good time to reflect
I think it's a good day to reflect on why we all love these machines so much. Not many machines command our interest to the degree that Macintosh computers do.
Apple is a company, and as such, is tasked with making money for their shareholders. Nobody here can deny that. And these days, Apple is doing pretty darn well at doing that, especially for the economy being so sluggish.
But there IS more to Apple than that, and anyone who says otherwise is either ignorant or overly cynical.
I believe that Apple is a company that _actually_ cares about empowering its customers. It seems as if this has always been the guiding principle, at least during Apple's Steve Jobs years. This is a company that has tremendous pride in the work that they do. And this all stems from their genuine desire to give average people cutting edge tools that extend our ability to communicate, share ideas, emotions, information...
There are a lot of pretty twisted megacorps out there, who think of their customers as numbers, units, mindless automatons who simply consume. These companies would dump straight poison into the water supply if it would save them some money (sometimes this literally occurs).
I sincerely believe that Apple is nothing like this, for the most part. Yes, they sometimes make mistakes -- but the company, and its leadership, are fundamentally on the side of their customers. And in this day and age, that is special. This is what Wall Street will never understand about Apple -- because Wall Street is incapable of thinking in these terms.
