Simple query, a friend seems to have wiped a hole in his iPhone 12’s coating and he’s not happy with it. He asked me if I knew anything about oleophobic coatings as available from Amazon and if they work.

Straight answer I don’t have a clue.

Do any of you?

I've heard that they last a couple of weeks tops and have to be constantly re-applied. Honestly his best bet is to just get a good screen protector with a good coating like Spigen or ESR.

iPhonedo made a video about one of these products not that long ago. The conclusion was that it managed to restore the coating to a decent ableit not like-new state. In the comments he added that it took about three months before the restored coating wore off again.

I've checked and the product he tried (Crystal Armor Fusso, what mavis recommended as well) goes for about $14 at the moment. To me that'd be worth it if I didn't use a screen protector, but ymmv.

Thanks for that I’ll take a look
