I actually "upsized" in a way. I previously used my Macbook Pro as my primary computing device but have since moved to an iMac + iPad Air combination and I'm really happy with the way it's working out.

I haven't downsized but I am not upgrading or worried about having the newest stuff and will probably just keep my current laptops going as long as possible. I only use them for certain things. But, there ARE some things that are simply easier and more convenient with a laptop versus the iPad.

I recently upgraded my MBP to a rMBP. However, if I could do it over, I would have "downsized" to an iMac though "downsize" isn't really the right word. After having laptops instead of desktops for the last 7 years, thanks to my iPad, I no longer need the portability of a laptop.

Other than the usual daily stuff like email and web-browsing, my laptop served 2 main purposes. I used it for the children's church I work with. Now I really only need it for documents. Everything else, lesson preparation, worship videos and displaying images are all done with my iPad and Apple TV now. The other purpose is the occasional video edit, just a few times a year.

My upgrade was mainly because I got rid of cable and after a few months I find my rMBP plugged in most of the time because it is either downloading or streaming TV shows. So if could do it over, I would revert back to a desktop and have gotten an iMac. Although I'll probably have this thing for many years, it'll likely be my last laptop.

The iPad is a wonderful device within limits. For my needs it cannot replace a traditional computer. iPad lacks big time when it comes to sharing and file management capabilities. While many web pages display differently on ipad, many more web sites are just off limits to ipad viewing.

This is not to say than in twenty years ipad will be infinitely better off and able to perform things more efficiently, but for now it is being severely crippled by Apple engineers who listen more to the woe is me sob stories told by the cellular providers instead of listening to the needs of the people who are paying $1000 for the device.

No, I've upgraded my MacBook Pro setup. iPad is a nice complement but I need a full workstation for research and data analysis.

Not me, I love my iPad but I just bought a Macbook Air and around the house the iPad mini is basically just for some media consumption like reading ebooks, watching netflix in bed, checking email when the MBA is in the other room.

When I leave the house which one I take just depends on what i need to do and where I am going.

Nope. I need an actual computer most days and my iPad is just an in between. I work with a lot of documents and that is not something an iPad is usually good for. Viewing and sending them it works fine but when I need to sit down and get a lot of work done a computer is typically involved.

My setup has remained mostly unchanged - powerful desktop + thin and light 12-14 inch laptop. The only difference is I'm using the laptop less often nowadays. For me though, the iPad still can't replace the laptop as there are some things that I need the laptop for which the iPad can't do or doesn't do well (e.g. work as Plex Media Server sharing 2TB of content while overseas on vacation).

I still have the same old MacBooks that I had before I got both of my iPads and I still use them everyday. I just prefer to do most of my browsing on either iPad now.

Eventually I plan on retiring the 2010 MB because the battery is showing as replace and it swelled up and broke through the trackpad breaking the plastic on each side.

I plan on getting a MBP or a Mac Mini, not sure which.

I have MBP early2008 thinking the same.

I just downsized my 17" 2010 MBP to a 13" rMBP.

I am hoping to upgrade my iPad from a Gen 3 to the new Air at the end of the year ( ... Christmas present maybe. :D )

I still use my laptop a lot for work and school. My iPad is usually used more when I am on the road and need to do a quick thing. Laptop and iPad are usually used equally during customer meetings.
