I think for some its just too much trouble. I have relatives that have a big mess with their iPhones because they don't remember what computer they last synced to.

The irony of this is, iOS5 is supposed to allow "untethering" of your iPhones so you don't HAVE to sync anymore...

It comes down to ignorance. People simply don't know or care to know about iPhone updates or any other OS updates for that matter. Laziness or just not having the time to learn all the new features is another reason. I have watched endless youtube videos and repeat Apple Keynotes to learn everything about the new OS's. Not to mention reading forum after forum.

I bet there are people who upgraded to the 4S and don't even know that the volume button is now a camera shutter button. Or if you double tap the home button while locked that you can open the camera app. Since the 4S came preloaded with IOS5 I bet there are people who are barely using the full potential of the iPhone and it's software.

I helped a relative upgrade from the original iPhone to the iPhone 4 (transferred her old stuff to the new phone, etc...), and she had NEVER upgraded the original iPhone OS. Her phone didn't even have a button for the App store LOL It was running iOS 1.something.

I too find myself pretty wacky 4 alanis.

If I had the original iPhone with original OS I would have put it on display in my house. That phone is legendary and I would keep it forever :D Never know how much it could be worth in the future.

I think it either comes down to pure laziness, or people just don't know how to update their softward (which is quite sad). My mom has the original iPad and she has never updated it once. However, when iOS 5 was released and I was over the house, I took the initiative to back it up, sync, and update it. Otherwise, my mom would never of even knew about it.

Not to mention how iTunes makes it not easy for the average person to sync.

Just because some users have not "upgraded" does _not_ make them lazy or unaware. Those with years of experience know very well that not every upgrade is an advancement. Many have learned after being early adopters, that there is a price to pay for installing an OS that is not fully debugged. Furthermore they may not need or want certain "features" that come in the latest version.

Many people are obsessed with having the "latest" without questioning, but simply following what Apple wants. To continue to maintain the momentum of selling "the latest" to their devoted "followers". It's as simple as that.

I understand why people might wait to upgrade until a jailbreak is available, but I don't understand just not updating. I have a friend who refuses to update her phone. I even offered to do it for her. She has no jailbreak or anything. She just doesn't want to take the time.

I also have another friend who, until he got the 4s, was running 3.0 on an iPhone 3G. He just had no interest in ever hooking his phone to a computer. Didn't even have music on it.

I'm always updating unless there's a jailbreak I really want.

I'm surprised Apple doesn't send out emails to all iOS users of OS updates. Or now with iOS5, through imessage.

I know two people who bought iPhones a few months ago and have never updated them. They are still running 4.3 or whatever but they also only have access to a computer where they work. Updating is not an easy option for them.

I have a 3GS that stayed on 4.3 up until last week when the untether JB was released. I finally upgraded to 5.0.1 and just JB it today.

Its interesting how Apple people shout the "OMG Android Fragmentation!! I can't update my phone!!" stuff when the majority of their fellow users don't even bother to update their own iphones

Its like self-inflicted fragmentation!

No..

Its not being lazy, the fact is lots of users just don't care. As long as their phone works they neither know nor want to know about OS updates, whatever platform they're on. Same as the Android fragmentation issue getting blown out of proportion, for most Android users its just not an issue.
