

Rumors have suggested the new iPhones could be a tad bit thicker than the current models, but that's not noticeable with the cases and is such a small change that it may be imperceptible in real life. There are also some adjustments to button placement, so the buttons could be moved a bit.

There have been rumors that Apple's 2019 iPhone lineup will use a round iPad-style mute switch in a pill-shaped cutout instead of a traditional bar mute switch, which could account for some of the button differences.

Other rumors have indicated the 2019 iPhones will feature bilateral wireless charging (so you can charge your AirPods or other wireless devices), larger batteries, Lightning connectors, WiFi 6 for faster WiFi speeds, and an 18W power adapter for faster charging right out of the box.

What do you think of the design of the 2019 iPhones? Let us know in the comments.

(Thanks to Sonny Dickson for helping us get our hands on these cases!)

If you are worried about price, look at the XR. Lots of battery, same processor as the XS and much cheaper.

Eh the new Huawei devices outperform the iphone as well. The iphone has a lot to work on to catch up to others. Yes video is great, but the camera still needs work.

I don't see tests that show any consistent outperformance of every day photos, portraits, etc from Huawei versus iPhone.

Huawei has a cool/gimmick/creepy zoom feature and a cool night shot feature. Most photos aren't taken using that functionality and I've seen plenty of testing that shows better iPhone pictures in those cases.

The night shot feature from Google and Huawei is definitely cool, but still artificial and can really make certain situations look silly and inaccurate. Not always a positive. Apple is absolutely "in the conversation" of top cameras, was the original point. There is literally no clear winner anymore.

I really hope this is just a game Apple is playing to make everyone think this is what the new iPhones are going to look like, and then once they are unveiled it is a beautifully designed phone, with a great camera system (front and back) without this ridiculously ugly protruding cube!

Ahh, one can dream I guess...

Jony Ive must be losing his mind from staying in his design lab basically 24/7, suffering from mass sleep deprivation, to even possibly make an iPhone with a rear camera system that ugly. In my opinion he needs to go, or at least give some of the up and coming designers a little more say in how new devices are designed.

:apple:

What Apple really needs to fix is a major video issue that has been going on for years now. I have a 6 and when you put that phone on a tripod to record video it is rock solid. I bought a 7 because the camera was supposed to be better and then a X for the same reason. Nope neither one is any good on a tripod. If there is even a slight vibration the video images shakes so bad the footage is useless. For example try and record a school play with a tripod. if the floor of the auditorium is wood and someone walks or taps their foot the image vibrates so bad it is unusable. I tried all the different video apps and even contacted Filmic Pro and they said they are aware but that it was the phone and nothing softwarewise could correct it.

This is a prime example of when it’s time to move on from a smartphone to a dedicated compact camera.

Apple is trying to market these phones as do-anything cameras (probably to help justify their high prices and because there’s little else they can do at this point) but in reality they’re not.

It’s amazing what you can get for your money if you’re a savvy buyer. The camera market moves quickly and excellent superseded cameras can be found for a bargain all the time.

That's brilliant. They should make a paper thin iPhone with camera bump, battery bump, and screen bump. Thinnest iPhone ever!

I hope it's a joke. the design of the new iPhone may not be so low-level!

I wasn’t talking about thickness. I was talking about the footprint of the camera module. It went from two cameras to three cameras. The area of the bump will increase not the height of the bump (which is very obvious but somehow you don’t understand). Which may result in a smaller volume for battery.

I do understand, but my response was directed at a different post. Not sure why it now shows up under yours, which I hadn't previously seen. You're obviously correct that more cameras take more space.

only way I can see myself upgrading from my iPhone X is if the new iPhone has USB-C. That alone is worth the $1k upgrade price to me. After that I doubt i will upgrade again before it breaks
