Only thing good about Valentine's is the candy, especially conversation hearts, mmm...

That and the necklace I got a couple years ago on this date that I haven't taken off since except to repair it.

you mean, chalk that was dyed in various colors and printed with useless dribble?

I haven't been with a gf on Valentines in... seven years, I think. I thought this time was going to be the end of that, but we broke up last sunday. Oh well, I've still got a million things to do, so like other people have said, it's just Wednesday :)
Think of the money you saved! Some people get pressured into spending a fortune on this holiday.

This is my 17th consecutive Valentine's Day without a girlfriend (or even a boyfriend!!!! ). I'm not complaining, since I am only 17. I did have a girlfriend at one point, but we didn't even last 3 months. So, yeah, I didn't get a single Valentine, nor did I give any, which makes sense. Oh wait, my mom gave me one. She actually bothered to send it from our house, back to our house. What a waste of 35¢.

Well, at least I get to spend the day with my MacBook Pro. Maybe we'll make out later.

never had a boyfriend...always been single. all my friends however are going on dates.

this holiday is fake for the most part...why wait until valentine's day to show the love?

I don't think it's fair to call V-day fake, or to claim that people only show their feelings this one day out of the year.

I'd hope that if people truly care for their special somebodies (whether romantically or otherwise) they would show throughout the year.

Like any other holiday, it's what you make of it.

One year, my mom took heart-shaped cookie cutters and left little heart poundcake cut outs for me. That was sweet, inexpensive, and let me know that she cares.

My ex would leave little post-its and notes around in unexpected places, but places I would eventually find them. That, is sweet and fun and definitely inexpensive. Those notes? Mean more to me than any of the gorgeous gifts he ever got me.

Just practice safe sex and put an anti-virus on.

I've never been a believer of buying really expensive gifts. Heck, many times I don't buy stuff for my gf on "special dates", just Christmas and her B-Day. I much prefer to get her something any random day of the year, leave small chocolates and notes in her backpack, borrow her phone for a bit and put an "I Love You" alarm on her calendar for the next day at a time I knew we wouldn't be together, cook lunch for her... there are a bunch of small, quick, non-expensive things you can do that are much more meaningful than getting her some big gift (that she may be "expecting", which ruins the whole thing for me)

It's not a "Holiday"! It's just a day that Hallmark has taken hold of and had a marketing field day with. Who cares? The wife and I don't bother. We still have to feed the dogs(got a new one) and cats, go to work, the chiropracter etc. Life doesn't change because i didn't spend $100.00 on flowers the cats will eat and candy that will just make us both fatter. i'm just enjoying the fact that this week is half over.

Well to those who say that the holiday is just a made-up commercial waste of time, remember that for most people, so is Christmas, New Years, Easter, Mothers Day, Fathers Day, your own birthday, etc. How many people genuinely care about Christmas because of Christ's birth? Most people, even the few religious people I know, like Christmas because their entire family is together, and they get presents. :p I'm definitely an atheist, and yet I celebrate it anyway, although not for any religious reason.

What about Easter? I'm not religious, but I still like the holiday because it's fun for children, and because chocolate eggs are teh bomb! :D Hell yes, I'll participate.

Sometimes it's not about the meaning of the holiday. If it was, then I wouldn't celebrate Mothers or Fathers Day. I treat my parents really well 365 days a year, and we always get along perfectly well. :) I also buy them stuff once in a while, even if it's something small (eg: sometimes I would buy a nice apple pie from the store so that we can all eat it for dessert after dinner).

I just have fun and participate in holidays like this. I love my girlfriend every other day of the year, but it is kind of nice to give her one day each year that's just hers and nobody elses. :)

Y'know, you have a point. Having holidays peppered throughout the year is healthy, a signpost in the least for us. And there is a big dearth after Christmas. Sure, folks in the states have MLK, President's day, etc, but there aren't all that many truly international holidays, and it seems that Valentine's day is one (been to China lately?)

Oh, and I can't let this go...

You're killing me dllavaneras. I can't-make-joke-HEAD EXPLODING..!!

People yelling "Hallmark Holiday", just wanted to say... not necessarily.

Yeah it's Valentine's Day, and you show your love, and you say "well why just show your love one day? Why not all the other days?" I completely agree.

I didn't ask my girlfriend to be my valentine. When asked, I just say "Why? You're my valentine everyday" ;)

But I do like to make it fun/thoughtful. I mean, why not? I just gave my girlfriend a Iris flower (she told me a long time ago that it's her favorite type of flower). She appreciates it more than the generic red rose.

And I got her a nice keychain, because she has lost hers a long time ago and uses a paperclip as a substitute for the past month or so.

So Think Different! :D

As for the singles, I feel you. I've had, I think, 3 valentines total as a taken guy. Out of 23 years. Yeah, not the best record. But what the hell, have fun. Ask your secretary to be your valentine! :D

Kudos to the thread starter!

Honestly I've always been single every valentines day! Doesn't bother me one bit, heh.

Tsk tsk to the people, especially the fella's that look at this day as an obligation! Y'know, the ones that say "Ahh f**k I gotta get my girl something today." Shame, haha.

IMO, we need days like these to remind us about the ones we consider special. It's another chance to out-do last years valentines, haha.

One day I'm going to do this xD Muahaha, Shh if your thinking what I think you're thinking, originality died the day it was created! And besides it's one of those things you can completely copy, but it's so damn cute you just can't help but smile/laugh.

Is Valentines day celebrated in most country's, or is it mostly US-centric?

I wouldn't think it would be as universal as people are saying it is here because (nobody's mentioned this yet) it was started as a religious holiday. It's the feast day of St. Valentine, who was a martyr. Since everybody in the entire world isn't Christian, I wouldn't think everybody would celebrate it, but it's been twisted twice as much as Christmas, so you never know...

I would think that it is celebrated throughout most of the world, since I think that St. Valentine is a Catholic Saint, and there are large groups of catholics in most countries. but it probably hasn't been twisted as much in other countries.

Some countries started to celebrate it because it's popular in so many other countries. :)

In Japan, the girls give GUYS presents on Valentines Day, usually chocolate!!! The guys need to give girls presents on March 14th, or White Day. Weird eh?

I still don't get what's wrong with Wednesdays, even if they're big, big humps in the middle of the week ;)

Everybody gets humped once a week.

This is the one day of the year I enjoy being single. It's also: my grandmother's (paternal), great-aunt's (her older sister by a year), uncle's, and aunt's (also separated by a year) birthday today. Plus, tomorrow is my mother's. In the space of 5 days, there are 6 b-days in my family. What a busy week.
