GDDR5 is just the new memory for graphics cards. It used to be GDDR3 and sometiems GDDR4, but GDDR5 is new with new features and is twice as fast as GDDR3, thus allowing more bandwidth.

It won't work in OS X (itll work fine in Windows) for a late 2008 MacPro until the flashing of the card is found

Around $400

WTF!?!?!??!!?!?!?!?!?

You can buy a 4870, right now, TODAY, from Newegg.com for $179.00

I can't BELIEVE they have the balls to charge MORE THAN DOUBLE for that card.

I am completely disgusted with Apple today. Disgusted.

Not much difference in the price in the UK.

£160 on the Apple site. (Incl Tax)
£153 on 3rd Party sites. (" " " " )

£ for $, we always get the rough deal, even with exchange rates and taxes.

It's not that bad!.....it's worse

BUT you aren't counting the mini DisplayPort in the Apple version! Yes, the Apple version doesn't even have two DVI ports, it has one DVI and one wonkyport. So if you're driving two 30" dells like me, you'll need a mini->dual link DVI Apple dongle, which is a mere $99.99US.

So the Newegg version isn't only much cheaper, but it doesn't require extra (needlessly expensive) equipment. :( Maybe I'll just get the 3870 and be done with it...

Apple what the?

I have a 2007 Mac Pro 3GHz 8 Core Apple Computer.
1) Why if you're trying to make the best use the ATI 4870? I love the card but the ATI 5800 just came out. I really think AMD/ATI would not care & sold that to Apple!

2) I have the only 8 Core Mac Pro that will not run the ATI 4870? I have a 4850 I just flashed in it now! Why will the lets get real now not the best ATI 4870 With only 512mb not work with 2006-2007 Mac Pro's?? (PCIe2 GPU's for everyone but us are 100% backwards compliant to PCIe1)

3)Apple it only took you being forced we all know you did not care or see when we wanted the Geforce 8800GT I bought after the Geforce 260 was out I payed for it from you Apple.

4)I have for the first time not defended Apple but bashed them & No I don't want a 2600XT (it is PCIe2) or my old 1900XT with the same amount of ram as the I want the new low stranded in Top of the line computer GPU's a base $399 ATI 4870 in my old 2007 8 core Mac Pro or I walk.

Thank you all for letting me get that out:apple:

well people what did you expect? *THINK* This is Apple after all. No way could we have reasonably expected newegg or oem prices.

I don't like the price either but i'll have to get it anyways since gpu choices for mac are scarce and i'll like to run one of the LED displays.

My other gripe: it ships in 5-7 weeks. need it now Apple, now.

LaCie LED

What monitor could I buy then? I really like the idea of a built in webcam as I skype a good few people.

I've got a Dell at the moment which is this one http://www.google.com/products/cata...&ie=UTF-8&cid=15720893788189028081#ps-sellers

and I really don't like it. Viewing pictures on it is horrible. Colours are wrong and never look sharp compared to my 24" iMac.

Get a LaCie 30 inch I did. I love it you like that apple:apple:
Or if you like a 24 inch LaCie got you there to The LaCie 720 Monitor’s ground–breaking RGB-LED backlight technology produces purer red, green and blue primaries, resulting in a larger range of vibrant colors previously unattainable by CCFL-based LCD monitors

Isn't that just the upgrade price in the Mac Pro configuration screen?

I am pretty sure the Radeon HD 4870 upgrade kit is £280 for the early 2008 Mac Pro.

The 4870 should be dropping in price retail too soon.

No it didn't, the 5800's aren't out yet. They're only releasing the RV740 to replace to the 4830's and the RV790 aka 4890 to replace the 4870. It's just a refresh, not a new architecture (it still sucks we won't get the latest, but such is life)

try J&R to save tax + live.com cashback

I pre-ordered by through J&R. Save tax and if you go through the live.com cashback site, you can get 6% back.

Will be getting it later than if I ordered through apple, but save about $30-50 when all is told. (corp discount gets the card for $321 at apple, add tax, and you're back up to $349).

anybody happen to read this? the folks over at OWC testing the 4870 with the 08 & 06 mac pros and report their results. interesting.... and maybe a little troubling if you were planning on using the mini display port with your 08 mac pro. hopefully by the time the kit ships, apple will have ironed out the problems. maybe the reason for the 5-7 week wait is to get their software/OS updated to work fully with the 4870 rather than because of supply.

Specifically what you might be interest in is:

Mac Pro ‘800MHz Memory Bus Models:
———-
4870 - Works A-OK via its DVI port. No-go via the miniDisplay Port.

GT120 - Works like a champ with both DisplayPort and DVI Port.

Mac Pro ‘667MHZ Memory Bus Models:
————
No go with either of Video Cards from the new Mac Pros.

I imagine 10.5.7 will fix this, as it is listed as a requirement.

I guess that's the main reason for the delay then. The cards i'm sure are "available" but they won't ship out until apple released 10.5.7 to insure that they'll work with the 2008 mac pros (which are probably the only people that are ordered the 4870 kit)

Has anyone used the 4870 display port native in windows via bootcamp? Since this issue may be related to drivers for OS X I'm wondering if the ATI drivers work the display port in windows (xp, vista, 7....any of 'em).

Has anyone elses order been delayed? I had 2 cards on order and got an email today saying that they are being delayed till 20/05/2009 (to be shipped by).

hoping that 10.5.7 comes soon

i think shortly after 10.5.7 drops, 4870's will start shipping. hoping to see that any days now (and not the additional 4-5 week delay that people are getting)

I got the same email and same revised shipping date. I was looking forward to receiving it next week. :(

What is the best Nvidia card for Mac at the moment/is coming soon, sans the Quadro?

8800GT is the best nvidia card atm from Apple to work under OSX, it is still faster than the GT120. Otherwise quadro it is. The new Quadro 4800 coming out in may will be the best you could get...but not what you are after. Otherwise step up to a 4870 which is still good for most autodesk products.
