Hands-On With the New 'TV' App in the tvOS 10.1 Beta

Is NextEpisode on the Apple TV?

I use WatchAid which is on tvOS and iOS and is great. I search for each show I watch and tell it to follow it and when a New unwatched Episode is available it shows up under Newly Available. I can also look under Upcoming and see what is coming today, tomorrow and beyond. Even shows like House of Cards which is Upcoming in 99 days. It supports everything that I watch in Netflix, Hulu, CBS All Access, CW, etc. And, I can look at prior seasons.

I was really hoping the Apple TV App would work as good or better. But I can't even find out how to add a TV Series. Looks like you have to start watching a show and then it shows under Watching Now. I don't see this very helpful. Again, I want to tell it which shows I watch and let it manage them.

will find out and let u know shortly. Does watchaid have shows limit? NextEpisode does,
Does it send notifications?
Does it allow u remove from the list when watched?

wow thanks for the recommended apps. NextEpisode was exactly what i needed and hoped the TV app would be and now i dont care. I cut the cord on the TV but still interested when these shows are ready on the their respective network apps for me to see. NextEpisode allows me to load all my fav shows and also allows me to offset 1 day so the schedule actually shows me when the networks apps actually load it in their apps. Most load it the next morning so this is perfect. Also allows me to tell it which one i watched already to make the list clean.
You get a lot with a free account, and a lot more with a subscription like tracking which shows you've acquired along with watched & unwatched. You also gain tracking of theatrical released movies.

I've checked it out on my iPad, and it's got a few bugs, but overall not bad. It's nice being able to use it and search faster to see if a show is on netflix or hulu, without having to load up each of the apps. It's just a shame you can't use your Netflix and/or Hulu account, and have it open up in the TV app itself seamlessly, instead of the TV app switching to that specific app (I doubt that feature will ever be available though)

Sounds like it's a step in the right direction. Thanks for the review.

So if "the future of TV is apps", why create an app designed to prevent you from having to go to other apps?

One word: "convenience."

Do you really want hundreds of apps cluttering your  TV home screen? (Hint: no.)
You would end up using Siri anyway, which makes apps work like features within tvOS.

A little birdie I know has purchased 103 movies through iTunes already, so just the "movies" section of my, er, their TV app takes a while to scroll through. Sometimes Siri is still the best option.

But for TV shows, I do see the short-term branding benefits of having separate apps. The TV networks and content providers are very deeply entrenched, and they have spent millions creating their own branding. They aren't willing to give that up easily. Even though I'm sure many TV viewers have zero brand loyalty and couldn't care less whether "House of Cards" is on HBO or Starz or USA or CBS or Netflix.

Apple says "the future of TV is apps" to appease the establishment TV players.
It gives them silos in which to segregate their content from others.
Only temporarily though. I really don't think the average streaming TV viewer cares about "networks" any more.
To them, and to me, silos are just another bit of clutter between me and the content I want to see.

Not sure what shows limit is or if needed.
No notifications that I am aware of but for me not needed since every night I open the App to see "Newly Available" which has all the new episodes of shows I watch. Does mot include Movies
Yes, after you watch a show it prompts you to say watched and it is removed from Newly Available. Or you can just click on an episode and it will remove from the watched or click on it to add to the unwatched like a toggle.

When you first add a series it flags 1 as not watched. I normally just click on it so that I only start seeing New Episodes. However, if not I click on the ones I have not seen. I think a ways to have it turn a group of them into watched or unwatched. I can use it both on iPad or ATV but normally only on the ATV.

I recommend you give it a try. So easy to use on the ATV and there is no cost to try it. Their pricing is voluntary donation which seems kind of crazy. I gave the max donation of $10 since it so good. But you can give nothing to $2 or $4 or $10 (something like that). Currently, the ATV Version gets your settings form the iOS Version which is also where you have to donate.

Lastly, it is tied to the iCloud Account that is logged on. Not the iTunes Store Account. My wife and I have separate iCloud and the same iTunes. So our Universal Watch List is unique to our iCloud Accounts. I most watch in my "man cave tv room" and she normally watches in the MBR because of our schedules so this is really perfect for us. I would like for Apple to offer a quick change option for multiple iCloud Accounts like they do for iTunes but not a big deal for me now.

Is NextEpisode on the Apple TV?
No, NextEpisode has a website as well as iOS and Android apps. With an annual or lifetime subscription it does everything else you mentioned with regards to 'today, tomorrow, and beyond' for OTA, cable, and streaming services. It also recommends new shows based on creators of shows in you watchlist or history, or both.

There is a limit with the mobile app for free accounts, but not for subscribers. There is no limit for either paid or free accounts using the Next-Episode.net website. If you sign up at the site, you'll get a 14-day trial to try out the 'Pro' features. Once you create a login, you can use it to sync with your iOS or Android device. I don't recall the cost, I subscribed last year when they had a 'Black-Friday' special, but it's not expensive.

WatchAid doesn't have a Today Screen Plugin. NextEpisode has one, and I use it just as often as the app.

Vudu? Amazon? Charter Spectrum apps? Why should I not use my 4k HDR Roku? I can cast to it from my iOS devices just like my now covered in dust ATV too.

Apple software guys. WAKE THE 'F' UP.

I like the idea of the TV apps landing page serving as a new Home screen (if the users chooses).

This might take some getting used to though. If I want to get back to the real Home screen I need to train myself to press and hold the Menu button, instead of the "Home" button. NBD. That's how it was on the old ATV. Shouldn't take more than a few days to change that behavior.

