we can tell you are confused

this is just a carrier update for t-mobile customers if you insert a t.mobile sim to an unlocked gsm phone it'll get this update, all carriers around the world get apple update carrier files, they configure specific values for each carrier, mms settings, lte, apn settings etc...

Guess I wasn't clear enough. I have a factory (not AT&T) unlocked iPhone 5. The stuff I read made me believe that only the AT&T unlocked iPhones would receive the carrier update.

The front page of MR says that it's for T-Mobile iPhone 5s and ATT unlocked ones. So that means that if I go into Apple and buy a factory unlocked phone for full price, I won't get 4G LTE through T-Mobile?

The factory unlocked one is the same A1428 model sold by AT&T so yes you can get LTE.

Are jailbroken devices not receiving the update? It keeps "checking for update..." without any results...

It most likely just means the A1428 ("AT&T") model, as opposed to the A1429 sold internationally (which doesn't support LTE band 4 which is the band used by T-Mobile).

It's not an update you get from Settings > General > Software Update. We have to wait for T-Mobile to roll it out first. Then you go to Settings > General > About to look for a carrier update automatically.

Oh, gotcha. Thanks.

Thought it's rolling out today?

Well no.

The A1428 is sold internationally as well, in fact in all the americas.

The factory unlocked iPhone is the AT&T model (A1428). In any case, any non-jailbroken iPhone running 6.1.x with a T-mobile sim installed will get the carrier update when it becomes available (looks like early next week now).

Ok hold on so let me get this straight. I literally just bought this iPhone 5. It is factory unlocked through AT&T and on 6.1.3. However when updated to that, it had a AT&T SIM card in it.

So does that mean I need to restore it with my tmobile SIM card in it now?

No, you just need to stick your tmobile sim and it will receive the correct carrier settings.
No need to restore.

But it's supposed to auto configure mms settings according to the update...I had to type everything in just like any other tmobile iPhone I've had.

You won't need the MMS settings once the update is available (someone said above that it's been pushed back to Monday).

On the other hand, if you *just* bought the phone then you'd probably do better to return it while still in the returns window, and swap it for the new model when it's released (next week, I think it is). Otherwise, you may get stuck with 2G when not in an LTE area.

Why would I get stuck with 2G in an LTE area?

Just curious if anyone has received the T-MO carrier update yet. Are just the A1428s getting the update or are all factory unlocked iphones getting the update?

Just received carrier update. Only change I see is 4G instead of 3G and the apn settings have changed. I'm on a 4S. Settings/general/about.

I just received the carrier update.

After the update, cellular data APN setting changed, LTE APN settings are left blank, MMS settings changed, and Personal Hotspot can not be modified. It is now required to contact T-Mobile to enable the hotspot feature.

I just realized this change, too. There's not even any Internet Tethering settings in the APN anymore. Bummer.

I received the update too! Phone says 4G instead of 3G (or as I call it, faux G). Still going to buy a TMO iphone though so I can take full advantage of the AWS network.
