Oh you are right, forgot about the Touch ID on the keyboard. I guess this one is just bigger and more noticeable. But yeah for sure.

Yup all good reasons to make the move. It seems to be a pretty sizeable upgrade from the 2020 i3 MBA.
Did you trade-in your i3? If so, how much did Apple Pay for it? I might do the same.

I was going to but ended up selling it locally for a bit more. I think apple was offering $375 which was just too low to do that.
Yeah, for $375, I might be better off giving it to a family member that is struggling on an old machine. I think my dad has a 2010 MBP clamshell in his den, and he no longer gets system updates.

Several posts have wondered about M2 MBA thermals
Once again running extreme benchmark tests on it. But the headline just will spread about the SSD being slow (his other videos) and it throttles. He was encoding 8K on a base model MacBook Air for goodness sake.

And then we have college students looking to write some papers and use YouTube asking if these "issues" will have an effect on them.

Agree...However, a potential customer should be aware the Midnight colour is a FINGERPRINT MAGNET!
Apple has an accessory for that. ;) Though any microfiber cloth should work.

Starlight is a nice color, too, and should show fingerprints less.

It's psychological, but I like having the color in between the keys. On the 14" MBP, the keys blend together in a sea of black.
Yeah. You’re probably just not used to it. I’ve been using MBA ten years and also prefer what you’re saying. I think we’d adapt though.

Random thoughts: just tested M2 Air in a store here and noticed I very much prefer the slimness (curved edges and its tapered to nothing front) of my old current 2015 MBA. The compactness and chunkiness of the M2 Air also made it feel equal in weight to my slightly heavier machine. Hmm. Here I was concerned with the chunkiness of the newer MBP machines. New M2 MBA feels no model of thinness itself. New Air is in a strange position given its losing some of its slimness.

I remember when I had my 2012 Retina 15" MBP, and I was using it to play Diablo 3 when it first came out, it got very hot. Common things people use a laptop create heat, this is nothing more then knowing in advance how it works.

For the majority of people, they won't run into throttling. And if they are consistently running into it, then a MacBook Air was the wrong choice for them.

Only matters if I'm putting my laptop in a beauty contest though
I don't think that's a fair assessment. I'm not particularly OCD but I try to keep my stuff relatively clean, and it seems like midnight is just a color not for people like me because it seems to show smudges and fingerprints a lot more than say space grey does. I feel the same way about glossy piano black car interiors.

I should have said "Only matters to me" there cause I just meant personally. I can for sure understand it mattering to others.

Happy MacBook Air launch day! Today is the official debut date of the new M2 MacBook Air, which features the first major redesign to the MacBook Air in a decade. We picked up one of the new M2 MacBook Air machines and decided to do a hands-on video where we answer questions from MacRumors readers.

The M2 MacBook Air no longer has a tapered design, and it instead looks a lot more like the MacBook Pro. It's thinner and lighter than the prior model, and it comes in new colors that include Midnight and Starlight.

In the video, we answer questions about the M2 chip's performance for everyday tasks, the SSD storage you should choose and what you need to know about the SSD, whether you should upgrade the RAM, how the M2 chip compares to the M1 Pro chip, how the display measures up to the prior-generation MacBook Air, and tons more.

You'll want to watch our video for our full MacBook Air overview that includes details MacRumors readers wanted to know, but we also want to hear from you. Have a new M2 MacBook Air? Let us know what you think of it in the comments.

I really despair at everyone of these peoples questions. They just show the modern use in ability for rational thought, research, paying attention, or doing any kind of searching for themselves. They want everything handed to them and they want to make no effort to find the information for themselves.

Every. Single. Thing. That this video goes into detail about was known at launch day and in the specs on Apple‘s own website. Nobody asked any questions about how well this one is logic of what kind of size project in Xcode does this start to chug at. It beggars belief that people are so incapable of reading basic information that is provided to them the entire video has been wasted asking stupid questions.

Glossy in cars is the worst. Whoever started that trend needs to stop it.

You've just described most all YouTubers

They do it because it seems to work
IMHO the best YouTube videos are always from someone that works in a particular field and describes how the software performs on that Mac. A close second is someone that gives a cross the board critique of a Mac covering all aspects of using that Mac model. Sure they will run some test software, but they are not using it to promote some thoughts for clicks, just give a good review.

Because the Macbook Air is silent! and this is the most important thing for many people

Running my business doesn’t require a Pro… anymore. Back in 2017 the Pro was a huge upgrade over the Air, specifically using Photoshop. Now, the Air is suddenly a super capable machine which very easily beats the competition on multiple fronts. Actually I can’t imagine having to use a Windows machine, it would be total dread. My phone syncs, iCloud is shared across devices, encrypted sensitive info available on phone and MacBooks, just super super easy to run my business.

Had a chance to check one out today in Apple store and now cant wait to get this to replace my MBPro '17 which got me through college (undergrad and grad). This Air really does feel like the upgrade to me, fast, very nice screen, it is so light, feels so comfortable when closed in hands to carry, however the finger prints on midnight are very noticeable which is not a big deal to me but just wanted to point that out.

I will be going with 16/1TB. Haven't decided on the color yet. I did want the new Pro initially but glad that I waited.

With iCloud 1TB the larger cap isn’t needed. I wish they had a 256 with the 10 GPU cores, although I guess it’s a bundled deal. I have no big files, just need all the files and notes available on both devices all the time, so iCloud is perfect.

The narrative on the new Air has been very skewed towards creative professionals, the nonsense about the single 256 chip, etc. However for a normal business owner the new Air is a godsend , and I’ve been waiting to upgrade my 2017 Pro for the redesigned M2 Air. Sooo glad I waited and didn’t go for the M1. This is 💯 the perfect upgrade 🙏

After watching the new MacBook Air m2 in store, I still glad I bought the 14 MacBook Pro with $200 discount in 4th of July! 16gb & 512gb M2 Air=$1699! 16gb $512 gb M1. Pro =$1799($200off)! $100 for supper good display (same as $3500 Pro XDR display), better speakers, super fast M1 Pro, faster ssd, better keyboard and so on! You tell me if the $100 difference is worth the hype?
I'd say it depends on what you're looking for. The Air will be much more portable. If you mainly perform light duty tasks and you travel a lot then it's the clear winner. However, if you regularly perform heavy duty tasks and the portability is not as critical then, yes, the 14" MBP is the clear winner. Sounds to me like you got a great deal on a great laptop! Enjoy!
