I wonder if Microsoft has something equivalent to the 'Apple Human Interface Guidelines' for windows interfaces. Everything in that reference makes sense and windows seems to be going the opposite way!

I think thats why people say it doesn't feel right, personally to me it seems like a big website! with popups everywere!

Seems like every day I find something annoying in XP vs OS X.
Here's a few of my peeves:
1. No expose'
2. Can't drag documents to open programs in the taskbar. Although you can drag them to closed programs in the quick launch.
3. Can't stand how windows programs like to grab the foreground whenever they're done with something.
4. Disk images harder to use, need 2 or more 3rd party apps
5. Multitasking is awful

I get nauseated just thinking about Windows. I would rather place my hands on a hot stove than lay my hands on a PC mouse. Truly sickening.

I 100% agree, I am lucky enough not to ever use a PC. But those times when I have used one, I feel like I'm all thumbs. No matter what OS (98,2000 or XP), they all seem crude and unpolished. I use three different Mac OSs (9.2.2, 10.2.8 and 10.3.9).

I've been using Windows since I can remember, and OSX for about 4 years. I'm still better and more productive in Windows. I just love the 'start' menu in Windows. I think it's unbeatable. Launchbar is good too.

The main thing is I think I'm always trying to use expose on XP ... lol.

I hate that too, I do it all the time :(. I have my PC folding and downloading the HD shows I cannot fit into my schedule. Other than that, I hardly ever use it :p

Yeah, I know what you mean. The Taskbar way of handling open windows is atrocious. My biggest gripe is forgetting that there's no inbuilt spell checker. :(

Another major gripe! I get so used to having OSX watch my grammatical back and then hop over to XP and it all goes wrong. I have pretty good spelling but there are a few instances where I get some help, and it's always nice to have a safety net ;)

My school provided us all with PC laptops. I hate them. I switched earlier this year and constantly try to do expose or drag a file over a folder and expect it to open. How did I ever use Windows.

Did those computers come at an increased price to freshman year tuition? I have heard of a few schools having a mandatory increase of $x,xxx to freshman year to cover a notebook of some sort....just curious how your setup works.

I wouldn't say that I've gotten worse at using Windows, though I do find myself using Windows in a slightly different way than I used to.

For example, I'll find myself going to File / Exit to close a program, rather than just clicking X. In IE, I've used File / New Window to open a new IE window, rather than just simply clicking the IE icon in quick launch, like I used to do.

A few mistakes have crept in though:

I've been using IE and gone to open a new tab, then realised it doesn't have them. Oh and there was that time that I tried to do a copy with the keyboard and ended up pressing Alt+C instead of CTRL+C or for paste ALT+V. Then using Outlook one day, I almost sent an e-mail to somebody"something.com instead of somebody@something.com. Plus the common attempt at using Expose and realising that it doesn't exist.

Just all manner of silly things like that!

My ability to troubleshoot and deal with Windows problems has gone completely down the drain, due to lack of practice with this on my Apple!

Also though I have gotten a little slower at both if that makes any sense. I guess you could say I was at my best with Windows when that was all I knew, but now I find myself running into doors on both systems and attempting to do things I know works on one but doesn't on the other.

It sounds like you have a UK keyboard on one computer, and a US keyboard on the other

Meh, as I'm sure is the case with many other MR members I'm PC at work and Mac at home. Occasionally I'll fumble on the keys a bit(most often copy/paste) but over all it's not to hard a transition between the two. I mean they look quite different so it really is like using 2 different pieces of software.
I mean using Word doesn't make me worse at photoshop and vice versa.

Was once brilliant with Windows, right on through to Win2K - I did most of my early Sys Admin work on NT networks (though there was that one Mac OS 7 network...), so 2K was mostly easy too. Right around 2002 I started using Macs and OS X, and now I'm a complete Windows klutz. I had to work on a Windows XP laptop the other day, and it took me a few minutes to even find the darn control panel. Worse, I've forgotten the deep insides of Win NT/2K - all the registry hacks, networking tricks, software configuration issues - all gone.

I use both regularly so I don't really have a problem with either.

Me too, although I tend to move my mouse to the wrong corner to close/minimize/maximize windows - I do this on both windows and macs.

Also, sometimes I move my mouse to the bottom left corner of my screen to initiate Expose when I'm at work, only to remember windows doesn't have that...noooooooo!

I know what you mean. My family used to call asking me how to troubleshoot dial-up connections and printer settings. Now I have to think about it and ask them to read out what they have on their screen before I can begin to help!

Thankfully, three of the four most common culprits of tech support requirements have switched to Macs now so it makes life a lot easier. They just don't call for tech support.... :D

I always use copy and paste and find that I press the windows button instead of the control button  However apart from that I still use a Windows computer pretty well, for heaven sake I even help my friend who has a copy of XP work it. That's the only place I touch XP too, as the other pc's I touch are windows 2000.

I keep hitting the Alt key instead of the Ctrl key for shortcuts on the Thinkpad i use for work, because i'm so used to where the Command key is on my PowerBook. That's the main problem I have. I also go to the top left to close/minimise etc, but of course you can still do that in windows anyway.

Oh and someone mentioned the " and @ symbol confusion... i'm still sufferering from that problem though getting slightly more accustomed to the Mac version (@ on the number 2 key)

I stop caring, i can do the basic, open app and stuff but like shortcuts i dont use cuz i know all those head acks are gone!

I don't feel that I am worse at using Windows now, just even more exasperated. My parents bought me a Windows desktop machine in 2002, since I had never used one before (and as a junior in high school at the time, all my friends had Windows and I felt left out). It's not a bad machine, it still works perfectly fine, but I'd rather use my PowerBook any day. I just seem to get so much more done, instead of spending time going through wizards and running spyware scans.

I dont know for me using a mac almost seems.. calming or something i cant really explain it but sitting in front of a pc always feels like work and I hate it.

it could be related to things like the expirience I had five minutes ago. Got a new printer for the two new macs in the family. Hook it up to my sister's emac no problem didnt even need to find a driver (this is very different from windows 70 percent of my windows issues seemed to be printers one time my computer was running insanely slow me and my pops checked everything bad ram bad video card turned out the problem was the printer wtf  ) So anyway now I want to hook my ibook up to this printer and it takes like two secconds make network have my siter join enable printer shareing and it works. With a pc I would have probably messed around with random things for hours and given up angry but Im mac for everything except bf2 now :D .

It's a little different, but I was on vacation for a month last year with zero computer access, and when I came home and sat down in front of my own G5 it felt sorta funny for the first few days.

That was really odd, and I suppose similar to the experience of moving away from Windows for a while and de-adjusting, so to speak.

i wish i could get rid of my dell laptop

Ah, but you can. Just follow the advice of one of the signatures on here - drag your PC off your desk and drop it into the trash :D
