From my experience, it's a bit different here in the States... for Subarus at least. Usually, it's the outdoorsy type or the type who live in rugged or snowy areas, that have them. I have yet to see one kitted out (unless it was a WRX). The Legacy, Outback, and Forrester just seem to be more of your regular vehicle with a bit more outdoorsly look. I had a Legacy sedan. It was nothing special to look at (except to its owner), but it handled very well, in general.

In the UK they're usually seen either passing you (no matter what speed you're doing) at 67mph (the Doppler effect adding much needed variation to whatever repetitive ***** their ear drums happen to be bleeding to that particular day) or doing donuts at 2am in a Tesco's car park surrounded by hundreds of other 'trendy' like-minded simpletons. Awesome.

I do. Of course it's a crass generalisation, but most people who drive Subarus and BMWs (usually kitted out like rally cars and with 'kickin' stereos') are knob-heads. At least in the UK - it might be different in the US.

i had a subaru legacy because i had moved from los angeles to a place that snows... i had no idea what to do in the snow. i wanted all-wheel drive. the subaru was a nice choice for what i needed. i no longer have that subaru though. (pathfinder is my 4x4 now)
there is no real rationalization or explanation i can give you for owning a BMW but i like to think of myself as not being a knob-head. ;) i know an awful lot of people (including my mother) that own BMWs and they certainly don't fit that criteria. it's a shame they got that reputation where you are, subarus and BMWs are actually pretty good cars i think.

For clarity the Subarus I was commenting on were just the Impreza, in rally/disco style. I happen to really like the Legacy and to a lesser extent the Forester, my family have had a few Legacys. There's not a lot wrong with BMW's but they now are considered to soulless here, the best description I've heard is (of the new 3-series) that it's a car you order by the foot.

I'm sure they are very very good cars - it's all the people who drive them over here in the UK seem to know about. They're certainly fast. Also, when I say BMWs, it's not so much your £25 - £40k BMW (although these are still driven quite frequently by high-flying-I-Haven't-got-time-to-talk-to-you-get-outta-my-way types) but rather the cheap(ish) second hand (but still very powerful - 2+ litre) ones. Usually with added spoiler. And wings. And a jet engine ;)
