I'm about to go in the store and do this today. Do they care if there are some small dents? I'm kind of worried they won't take it...

If they're small then I wouldn't worry about it. I bought an iPhone 4 on Craigslist for $50. It looked cosmetically perfect. The front camera was broken, but they didn't check. The rep. in the store noticed that the water damage sensor on the bottom was red and had to enter that into her system. They gave me $200 for it.

Thank you! I will try trading mine today and we'll see. Hopefully they take it! :)

Did they look at the water damage indicators at the top and bottom of the phone with a flashlight?

The water damage sensors on mine were red. I asked if I would still get $200. She checked the water damage box on her computer and said "Let's see." Still got $200.

So if you do the trade in the store do they give you the $200 gift card after they inspect it?

What do you mean they were able to process it immediately.

Just traded in my wife's iPhone 4S for $200 in store. Hopefully I can answer a few questions that have come up here and in other forums:
1. $200 was given in the form of a gift card handed directly to me. I then walked to the payment kiosk in the store and applied it to my account right away to pay towards future wireless bill. Account says -$200 balance already.
2. You CAN still do the trade in even if you bought from Apple.com preorder, which is what I did. Many people have been told that you must buy directly from VZW, which simply isn't true.
3. Evaluation of the 4S wasn't all that thorough, basically just made sure it turned on and was free of major defects. Mine had a few minor dents but nothing major. Then verified ESN of new iPhone 6 and I was good to go.
4. This was really easy, took 10 min of my time. Nice!

Did you get someone to confirm that, or did they make an exception for you?

Every rep. that I've talked to insists that the phone must be purchased in from Verizon. But there are no terms and conditions anywhere public.

I would like to know this too.

Every rep I've talked to says that it has to be purchased from Verizon.

I just talked to another rep. They're so dumb. They're just assuming. If you really press them on it then they will refer you to the FAQs online. Nowhere on that page does it say it the phone must come from Verizon. When you point this out, they will admit that it's ok to buy it elsewhere. Ugh. I already bought it from their store. Could have saved some cash.

EDIT: I could post my chat transcript if you want.

I just called my local Verizon store.

The manager there confirmed that it had to be ordered directly from Verizon.

So for all those that ordered from Apple.com and were able to still get the $200 iPhone trade-in. I guess you got lucky and good for you.

I guess a manager is better than these online reps, but:

XXXXX: Hello! Thank you for contacting Verizon Wireless Sales Chat! I am here to provide you with outstanding service by answering your questions and helping you navigate through our site more efficiently. May I please have your name?
XXXXX:
Me: Hi
Me: YYYYY
XXXXX: Nice to meet you YYYYY.
XXXXX: How can I assist you today?
Me: I have a question about the $200 iPhone trade-in promotion.
XXXXX: The trade in is after you have purchased, received, and activated the new iphone you can trade in your current iphone on the trade in page and then you will receive a gift card for the $200.
Me: I've been told that to take advantage of that then I must buy the iPhone directly from Verizon Wireless online or in-store, not from Apple or Best Buy. Is that right?
XXXXX: Yes that is correct.
Me: Ok. Lots of people online are reporting that they bought the iPhone 6 from an Apple Store and still got their $200 gift card from a Verizon store for the trade-in. So are you SURE? And are there terms and conditions somewhere that say so?
XXXXX: There would be no way to tie the order placed through Apple to our system as this is the case we require the order be placed through our Site to where we can provide that promotion.
Me: People are reporting that you can just look on the account and see that an iPhone 6 has been activated.
Me: Do you have a copy of the terms and conditions for the offer?
XXXXX: I can send you a link to the FAQ's to view the requirements for the promotion.
XXXXX: Please Click Here to View Terms and Conditions
XXXXX: It is towards the end of the page.
Me: There is nothing on that pages that says that the phone must be purchased from Verizon.
Me: Which is why I am asking.
Me: So that page is the only information you have about the offer?
XXXXX: As long as you ordering the iphone 6 or 6 plus with a Verizon 2 Year Contract you will be able to get the gift card.
Me: So I could go to Best Buy and get an iPhone 6 with a 2 year contract and then go to the Verizon store and trade in and get my $200 gift card?
XXXXX: Yes that is correct.
Me: So earlier in the conversation when I say "Me: I've been told that to take advantage of that then I must buy the iPhone directly from Verizon Wireless online or in-store, not from Apple or Best Buy. Is that right? XXXXX: Yes that is correct."
Me: You were mistaken?
XXXXX: Yes I am sorry it is just better to order directly from Verizon to ensure that you will get the promotion and you know exactly what you are signing up for as far as the plan.

I traded in our old 4 Saturday at like 8pm in store. I had preordered the 6 from Verizon. I asked a rep too and he said it didn't matter who I ordered from. Someone on this site told me they heard you had to get it thru vzw so I did that just to be safe.

Wow...

So I guess people have had luck doing both ways. I don't know, since I actually called my local Verizon store and they checked and told me what they wanted, I'm not going to argue.

I actually can't even trade it in the store because my iPhone isnt shipping until 10/10.

Just a store would be so much easier.

Traded in my iPhone 4 for $200 at a Verizon store in NYC, it literally took 5 minutes of my time. And I can confirm that they will accept the purchase of a 6 from apple.com which is where I purchased from.

Quick, easy, and convenient - 3 adjectives I normally would not describe Verizon but true in this case.

Wish it was such a short wait here. I tried Saturday and there was an hour wait. I went back today, Monday, and it was a 50 minute wait. You'd think they'd have a separate line.
