The Quirky Cloak creator posted a reply to all the recent negative comments due to the video:

Thanks for your comments. A few responses: 1. On Stability: Final production materials will be SIGNIFICANTLY more substantial / hard then the Rapid Prototype seen in this video. The case will be stable in portrait, landscape, and typing mode. 2. On the hinge: Sometimes, when you imagine the details of a feature while connecting, it seems perfect. However, later- you find out you can achieve the same or better functionality while using a more simple/elegant solution. We have a prototype of the “clicky” cloak, and the hinge/case was significantly bulkier, and the click would have to be limited to 2 predefined viewing angles, and made it cumbersome to close the case when you were not using the clicky feature. In our current solution the hinge clicks once over a stopper on the back side of the case, which then serves as a friction stopper to keep the case up in endless angles vs just 2 or 3. This solution also helped with on your concern #3: 3. Bulkiness: Was of top of mind throughout the design / development process. The case is the absolute thinnest it can be while achieving all of the functionality. The video does not do a good job in showing the beauty / elegance of the case. I will be posting another video this week which will show things in more detail. There is another round of prototypes coming this week. We will have another video to share at that time. Also note: Quirky does not charge cards until your product ships. You have not been charged, and will not be until you come back and confirm your order / pick your color when the cloak is ready late next month.

I do find it interesting that in the 13 pages/259 comments that he finally responded to comments. I'm still going to have to wait and see with this case, but i'm not optimistic.

I'm far from sold on this case, but I could see myself getting it if it turns out as well, or at least close to as well as promised.

I'm Optimistic About the Cloak

I have never seen a company make such an effort at transparency. This is a good sign for me. I like the design and the flexibility of landscape and portrait mode. It looks like the finished product could be quite slim and light. I am using a Yoobao now, but it really is heavy and bulky. We'll see, but I wouldn't count these folks out yet.

I'm still interested but they need to communicate better at times, but I guess time will tell. I just hope they hurry up and get it out for reviews.

i ordered one. will see how it works. couldn't find anything else out there like it

also bought an iluv sleeve to tide me over as well. would be nice if cloak fit into the sleeve. didnt really think of that till now.

What specifically are you looking for in a case that the Quirky Cloak offers? The plastic kickstand look so flimsy that it wouldn't surprise me if it breaks off within 2 weeks.

Liked the idea of being able to stand the ipad up in several ways.

Landscape, portrait...

It look's like something you would buy to compliment your Barbie doll house.
That's my impression lol

Lauch date changed...

Hey guys, just let you know that i just went to the site, and they changed the launch date from the June 24th to the 15th of July !

They just lost one customer... can't wait that long :(

Looks like cheap garbage to me , can't believe they have taken so long to put out something so cheap looking. 4 months to make that , that's funny :D

Looks NOTHING like the original concept.

Exactly.. A case that does more than one thing will never be a great case.

Anupdate guys. It's actually now entering final production with release less than two weeks away.

They have new blog updates and it is looking closer to the design proof than the earlier video. (Main differences being the new flip out keyboard stand)

The red / blue dual colour in the photos is merely the sample colours. Final colours will be the same as the design concepts.

As soon as I get my hands on one I will post full photos and review.

cloak broke

the cloak broke as I was unpacking it. cheap plastic for the stand frame.

I think in light of what i have read you guys posting about it - this post in this thread cracks. Me. Up.

I'm truly sorry to hear it didn't work out as everyone had hoped :(

Cloak review

Hi all

I received my cloak a few days ago and have been using it everyday. I've posted a quick review at kidTruant.com.

Overall, it does exactly what you see in the videos and on the Quirky website. It's pretty heavy with the iPad inside due to how thick the front cover is -- but then, you'll never fear for the safety of your iPad's glass screen.

The material is a slightly tacky silicone that feels good, and does a good job of picking up dirt and smudges. It's not as bad as Apple's case. The case is best for table use (using the portrait or typing stand, and especially using the friction of the front and back covers. For the price (which went up) and from a usability perspective, it's probably better than Apple's offering and better than most others. From a visual design or fashion perspective, there's prettier cases (but not at the same price point).

Feel free to read my review and ask questions.

FYI - Recently iLounge had to close comments on their product pages because of fake comments about some products they feature. Iv'e also noticed this on my site from companies who post great (fake) feedback on products. So I would beware of those..

wise advice (but a real review)

Thanks SchneiderMan... as with any product, it's good to read a bunch of different points of view, as you may read a review by a cynic OR a fanboy, and get a biased review. Note that I joined Macrumors Forum today to post the above comment but I have no relation to Quirky beyond being a customer.

cheers,

My cloak is due to arrive tomorrow, so I'll take some pics and give my impression on it. I've been waiting for this thing for MONTHS (wish it hadn't taken so long, but...)

After seeing the Quirky vid of them receiving the final product in Pennsylvania and really giving it a good work over (check their channel on Youtube for the video), I'm pretty enthusiastic about finally getting mine...
