Uber is a ride-hailing app, not ride-sharing. Ride-sharing apps allow cars to be rented out ad-hoc, similar to how bikeshare works.

Ride-sharing refers to app-based services that let people book a shared shuttle according to AP, which means Uber and Lyft are also ride-sharing apps given their ability to carpool with multiple people. What you are referring to is called car sharing or short term car rentals.

Thanks for the clarification. In this case ride-hailing is still more reflective of their business model. Ride-sharing should be reserved for services that exclusively offer that model. The AP tweet makes a point of referring to them as ride-hail to make this distinction clear.
