wow, all the sites are nice. I am building a site myself, w/o dreamweaver! Yes, i am crazy, but it is fun. I will be needing to have a host and a domain name. I had one a while ago, but looking back on it, it is/was ghetto! lol.

I did, it was version 2 of my site (which is now on version 3 using Freeway). iweb works but I found you had to constantly trick it into doing what you wanted. It also seemed to make bad html that didn't play nice with firefox. In the end I just could not get it to work for me and the work flow of adding galleries was just too tedious. I have a lot of galleries on my site so workflow speed is all important. Freeway is a nice mac like alternative to the likes of dreamweaver

iweb and photos question

Interesting forum. I'm a newbie, so...
I'm creating an architect's website (mine). The home page has 7 photos, ea with a link to its own (project) page. Each page, then, has up to 8 photos on it (describing that particular job). It'd be nice if people could click on these kinda small (8 on a page) images, and they automatically became full screen; then click again, and takes you back to the reduced version (job page).
Is there an efficient way to do this (simple?!) feature? Or do I have to create a new web page for each photo (7x8=56), link em, link back, etc.
Hope I've explained myself.
Thank you so much for any input!

My iWeb based 'photo' website is here.

Ain't gonna happen... Unless you're planning on degrading the images to the point of being unrecognizable, you'll have to plan on some people copying the images

It would have been nice to have an iWeb-based automated watermarking, since the basic alternative would be to do them all by hand within iPhoto before iWeb synchronizes with it.

As a rule if thumb, minimizing potential damage from image theft starts with not having high resolution versions online for them to take.

Within iWeb, I did find that there were two ways to 'speedbump' people a little. The first is to uncheck the option which allows people to download the image directly. IIRC, this is in the menu options ... check near the "Subscribe" button...?

The second is that I added a small snippet of text on each photos webpage that is strategically located. Its just a simple "(C) Year Name". The idea is that if a person does a screen shot to grab the image (since they won't necessarily be able to easily find the actual path to the jpeg), they capture this bit too ... its "strategic location" overlays the image.

For example, on a SLOW connection, when this page loads, you'll see a little bit of grey text (pretty much centered) on the black background before the thumbnails load.

Once the page has completed loading and you click on the first thumbnail (see here), the text becomes sufficiently evident...clicking through, you can see that the text stays in the same spot.

I did find the selection of where to place this text to be dicy...notice that on some later photos with different ratios (scans from 35mm film) that it nearly is lost off the top of the image (example). This "where to place it" challenge manifests itself mostly when shifting between landscape & portrait.

Its not the greatest solution, but it is simple enough and better than nothing.

If you're considering iWeb to make a photo website, I would suggest going with Rapidweaver instead. It really is a vastly superior program; the sites end up much more streamlined and seem to be much quicker to load.

RW also has a great plugin architecture, which allows you to get right in there and mess with code, if you want to.

All that having been said, having tried and tried to make my own photosite using both RW and iWeb, I think most people would be better off with a dedicated hosting service. Smugmug, for instance, allows you to customize your site almost ad infinitum via CSS. If you really want a top notch site and are looking to sell your work, Photo Shelter really cannot be beat.

I'm debating which route to go down, whether to do the Photium/Clikpic thing or try to create my own website in iWeb 09. As an amateur, my images are nothing special but I'd still like a decent looking site to showcase my better stuff on, but I'm not too keen on the type of sites you get with the iWeb templates.

I'm just wondering if anyone's managed to create something that moves away from the 'traditional' iWeb look, and if so whether they'd mind sharing their efforts on here?

I made my site in iWeb. I'm an amateur photographer as well as an amateur to making websites! Check it out and let me know what you think! I WISH I could figure out how to have music continually play. I can embed an imeem player on each page, but then it restarts on every page...ugh...By the way, which route did you end up going? Do you have a link to your website now that it is probably finished?

We use ifp3.com, its low maintenance just upload, watermarking is just a case of switching it on, it plays music and is paypal friendly, it saves so much time.
I redirect my domains to ifp. we pay $20 a month. I dont have time to mess with sites etc

I'm online with iWeb, but i don't operate a fully functional business from it. That starts next year, and will likely be from SquareSpace or some other, more flexible site creation system.

Check it out.

I've also done a site here in iWeb, but I use Lightroom to create my galleries. I find iWeb difficult to handle large amounts of photos, and the quality of the jpeg's are lacking (imo, even with "optimize images" turned off).

I would say iWeb is "ok"...and only if you aren't a pro. I would suggest Dreamweaver, so as you progress over the years to come, you will be far less limited. SEO, for example.... I don't **believe** is even possible with an iWeb site. That would be an immediate deal breaker for *me*.

As others have mentioned, the image quality really suffers in iweb. Major bummer.

Good luck....

Photography in iWeb

Hello -

I just created my photography in iWeb. I'm quite pleased with the initial layout, however, I'm open to suggestions for the portfolio tab. Please let me know if you have any feedback and/or tricks to make my photos really stand out nicely using iWeb. Thank you in advance!

