Apple today released Apple Sports, a brand new app that's designed to be a dedicated hub for sports fans to find real-time statistics, scores, lineup details, live betting odds, and more. This is Apple's first new app in some time, so we thought we'd give it a quick evaluation.

The Apple Sports app has a straightforward design that puts each person's favorite leagues and teams front and center. It's updated for all the leagues that are in season right now, including MLS, NBA, NCAA basketball, NHL, Premier League, and more.

As of right now, NFL and college football aren't available, but Apple is planning to add support for those and MLB, WNBA, and NWSL when those seasons begin.

You can see all pertinent stats for your favorite teams, along with play-by-plays and schedules so you don't miss anything. You can only get this app on the iPhone, and right now, Live Activities don't seem to be working, though support might be coming in the future.

Apple Sports is available in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada. It can be downloaded from the App Store. [Direct Link]

They're going to try to compete with ESPN and didn't come out with all the features and really enable it to be a killer app. Way to put your best foot forward!

Looks like you can't even sort standings by division, conference, league, wild card, etc.

No live activities, no widgets, no Apple Watch support…

Seems like this was made by a talented 3rd grader for a contest at Apple. I don't get it.
I think that also applies to that new "Journal" app. No quick actions, etc.

Why does every company nowadays release software in an unfinished state? Even Apple can't escape this trend.

While I'm sure it will be expanded over time, still. The initial release is barebones.

SO they invested resources of some kind into this app and yet they don't have a calculator on the iPad.

Boggles the mind!

"What is a calculator?"

Because softward will never be ‘finished’ new features are released in stages as part of an ongoing product roadmap

The iPad calculator app outrage every time has to be a meme at this point. There's no way so many people really want to use a calculator on their iPad that much
Maybe you don’t, but I find use for it fairly regularly. I’m more likely to be reading up on something on my iPad than on the iPhone. As a result, I need to quickly crunch a few numbers and end up reaching for my phone, which is inconvenient if it’s not nearby.

So you'd find it quicker to switch off the app you're reading and open the calculator app?

@mistasopz got a reply or just a passive aggressive downvote?

And they should have figured out by now that Apple will not create a calculator app for the iPad.

Yes - the minimal viable product - i work for a well known software company who did this until recently. We got a backlash from our customers, and so the powers that be have decided not to continue down the MVP route any more!
