iOS 9 multitasking was probably the most exciting part of this year's WWDC keynote for me.

Oh, question: Is this feature limited to landscape, or does it work in portrait as well?

I wanna know this too. I'm surprised MR video never mentioned it.

They even forgot that after you slide over there's a handle that will appear to let you know when the opened app supports split view.

iPad Multitasking = 4:53

The guy in the video makingdots posted said multitasking works in landscape and portrait mode. But he didn't actually show it. -_-

I think they should put 'picture in picture' and possibly 'slide over' in the next iPhone Plus.

It's going to take a lot more than multitasking to make the iPad come anywhere near a Mac laptop for productivity.

Multitasking was a huge part of iPad's limitation for me. The other huge part is file management. What else are you looking for (if anything)?

What do you guys think... Is Split View tied to the larger sceen size or would this be available on the next mini as well because its ram/cpu related?

Stop inter-mixing terminology ... multitasking, split-view and slide-over are three different things. iDevices have had multi-tasking for ages, slide-over is new and supported on many devices, and split-view only on Air 2.

I wonder if/how Safaris' forward/backward guestures work on iOS9. Any suggestions?

It's clear that some people don't understand how these new Multitasking capabilities really work. I watched the session from WWDC where they explained how developers should optimize their apps for this, and it showed that three things are being used: RAM, CPU and I/O. Memory is being used more than CPU and I/O of course, but in another way. It uses adaptive NSCache for example. CPU and I/O still take quite a part of the resources needed for the multitasking capabilities. See image I took from that session below.

Not going further into the deep stuff, since I am not an actual developer. But I like watching those videos and I found that out. Thought it would make sense sharing this with your guys. :)

By the way, those who are interested in watching that session themselves: the session is called 'Optimizing Your App for Multitasking on iPad in iOS 9'

Great, I hope so. That's one of my big complaints on the surface pro, which only does landscape. Watching video, especially, makes a lot of sense in portrait multitasking.

To be clear, the split is still vertical in portrait, so you have 2 apps side-by-side, not one on top of the other.
I've not tried PiP in portrait as I don't actually use the in-built player for anything

Eh, that's too bad. I'd presume one of the big uses people would have for side by side apps is watching video or video calling. Why not allow the app to display that video on the best aspect ratio?

I'm looking forward to split screen multitasking on my Air 2.

However, the way to enable it looks pretty clunky in this video. It looks as though you have to first go into Slideover mode, then Split view, then drag over to change into 50/50 Split screen.

Here's my suggestion to Apple: tap and hold on an app icon, like you would to move or delete an app. You then tap another app icon for the one you wish to have Split screen. Tap Done, and Bingo! There are your two apps Split screen.

You don't have to do the middle step. Go into Slide Over (a compatible app will show the splitter handle), then drag that splitter to 50/50

Thanks. That makes it smoother. I also see that if one has already enabled it and quits to the Home screen, tapping one of the Split screen apps automatically opens it in Split screen.

I still would like a way to move straight to 50/50 rather than the two steps it currently takes.

What would be quite nice is if you could create Split View Sets ... so you can save pairs of apps in Split View that you can launch again later from the home screen.

That's assuming everyone wants to work like you :) some may prioritise just flicking out an app, doing something and then dismissing it.

Does the video viewer window work with other apps? I doubt it but it would be awesome to for apps that stream live TV to be able to keep them on the screen in the smaller window that moves around

I'd say Surface by Microsoft is dead with these new iOS technologies, but Surface has never really been alive in the marketplace.

You're not paying attention. Surface has been doing well and can do true multi-tasking with actual split windows. They got that right. It's Apple that took too long to get split windows available for iOS when it should've been released earlier on.

And for the record, Surface is growing popular by working professionals, especially in digital and graphic arts field. Trust me. I KNOW what I'm talking bout. Wacom and Surface are two of the most popular methods of input for the creative professionals, not iOS.

And it appears to me that the multi-tasking sidebar is actually a revamped version of the old double-click home button method.

So golden lesson for you is arrogance will bite you in the a$$ and it will Apple. Where's your beloved revamped Apple TV? Not here. Where's Apple's foray into Augmented Reality? Not here yet and falling behind. How's your iTunes and Apple Music? Oh wait, what a mess isn't it? How did you like Cue's messy live performance with his lazy getup? Open. your. EYES. Apple. is. getting. LAZY.

Yea it's the windows surface video from a few years back.

Is your point that it's very impressive that Apple could add a feature to their product that rapidly, that was previously only on a much more powerful device, running a full desktop OS, and coming in at double the price?

I have been waiting for this on the iPad. It was the most glaring thing missing. Now, IMHO, the next thing is a keyboard. I still strongly believe that to make this a post PC PC, it needs a physical keyboard option. There are a lot of third party solutions out their, but it would be nice to have an official Apple version. And clearly we continue to see the difference between the iPad and MacBook shrinking. There is a difference still, but it is not as big as between the first iPad and the Macbook at that time.
