Even without that, typing an Apple ID password into this thing is a complete pain. I can't be bothered buying apps that way. The easier way is to buy it on iphone, then download it on the aTV. So you need to concentrate on your app being found on iphone or some other way rather than through the aTV.

the same complete plain is was on the Apple TV 3 ?

One thing i would like to see across all hardware is u only type your credentials in once, than when needed for other stuff elsewhere, u can conveniently use the same Apple ID.. without needing to re-enter it a dozen times.

Apple only does that for Home sharing only..

But it would be good on tvOS throughout including third party apps that require the same id..

And on iOS, desktop, and icloud. But i know Apple's on the side of security.

Telling you all, Apple has lost its touch. Products no longer 'Wow' you anymore. They are pushed out lacking features and simplicity. The Macbook lineup is a total mess; they can't develop one piece of software which is superior to a competitor; Apple Watch and now Apple TV are simply hardcore Apple fanatic accessories, not marque product lines. Apple stock sees $95 by this time next year.

Why doesn't Apple's Remote app see the new ATV? No idea why Apple hasn't updated that? That's day 1 stuff. No excuse. Would have been nice to use the keyboard on my iphone to set up all the damn apps I needed to sign. I'm aware I can get a keyboard for it but when I already have an iphone and iPad why would I?
I tried playing a few games but decided the "awesome" remote isn't that great for gaming. I bought the gaming controller Apple shows on their site from Amazon for $35.
I understand the weak app selection. It will be fine. I waited for cool things to do on the Chromecast too and look how that turned out. Wait. The Chromcast is still lame!

The interface looks so smooth and snappy! Also love the multitasking, so it just takes 0.5 seconds to start apps.

But I still don't see a use case for me, as I only use my ATV3 for Netflix.

I was first to buy the new Apple TV here in Barcelona, 8 hours before stores were open in California. I was back home and had the the Apple TV running when it was the middle of the night in the US.

I was surprised by the number of apps that were already available. I could even watch live network TV from the US here in Spain. There was a classical music app which showed which instruments were playing along with the music score. I thought this was very good for someone wanting to learn more about music.

Actually keyboards aren't supported yet.

Which app were you using for live US TV?

has anyone tried the speed test app? my ATv is connected directly to my router and the test is saying 40Mbs but my computer is getting over 200. I'm wondering if there is something wrong with the app???

We are highlighting the QVC app, REALLY? Almost as good as good as sending your heartbeat :)

Next they will hire Ron Popeil as pitch man.....

And I like my Apple watch.

i think Apple is doing the same thing with ATv that they did with the first mouse. They didn't include up down arrows on the keyboard because the wanted users to get used to the mouse. Later they added the keys after the mouse became popular. They want us to get used to using voice search. But i think they needed to add voice recognition to the dialogue boxes instead of relying solely on that horrible onscreen keyboard.

How about good old fashioned on, off, turn the channels.
Do you want a GIANT channel knob attached to the ATv??? I'm loving this thing - the UI is great - the picture quality on my 4K TV is fantastic! Time Warner Cable - good riddance. This is the future of TV!!!

Agree Apple is definitely in the Cook-era, pushing out trivial, unimaginative projects -- but I have come to enjoy my Apple Watch. However as long as Apple has a juggernaut in the iPhone I don't see the stock going to $95. What Jobs saw in him I don't know unless he was a real ass kisser. Cooks moves as CEO seem very typical of someone who got his start as an IBM and Compaq logistics guy. His whole career has been about moving product, not imagining insanely great ones.

From what I've seen of ATV4 it's something they decided to dump out last minute. So many loose ends like lack of real app discovery, and a revamped GUI that is still a lot of work unless you want to use Siri.

Here's the thing. I, as well as many other developers, busted my ass to get my app ready in time for launch. Worked late nights, missed some family time, etc. to get the app done for launch. It's in the store, but guess what, no one knows its there, because there is no way to see it unless you know it exists. I don't have money to launch a marketing campaign for it, I have to rely on the tools that Apple provides to get it off the ground. Taking away categories is doing nothing more than ****ing over the vast majority of the developers that are providing software for their hardware. Unless you are in that ~5% to be featured, you have literally no exposure. You are relying on people seeing your app online somewhere, remembering it, dealing with the clunky "keyboard" to search it out by name, and then download it. You can't link directly to it for purchase, you can't even see it in the iTunes Store on desktop.

