On the launch day the apple employees told me i can just come back within 30 days to get the gold when space grey was theonly option left for me to reserve. 2 weeks later i came back to exchange my phone with no problems. It wasinstant, with no questions askedlol

Not true. I traded my wife's space Grey for a silver one. Walked in told them I wanted to exchange it, no questions asked other than "which one would you like?" Walked out with a different phone. Didn't pay a penny.

does anyone know if I can still do this?

Even if your past experiences are different, do you think if you're getting the same speech at retail and corporate that perhaps this year is different? If you really, really, really want to know, get up, go out to the store and see what they say.

Bring your box and your receipt.

This year is different because of the resellers. Forcing folks to do online orders right now is a way to slow down the resellers continuing to buy all the stock.

In many cases the online orders buy out all of the stock and since it is already paid for they can't sell it to a walk in. If you are there right at the top of the morning there might be one of what you want available and they will let you swap. But you might lose that gamble a few times before you get lucky.

----------

I exchanged my grey for gold a week after launch. The trick is to buy the phone online for in store pickup and then go in and explain what you are trying to do. They will then return the iphone you just ordered for in store pickup(this is just a method to hold inventory) then they will perform a return of the old phone or an exchange and sell you the new color. They may have changed the process.

They changed the process. Too many resellers trying to play tricks like buy a new line and try to change it in store to a full price to get it unlocked.

Now all cancelled phones get frozen for a period of several hours and then go back into the ordering system. Managers are instructed not to hold them etc. So your mileage is likely to be very very short on that idea.

----------

When you ordered your iPhone, you entered into a legally binding contract for your space grey phone. You have made your selection. You are not permitted to switch.

Sure you are. That contract comes with a legally binding 'out' period during which you can cancel your obligation and either walk away or start a new contract for different hardware.

This is the method that will work every time.

Someone else already said it, but it seems that a few people got lucky and were able to do a simple exchange. They are "supposed" to do a refund/return and then a new purchase.

1.get new line
2.order phone online for in store pickup using new line
3.get phone from apple store (activated on new line)
4.go to carrier and switch lines (put new line on old phone)
5.go back to apple store and get refund for old phone
6.cancel new line

Long way around the block but it works without fail.

But ATT's agreement says that while you have three days to cancel a new line, you have to return any equipment purchase in connection with the line. So this wouldn't work.
