The old silver remote from the older Apple TVs works just fine with the 4K - it's what I use. The only real downside is it doesn't have volume controls.

Why doesn’t volume control of AirPods show up on Apple Watch when connected to ATV, Apple? Like you do with the phone?

Just because Apple didn't "invent" it is no excuse; heck, just give the Salt company a fistful of dollars and license it at least; sell it as an overpriced accessory in the Apple Store. People will buy it.

Not all of Jony Ivie's designs are worthy of keeping around.... the butterfly keyboard, the trashcan Mac Pro, the MacBook with one USB-C port (!) .... sometimes you wonder if anyone at Apple actually tries any of their products outside of their UFO.
Truth is a dish better served cold.

If I replace a remote control, it will be for a universal remote. I don't see the point of yet another remote that controls only one device.

Unfortunately, there aren't many true universal remotes out there.

I would love to have this remote to replace my Apple TV remote even though I would miss the Siri button for when I am searching for something. My #1 complaint with the current remote is that it is too symmetrical and I pick it up upside down at least half of the time because I am normally using it in a darkened room. My #2 complaint is that I frequently accidentally perform some function when picking up the remote because of the touchpad. I hope Apple gives us something close to this remote with the rumored new Apple TV mentioned in iOS 13.

Check out the elago R1 Intelli case on amazon. I had the exact same complaint. I saw a review for it a few months ago & got one for around $8. It w a little silicone cover that covers the bottom half of the remote (under the buttons) so it is no longer symmetrical. Probably the bet accessory I've ever purchased for my Apple TV.

I love the Apple remote! No more remotes with too many tiny little buttons that you need the lights on to push. (And if you memorized it, you watch way too much tv)
Both my son-in-laws set up their tvs to work with their Samsung and lg remotes and cable remotes, so not really seeing the issue here

The "normal" remote is really the epitome of Jony Ive's tenure at Apple - it's all about design with absolutely no thought as to usability.
How so? I don’t think anybody looks at Apple‘s remote and says wow that’s beautiful. I don‘t use the remote I use my iPhone. But mostly I use my Roku remote that came with my TV.

No touch. No Siri. No home button. No sale.

I love the design of the ATV 4 remote. I regard it for its design fairly regularly.

As soon as my 2017 Samsung TV identifies the device as a apple tv, my Samsung remote starts working automatically with it.

I "accidentally" discovered, that my Apple TV works perfect, using the Remote of my Philips UHD-TV. Working the way, tradiotional remotes use to.

... I will try to get a Salt remote in one of their shops. Yes, I happen to live in the right country for this attempt, although no customer of Salt.

The problem of the original remote: Salt - as other cable companies - offer a traditional tv subscription. You have about 200 linear channels, zappable, chosing them by their number on the remote and so on. So, you need numbers on your remote, you need an up/down switch, a volume up/down and so on.
Many tradiotional customers just get completely confused with something like the Apple remote. I am doing support in Switzerland. Believe me: do not try to explain it to someone, who just wants to watch tv-channels...

With my ATV 4K (which is not on a 4K TV haha), I prefer to use either my old silver remote or my iPhone remote app. But...

- Even the latest iteration of the remote (which I have) is way too easy to grab and attempt to use upside-down.

- The sometimes-you-swipe, sometimes-you-click navigation is... sub-optimal at best and completely non-intuitive.

- The Apple TV's linear input function - the design of which was completely driven by the design of the remote - is flat-out bad.

Fortunately being able to use the soft keyboard on your iPhone or iPad mostly solves the input problem. But it doesn't seem like any thought or testing was put into how well/poorly the remote is to actually using as a remote!

The only thing I like better than the Apple TV 4K remote is the built in remote in Control Center in iOS.