I tried to make one in iWeb but I found it to be a massive hassle to do anything. I gave up and paid for a viewbook account, $9 a month. What was important to me was my time, I don't need to invest any of it in building the site, I can quickly put my photographs into the image manager, set the pacing and leave it be and it's professional for image editors to view.

Respect is due if you're showing work with iWeb.

Wow, your site is unbelievable. You made that completely in iWeb? Did you use custom templates?

While I'm impressed with what you've done. I don't think it should take 3 clicks to get to your portfolio though. Lose the intro page at the very least.

Thanks - yup, made the entire website on my own without any templates...just started with a blank clean space! I need to create a more professional portfolio page though...that's why I had the intro page there. If you have any suggestions, I'd be glad to hear them. I was looking into coverflow, however, the consensus was that it would take away from the beauty of the photos...

I put up a website a few years ago with iWeb to have a list of wedding locations I have worked at and samples from each spot. It did have some limitations but overall worked decent. the site is up at:
http://www.bayareaweddingresources.com/
haven't touched it in years and maybe one day will redesign it if I have time.

For my main photo site I have used different bludomain templates over the years and have been happy with them. Very easy to customize and they look good.

Im most definitely not talented in designing or building websites, it's quite literally a foreign language to me. So I did the best I could to make a clean intro page in iWeb and link to other pages that tie into my photography business.

It's actually quite a small site and loads fast, I do use smugmug to host my galleries and I really like them as a company, but I need to learn how to create my site fully in smugmug, I will switch over to that eventually.

I have a site but I didn't make it in iWeb. I was thinking about using iWeb but for some reason I decided against it (don't remember why). I made mine at wix.com RomanMFrance.com

I have had a lot of emails regarding my site and how I implemented flash galleries and due to the site I used for instructions been taken down, I thought that I would add the instruction here to MacRumors. Here goes:

My iWeb site in general:

The site is and designed created in iWeb with the flash galleries for photos being AutoViewer.

iWeb Theme:

The theme used is custom made as I was able to create exactly what I wanted without having to "fight" with one of the pre-made themes.

Flash Gallery/AutoViewer:

AutoViewer is a free flash gallery made by SimpleViewer and on their site you'll find different types of galleries that you can use. AutoViewer just worked for me.

How I create my AutoViewer Galleries:

I use Aperture 3 for my image editing however I use the Lightroom 3 Beta for my AutoViewer creating as it has more options and is much easily to use than the Aperture plugging available or the text based customization provided with AutoViewer.

Regardless of what way you create you're galleries, make sure that when you export your images for the gallery that they are sized exactly (600x400 pixels) how you want them to be on your website. This is to save every extra kilobyte of bandwidth when loading the webpage.

Once you have created the gallery and are happy with it, upload it to your server. I create a folder name "Flash" that I place all of my galleries in for the ease of finding and changing them. To make sure that you're gallery is uploaded, enter the path to the index.html file in the galleries folder. Example: http://stefanfeldmannphotography.com/Flash/Sports/index.html Note the URL as you will need it later.

Adding the Gallery to your iWeb site:

The flash gallery is added using iframes. First, drag a HTML Widget from the iWeb inspector onto the page you want your gallery.

Then in the gray box that appears add this code:

Code:
<iframe src="http://YourSite.com/FlashGalleryFolder/index.html" width="900" height="650" scrolling="no" style="border:none;" frameborder="0"></iframe>

Change the YourSite path to the one that you noted earlier. You can also change the width, height, scrolling and style to your preference. It your gallery loads inside iWeb, the above code is correct.

It is crucial that your galleries files be on a server not on your local machine as otherwise they won't appear in iWeb when you are creating your site.

So there you have it, how to add a flash gallery to your iWeb site.

iWeb Extras:

While I'm at it ill talk about what programs I use to enhance my iWeb site.

I use iWebSEOTool by Rage to add search engine optimization as well as custom page titles and other features.

I use iTweak to add a php contact to my website as well as to add iPhone redirection. The iPhone redirection is added via the search/replace function using this code:

Code:
type="text/javascript">
<!--
if((navigator.userAgent.match(/iPhone/i))||(navigator.userAgent.match(/iPod/i))){
var question = confirm("Would you like to view our iPhone Site? The main site contains flash galleries.")
if (question){
window.location = "http://www.YouriPhoneSite.com";
}else{}}
//-->
</script>

Thats that. I hope it helps all of those working with iWeb to create their place on the internet!

I built the first few pages of mine in iWeb. I was genreally ok with it, but I want to change the text "Welcome to My Space" to anything else in the world, but for the life of me, I can't figure out how.

Part of the problem is that the Mac (and iWeb) that was used to create this page:

http://drewloker.com/

is sick and doesn't work well. It is an older G4 12" Laptop...and is not going to be repaired.

So, I have been trying to repair the page from FrontPage, and I just can't seem to figure it out.

Can somebody take a look and offer a suggestion on what exactly needs to be edited to change that text?

Thanks!!
