Its the easy cable, the fullspeed one, the KCE-422i. Has anyone used this one and gotten it to work, or are you guys all using the kca-420i (the box unit)?

Please let me know, as I may just pick up the kca-420i to use my iphone.

Yeah. I have the cda-9885 coupled with the kce-422i, doesn't work. If someone could test the 420i to see if it works, that would be great!

For what it's worth today the iPhone did not get hot like it did the other day when connected to the full speed iPod cable.

I wonder if the ambient temperature had something to do with it because the 2 times I noticed that it was getting "fry an egg hot" the temperature out was near 100 deg F.

We'll just have to see as I use it more.

My CDE-9856 works with the Full Speed cable. However, I do get occasional interference over the car speakers. Seems to be when the iPhone acquires signal from a new tower (i.e. I pass under a bridge, or beneath trees).

The iPhone does prompt me to place it in airplane mode when I connect. However, it's not great for me to miss calls while on the road.

Anyone know if/when Alpine will release a shielded cable or something that will be certified for use with the iPhone?

This happens with all GSM phones when next to speaker cabling. If you ran shielded cable (Monster, etc) to your front speakers that my fix your problem.

I thought so too (as I get similar interference on my desktop PC speakers), but then I did an experiment. I placed the iPhone in the same location (small storage compartment to the left of the steering column), but did NOT connect it to the Full Speed cable. I played songs over the iPhone's internal speakers instead.

I've tested this extensively, and I get no interference over the speakers when the iPhone is not connected to the Alpine interface cable.

Now, it may be that the Full Speed cable itself is routed too close to the front speakers, which are located in the door. I could reroute the Full Speed cable to a location more in the center of the dash, further from the speakers, I guess.

Still seems to me that Alpine might need to release a better-shielded version of the Full Speed cable for iPhone use. All other aspects work great -- full control of the iPhone from my head unit, and it charges no problem.

JVC KD-HDR1 Doesn't Work

I tried the iPhone on my JVC KD-HDR1 and unfortunately it didn't work. I think David Pogue or Walt Mossberg said, however, that Apple might add some more support in a future firmware update.

I sure hope so...

*Update*

So I emailed Alpine PR on Monday. Explaining my disappointment with the fact that I spent nearly $600 on a headunit 2 months before the iPhone release that is not compatible. I was surprised to receive a call from them this morning. They said they are fully aware of the issue of the iPhone not working with some of the iPod full speed headunits and that they actually have engineers at Apple today trying to sort out the problem. He also said that if all goes according to plan they should have a fix by sometime next week. He wasn't sure if it would be a fix in the iPhone or the Alpine Headunit.

Awesome news!! Music whilst I drive again!!:)

maybe...

Now THAT is interesting. What's the number to Alpline PR? and what words did you use to get them to admit that statement? I'll call them right now and prod for more info. ;)

*UPDATE*

Just received a follow up call from Alpine. They said that the new update from Apple should fix the issues with the Alpine Head Units. I haven't updated my iPhone yet, so maybe someone can give it a shot and report back?

Yup, fixed it for me. I have a Alpine 9885 with the iPod cable, and was getting sound from the iPhone speakers. With 1.0.1, works as its supposed to. :D

I have the 9885 as well. I'll have to update my phone to try this out.

I also have the 300BT Bluetooth module for my Alpine deck, and have been having some issues with it seeing the iPhone sometimes.. It's pretty random, sometimes it will see it and pick up a phone call, othertimes it won't see the phone at all. :(

Works now on my 9883 and the fullspeed cable. Very surprised, as I thought it would take an update on Alpines end.

Time to sell the nano.

Thanks for the update.

Kind of off topic, but on the Alpine deck's (I have the 9885) how do you go to the different play lists? Or, do you have to do it on the iPhone and the Alpine picks it up?

Thread is a bit old but thought I would post.

Got the CDA-9883 in my car with the Full Speed cable. Works great but I hate that I can't control the music from the iphone. Its way more dangerous to find artists on the head unit than it is on the iphone. I tried some hack to hold down the home button for 6-secs but that sent an error to the head unit and the audio came from the iphone speakers.

I also have the AI-NET -RCA adapter (from my prev unit) I'm actually thinking of just using that so I can control the ipod and see the album art. Also then I can take calls through my car speakers. I'll leave the full speed cable plugged in I guess since it charges the phone.would have been nice to have both control on the iphone AND the head unit. Not sure their reasoning there. All well.

Sorry. also thought I would share this: I was looking around for a long time for a good vent cradle. The proclipusa was WAY to expensive. This one I found must be new. and is much less expensive:

CDA-9856 & iPhone 3G

I don't know if anyone is following this thread anymore, but I just wanted to report that my iPhone 3G works fine - except for charging - with my 2006 Alpine CDA-9856 with Full Speed iPod cable. Searching, selection, ffwd, back, all that works fine.

Now, if Alpine would make a Full Speed cable that could charge on the USB pins...

I'm sure they will but it'll probably take a few months....

Truly annoying. May go with a new deck, the 200 dollar "ipod" deck that has no CD player.

Tested it out and it works fine. Charges as well. The output is usb, with a small adaptor for ipods/iphones.

Very interested in this as I would like to be able to plug in my bluetooth headset to charge in the car. Wonder if it would work.

What deck is that?

I just got an Alpine CDE-9852 with the KCE-422i cable and I'm hoping it will work with the iPhone. According to the Alpine Tech Support I called, it will... I'll post back once I get it here, installed, and tested.

I have the same combo and it sort of works. I have to start what I want to listen to prior to connecting the phone because I have no control through the headunit. I can skip tracks but not search. I also cant control it through the iphone because it just says accessory attached.

All Pioneer and alpine units work with the iphone. The only thing it does not allow is charging the iphone. I can also say that a sony one i had did not work

I have a CDA-9887 and had the same problem with not being able to search and found if you turn off shuffle and repeat, it works fine. However, it still doesn't charge...

The combination I talked about using, (Alpine CDE-9852 with the KCE-422i), works fine. As with any of the iPods, you can no longer control the iPod with the actual device, but only with the head unit. You also have to turn off shuffle to enable control, but I like to just shuffle my music anyway, so I don't bother. Charging also works and doing an electrical test it showed that it doesn't put off too much power either. Side not, but I figured I'd mention it, I use a Harman Kardon Drive + Play in my other car and that also works with the iPhone. Every so often it throws temper tantrums and I have to reboot both the phone and the unit, but usually it works. I have to make sure the iPhone is unlocked and at the springboard first when plugging in either the Alpine or the Harman Kardon Drive + Play, and that drastically reduced failures; usually, if I'm at the springboard, it works right away with problem. :)