The device may have been out for 12 hours, but they sent out dev kits ~6 weeks ago, there are somewhere around 500 apps right now. It may not be enough to fill every possible category, but it certainly is enough that there needs to be a way to see them all without knowing the name of them.

Right now, no, there isn't a need for top lists, especially considering how in flux they'd be, but categories are a must.

You were never promised exposure, nor were you promised success. You chose to spend that time in the hopes of cashing in. Don't play the victim because you may have to wait another week before they establish categories. They weren't there before on AppleTV, so they didn't take anything away from you but what you think you were entitled. Sorry to be harsh, but you are asking for a huge company to cater to you as if THIS specific thing is all they are working on. Notice they didn't update their remote app yet? Remember that iPad pro is shipping in a couple of weeks? Chill out.

im pretty sure, neither steve jobs or tim cook are the only ones who comes up with the creative ideas.. They have the best bunch of people, who are still working there from the steve jobs era, to do the innovations.. Don't worry

I also bet this was on the drawing board when jobs was around, since he said he cracked it.

Except that all the promotional images show, and have shown "Categories" in the app store. While technically they were never there, they sure did a good job making it seem like they would be.

Not a dev myself, but in fairness we have been told that tvOS is about 95% iOS... so the whole App Store concept should be fully fleshed out with virtually no additional work. Given that, categories had to be either removed or are simply not displayed yet. Either way it seems like Apple went out of there way to make this more difficult than necessary.

I agree with the other posters stating that categories should be fully enabled even if there are only a few - or even zero - apps yet.

1) No, go back and read Isaacson's quote a bit closer. He said Jobs said he thought he finally "cracked" TV but didn't say what that way. Amazon had voice recognition in its Fire TV before Apple so if this is what Jobs was referring to Amazon beat it to the punch. But it's not that great of an innovation. I certainly wouldn't say it's "cracked" anything.

2) Steve Jobs passed away 4 years ago. In that time almost everything out of Apple has been incomplete -- Maps, Siri, CarPlay, ATV4, Watch, or just blah - Mac specs (video cards pretty much gutted these days), OS X more complicated and yes more dumbed down than ever. Tablet sales are moribund and the iPad updates almost non-existent. Music seems to not be gaining traction even after the big Beats, Dre, and Iovine buy out. And now it is copying Google on it's self driving car as if Apple needed another hobby.

I agree Tim Cook deserved time to get his sea legs as CEO but he really hasn't accomplished much on his watch as it were. All of Apple's earnings come from legacy products. He's shown us nothing new and exciting that could be Apple's next bread and butter product.

So yes, I do "worry" that Apple has had its best moments as far as being a tech leader of the fresh. Tim Cook is not Steve Jobs. He is interested solely in moving product. He's almost the exact opposite of Woz who loved to innovate for the hell of it. Steve loved to innovate and sell the hell out of it. Tim Cook reminds me of John Scully, doesn't care what the hell he's selling as long as it sells.

I think you have a bit too much blind faith. The crew at Apple worked so brilliantly because Jobs knew how to push them in the right direction. Tim Cook only knows how to push product out of warehouses.

So where can I peruse this tvOS store WITHOUT a new AppleTV? I'd like to know what I can get on it BEFORE I buy it! They didn't even plan THAT far ahead. They didn't update the Remote app before releasing it, making it a royal PITA to set up and buy things. It's a JOKE. I'd be firing all kinds of people (Tim Cook included) for letting this thing out the door when it's not ready.

You know what's REALLY fantastic on a 4K TV? A 4K signal! Try Roku or Amazon. They will actually make use of your TV's extra resolution. Watching 1080p on a 4K tv is like watching a DVD on an a 1080p HDTV. Why would you want to if you don't have to?