The part I find interesting is that "the button formerly knows as Home" has the same graphic as the TV App icon. Which doesn't really make sense if it's a universal Home button. Why not use the the word "Home" just like "Menu" next to it? Or use the square with rounded corners graphic that used to be on the iphone home button?

I think it's safe to say that Apple intended to ship the ATV4 with the TV App but delayed it for whatever reasons. So was the TV Button on the Siri Remote was always intended to do what it does now - take you to the TV App landing page and NOT serve as a universal Home button? I believe the answer is yes. It certainly makes more sense than having 2 buttons serving the same function right next to each other.

The TV button was probably meant for their version of a streaming tv package that fell through. Apple most likely wanted this interface to be a seamless mixture of love and on demand content. Tracking all your shows on various apps and their live tv service.

Yeah, clearly Apple had much bigger plans for the TV App and had to dial things back significantly for whatever reason (likely service provider disputes). I am confident that within the next year the TV App will gain many more features, such as a guide and/or some form of live TV streaming, to get it where it was originally intended to be.

I noticed the TV Icon on the remote has been relinked to open this specific app.

As of this morning, fourth-generation Apple TV owners running the tvOS 10.1 beta were given access to the new "TV" app, which is designed to be a one-stop destination for finding and watching television and movies across the Apple TV and iOS devices.

The TV app, which works hand-in-hand with features like Live Tune-In and Single Sign On, aims to make it easier for users to locate content that's spread across dozens of television and movie apps. In the video below, you can see that the TV app is now fully functional, with a dedicated store, recommended content, and an Up Next syncing feature.

The TV app is organized into several sections. Watch Now, the main menu, feature a collection of shows and movies available from iTunes and other apps. Up Next, a subsection of Watch Now, keeps track of the TV shows and movies you've watched, remembering which episode of a TV show you're on or where a movie was paused, even across multiple devices.

A library houses all of the content you've purchased from iTunes, while a store section lists recommendations on what you should buy based on other things you've watched. The store not only features content from iTunes, but also several third-party apps like Hulu, HBO Now, and Starz.

The TV app is also available on iOS devices running the iOS 10.2 beta, and it has an interface that's identical to the TV app interface on the Apple TV.

tvOS 10.1 is limited to developers, but is expected to see a public release this December. Apple has promised that tvOS 10.1 features, including Single Sign On and the TV app, will be available before the end of the year.

Yep, I was kind of wondering how this latest example of Apple's "innovation" will be better than WatchAid and the other apps like it.

I just hope that now Apple doesn't ban WatchAid and the likes....

So this will keep track of which person is watching which show based on which user account is logged in, right? ;)

Or has Apple still not remembered that the Apple TV isn't a "personal" device like iPhone and iPads?

I should be able to have my phone let me continue watching the show that I was watching, not the show my wife or daughter was watching.

Same thing with the remote app. When I open a search screen and start using the remote to type on screen, my phone buzzes and reminds me to use the remote app on my iPhone, but my phone also buzzes when my wife does it even though I'm not even in the same room. She should be able to switch to her account, which can be linked to her iPad and her iPhone.

Dude u only have 1 tv or what? I have several rooms and one has a uhd tv with an AppleTV 4 and a PS4 too. Buy more tvs and appletv amigo. Dont be cheap plz. I mean money is 2 be used.

I tried it on the iPad. I don't use any streaming services, so for me it only needs to do three things:
- Show me my purchased videos
- Show me my downloaded videos
- Show me my shared library

It doesn't do the 3rd. Since it replaces the old Videos app, I now have no way of viewing videos from my shared library.

I firmly believe that this was the plan all along. The TV app was meant to be the true home of the 4th generation for their planned streaming service. When that all fell through, they released it without it and the whole "future of tv is apps" line was used as a plan b, while the TV app was taken back to be retooled.

I also believe it was HUGE mistake to release it before this was ready. Had it been the home from the beginning and not a bolt on "app" Apple could have enforced compatibility from the start.

Very much looking forward to this app. We don't have many subscription services other than Netflix, but we watch a lot of shows for free on apps like ABC (Designated Survivor and Agents of Shield) and NBC (Timeless). The only problem right now is we have to open each app individually and look to see if our shows are available. This new app will be a cord-cutter's dream.

wow thanks for the recommended apps. NextEpisode was exactly what i needed
I found thus app, it's EXACTLY what I needed... it sounds similar... http://maximilianlitteral.com/TelevisionTime/

I agree... Apple is more interested in designing new emoticons than focusing on what they have in front of them..I use TelevisionTime and it manages it completely...simply "check" the box when you watch that show and everything else is automatic. Check it out... best I could find. http://maximilianlitteral.com/TelevisionTime/
[doublepost=1479356785][/doublepost]Apple TV app is on the right track, but they need to start "thinking Differently" and integrate a cool watchlist guide into the app so we know what is on next, what we already watched, (or missed) and whats comping up....think TV guide for on demand shows that ONLY displays the shows we select. If they follow the TelevisionTime app, its 90% there. But, for some reason it will take them years to get something useful.. :(

I think it was mentioned already. But the one thing that I don't like is it doesn't seem to know what episode you are already on. If you are season 2 of new girl on Hulu. And you bring up the same show in the tv app, it plays from the very first episode of the first season. Doesn't seem to realize you have already marked those episodes as watched in Hulu etc.

Also it doesn't seem to transfer your favorites movie/show que over. As a matter a fact, I don't seem to see a que at all to favorite and view at a later date. But it does seem to show your recently watched at the top of the app.
