Were you able to get apps another way before the app store? Or was the phone just for whatever stock apps came with it?

Just stock. iPhone 3G was the first iPhone available outside the US as I recall, therefore the first one I got. Everyone I knew got one.

There was a Palm AppStore, a limited Sprint PCS AppStore, there was a few websites you can’t download PALM prc files from and the one which probably stood out the most:
“In 2003 Handango introduced the first on-device app store for finding, installing and buying software for smartphones. App download and purchasing are completed directly on the device so sync with a computer is not necessary. Description, rating and screenshot are available for any app.”

i taught myself how to code in under a month from scratch, never did anything like it before. i just wanted to make a few apps that would be useful for me, but put them on the store too. that first day i sold 3 and couldn’t beleive it! i then made a few more utility apps, at one point i had over 30 on the store.

i went on to sell over 900,000, didn’t quite make the million but had a great ride for 3-4 years before the store became too crowded and discovery became an issue for people like me with no marketing budget or experience.

i had no experience with coding at all and managed to make decent money but most of all i am very proud of my achievements in actually just creating something that so many people found useful and that to me is what made the app store great, it gave small devs a great opportunity with minimal outlay, if you had a good idea and reasonable skills you had a chance. i also helped a couple of friends who also did this from scratch and they did well too.

i don’t think we will ever see such an opportunity again

I miss the original Koi Pond so much. That was my first app I got for my iPhone. Wish they would bring it back.
Oh my. Me too! I haven't thought about that for a long time. It was definitely one of my first 5 apps—can't remember the others although their was some simple music player that you could share world-wide . . . .

iPhone 3G... My first love. My first hit. Beginning of my addiction.

I had a Treo and PPC 6500(?) before the iPhone. Never looked back.

Altho, the S9 has caught my eye. But as my wife says, you can look, but don't touch.

The key to success INSIDE the iOS App Store is having something going on OUTSIDE the iOS App Store !

Apps require companion backend server processing, OR OUTSIDE service offering to be successful !

I still can't believe it's been 10 years. I remember that summer-- I still had my first generation iPod Touch, and I was out of college, without work, and broke as heck. I was miffed I had to pay to unlock the app store, but it ultimately led me to where I am today.

I loved playing with apps and games that came out over the years. I loved how they worked, how they looked, all of it. I worked in retail for 4 years and eventually got out of the retail job. That work ended, I was looking for a job again, and eventually, I was contacted by someone looking for a Designer on apps. I didn't have UI experience, but they took a chance on me, and I was able to use my design sense, and other art skills to make all sorts of stuff for the apps we made. I did icons, store banners, in-app art and design-- all sorts of different things over the years. My job has changed over the years as things tend to do, but I'm still here, and celebrating my 6th year with the Mouse soon. If it hadn't been for apps, I don't know if I would be where I am now. Happy Birfdee, App Store!

I still have an issue with this 10yr anniversary accuracy.

2007 iPhone OG was announced.
Shipped in early 2008!
A year later the iPhone 3G shipped and App Store debuted.
That makes 2019 the 10yr anniversary.... am I getting times mixed up, or ??

Sometimes, on a rainy day, I snuggle up in the couch by the fireplace with a cup of Joe's Best Coffee, and power up my old iPhone 3GS, just to play Apple Inc. "Texas Hold' Em" and reminisce over days gone by.

They announced the first iPhone in 2007, shipped it later that year during the summer, then the 3G and App Store debuted in 2008.

How many of those early apps are still available today? My oldest apps purchased from my iPhone 4 that still works on my iPhone 7 iOS 10 is Fat-a-Pult from Pinger and Video D/L from NetPowerApps.
Restoring purchases no longer works for a lot of apps now.

It was great in the beginning. Now it's in a tail spin due to Apple's arrogance.

Thanks for the clarification. Makes sense now since AT&T has exclusitivity and in Canada we didn’t get an iPhone until the 3G which was in 2008. I thought I had a 3G but it was the 3GS in 2009.
