These big wide monitors still make no sense at all until prices come down.

I can buy 3 x 32" 4k monitors and still have $200 left over.
That is way more pixels and usable space for the money.

This looks fantastic for my needs: music! I could fit the Logic Pro main window and mixer side by side, which right now requires two monitors. Then use a extra monitor for show whatever video I’m scoring to.

It wouldn’t fit with my current iMac setup. Hmmm.....

They're partly driven by gaming, but they're great for productivity too. The extra workspace is fantastic for video editors, and for me personally as a Substance Designer guy, having a super wide view of the graph is great.

I prefer having a ton of crappy monitors over having one large one, except when it comes to ease-of-setup. It's way easier to just maximize everything per-monitor than it is to manage my windows.

We tried a USB-C cable, a DisplayPort to USB-C cable, a Thunderbolt 3 dock, and an eGPU and weren't able to get the full 5120 x 1440 resolution. With an iMac Pro, though, we were able to run the display at full resolution over USB-C. It's probably also going to work well with the 2013 Mac Pro (or one of the new 2019 Mac Pro models, of course), but for Mac notebooks, we don't recommend it.​

There have been other reports from Mac users who have also been unable to get the display to work at full resolution with their machines, while others have had no trouble at all, so it's not entirely clear what's going on.

I would have tried two video outputs from the MacBook Pro to two inputs on the monitor for a side by side arrangement. Then just stretch your left screen window (option-green button to keep it windowed and not full screen) over to the right screen.

Even if you are able to run it at its native resolution, 5120 x 1440 for a 49" monitor would give you 109 pixels per inch. That’s pretty low considering that my iPad pixel density is more than 2.5 times denser.

That does work as I tried it with a USB-C to USB-C and a USB-C to DP and set the monitor to split screen with using the two inputs, except you don't get the dock centered and the menu bar doesn't go all the way across.

it's not that bad, allowing a 20C rise and 2 mil thick microstrip you need a width of 1cm to carry 22 amps.

One thing I don’t really understand is, I’m always looking for a taller monitor to fit in my limited desk space, not wider.

This is one thing I don't get, either. I work in Xcode, so I've got two or three editor windows open. I want to see as much lines (of code) as possible. This monitor offers a mere 1400 pixels vertical resolution. Any $300 4k monitor offers (depending on scaling) about 2000.

Width need another 200mm
Vertical height need at least another 100mm vertical height, 150mm would be fine.

FFS you @ssclowns make a panel with a vertical height closer but more than a 30" 2560x1600 panel (perhaps 50mm more vertical) and as wide as 2 and a half to 3 x 30" 2560x1600 (1500-1600mm wide panels and make it curved.

Or maybe just look up USB-C specs to find out that it goes up to 20V (aka 4A for 80W).

I assume sales of these ultra-wide monitors are driven by gaming, but are there really not enough people using monitors for things other than video consumption and gaming to justify producing monitors in anything other than increasingly wide aspect ratios?

This kind of screen is for people working in the video Industry. It’s actually awesome for a long editing timeline or a 3D software with lots of panels opened. Just wish it was retina 😉

wide monitors are great for stock trading or charting. I love my 34" for that main reason. I didnt want to have to separate monitors.

Apple engineers only seem to test MacOS using 12 inch MacBooks. If you do connect a large external monitor like this LG, you may as well cover the entire screen with a sheet of cardboard and then cut out a section in the bottom left corner.

Below are examples of working with applications and Finder windows on a MacBook Pro laptop screen, then connecting a 30 inch, 2560x1600 monitor as the main display.

1. Finder windows that were in the top left corner or the center of the laptop screen now open in the bottom left corner of the 30 inch monitor.
2. Applications such as Photos, News, Stocks which I put in the center of the laptop screen now open in the bottom left corner of the 30 inch monitor.
3. Documents from applications such as Keynote and Omnigraffle which filled the laptop screen now open in the bottom left corner of the 30 inch monitor.
4. DMG disk image files for various downloaded applications frequently open in the in the bottom left corner of the 30 inch monitor by default.
5. Some applications such as DVD Player in MacOS 10.14 Mojave keep opening in the bottom left corner of the 30 inch monitor no matter how many times I move the application window.

I first noticed these issues in Yosemite 10.10 and they continue to this day. If you think this looks annoying on a 30 inch monitor, imagine how it will look on this massively wide LG display. I have never seen an operating system handle window positioning as STUPIDLY as MacOS.

I wish Apple could have a stand alone 5k display at the same price point. I love the 6K display but that price is painful to say the least.

My boss prints out Excel spreadsheets on two landscape 11 x 17 sheets of paper and tapes them together. This is her dream display! :lol:

Since Mojave doesn't have subpixel anti-aliasing like High Sierra did, any non-retina screens are now a no-op for me. I have 21:9 screen that I used to like, but now is blurry. Unfortunately, Retina-level displays are now really difficult to find.
