Matthew how did you format the drives? I pulled a Quantum Fireball LCT from my old TiVo but on Windows and Mac computers it comes up as 9 MB but the drive is 30 GB

I just used Disk Utility. Being a TiVo drive not even Linux can mount the drive. Make sure you have the jumper on master or slave. Only reason I can come up with for it only showing 9MB is either the jumper of the hard drive controller. The MDD saw both 80GB drives fine. Also mine were Series 2 TiVos.
 
They require a subscription? Mine worked without one I think, and I believe it was either a series 2 or 3 model.

I remember now, my family got the lifetime subscription for TiVo, which they stopped offering quickly after TiVo became super popular. Thus explains why it still worked when I plugged it in a few months ago even though it was disconnected for at least 5 years.

One of my TiVo's had a lifetime subscription IIRC it still didnt work though, said the subscription was suspended (bought them at garage sales)
