You do realize that "Apple" is a company -- made up of people -- companies change over time.
Nope, I had no idea. I thought it was run off of the DNA of Steve Jobs in AI form. /s

Apple, and the people that its made up of, made products back then that were not perfect either, but the vitriol on this site was not the same tone or quantity as it is today.

I guess we've just grown to expect greatness from Apple and are let down?

It doesn't make this site a "cesspool" nor do I find the discourse to be uncivil or not constructive.

I'm sorry you do - maybe step away and return down the line?
Perhaps a break would help?

I read the comments here and other places on MR and wonder why most of you are here. You obviously either hate Apple currently or have always hated them. Back in 2002 this was a site filled with people that loved Apple and when Apple made a mistake or had a problem product, the discourse was civil and constructive. Now it is a cesspool. It is such a shame.
Like you, I've been here a long time. And yes, the discourse was more civil. And it does seem lots of people are on here that just don't like Apple. But I suppose that's what happens when the company becomes the most valuable in the world. That wasn't the case in 2002.

(FWIW, due to a mistyped password, I had to reset it. But that account was connected to an old email that I no longer had access to. . . oops. New account created.)

So (8.3*4)/499 = 0.0067. Got it.
You forgot the units: inch * GB / US$.

When you divide Value1 (for tablet1) by Value2 (for tablet2), those units will be cancelled, so you'll get a dimensionless number greater or smaller than 1, respectively meaning that tablet1 has greater or smaller value than tablet2.

Cool beans man. Still doesn’t make any sense when weighing up a tablet buying choice. But go you if it works!

Does it make sense to compare:

3000 kg * meter * meter / second / second
to
1000 kg * meter * meter / second / second?

No?

I just compared 3000 "joules" of energy to 1000 "joules" of energy.
The first one is 3 times the second.

You don't like "kg * meter * meter / second / second"? Just call it "joule"!
You don't like "inch * GB / US$"? Just give it a name, let's say... "cupcakes"!

0.0067 cupcakes. Got it!

I stopped by the store. Tried it out NO “jelly”. NONE. Scrolled fast in portrait. Scrolled slow. With pencil and without. Looked great felt great. I’d earlier cancelled an order based on all the whinging here. Lesson learned. Trust but verify. Maybe Apple is using different lots. Will re-order.
Again, no “jelly.” Nor peanut butter. Nor donuts. Wonder if there is “jelly trolling”. Cheerio!

You should tell Apple ... their public comments don’t agree with you...about their own product

I have one and I think it is fantastic. It’s a small tablet with a LOT of POWER. I am not returning mine, jelly or no jelly.
I still have mine too. It's probably not fair that I only whinged about things that are downsides for me. Upsides for me are that I love the form factor, usb-c, great cpu/gpu, and apple pencil 2 support. If UPS hadn't lost the smart folio, that would be a purple triumph too, I'm sure (on the upside, Apple is replacing it).

It's like enjoying a delicious ice cream cone, but someone keeps punching you in the boob. You want them to not punch you, and it may be worth throwing the ice cream at them. But you also want to finish the ice cream. Do what you will with that tortured analogy. 😆

This review makes me wonder if the review iPad mini is a lemon or if my 12.9 iPad Pro is the crummy one. Because the display on my new iPad mini seems better than that on my 2018 iPad Pro. I set up a full page NY times on each of them. The crispness of the print and clarity of the photos on my iPad mini made it as easy to read as on my iPad Pro (not as crisp on the pro but larger). I handed my iPad mini to my brother to check out and his first comment was on the clarity and beauty of the display (SF Bay sunset photo I have on my lock page).

Other surprising likes .. (1) I was reluctant to get the cover but did anyway. Glad I did .. It's light, unobtrusive, and it protects well. (2) I have a Zagg keyboard for an iPad mini I bought years ago. It attaches with ease and it works very well (surprising easy to type with). (3) With the mini I'm able to use an Apple Magic Mouse. It works no differently than on my iMac (cursor looks a little different). It's like having a little hand held Magic Trackpad. (4) I love being able to attach/charge the pencil. It's great for quick notes, scrolling around my spreadsheet, and drawing living room furniture layouts on gridded page.

I'm trading in my 2018 iPad Pro for this (the cost to me is a little less than the sales tax - basically a wash). the one thing I truly appreciate, it's really nice just throwing my iPad in my pocket rather than hassle with that big iPad Pro when I go out.

My only complaint: I don't trust the Apple Pencil to stay attached when I pocket the iPad mini. It would be great if Apple somehow had a way to firmly attach the pencil to the case.

The starlight looks rather gold, which is actually nice. It does feel weird not to have a cool white / silver option in the lineup.
It's more bronze than gold, i.e. it's on the brownish side rather than pure yellowish.

Agreed about the lack of white/silver option.

Maybe that's reflective of apple not living up to their own standards of excellence for extremely expensive products made by the wealthiest company in history. I own a lot of apple products and many are fabulous but since 2002 they very clearly traded the rainbow apple for fine 99.9% silver.
