I quit a few years ago. I was never a coffee drinker but was having a Coke every day. There was a "no sugar challenge" at work and it seemed like a good time to try to quit, and indeed I got a lot of support from the others.

As noted, drink a lot of water and try to get to bed early so that you don't get too many headaches. The interesting thing is how long it takes to get it all out of your system; about two weeks after my last Coke I started getting a runny nose, which is apparently a possible side effect. I was amazed at how long it took to manifest (but it cleared up after a few days).

OMG I'm so glad I read this.

Today is my 7th day and I want to "relapse" so bad. I woke up today thinking I'm just going back to drinking my normal amount of coffee I've been drinking for like 5+ years every single day.

When I googled online I read mixed answers on how long it would take, but didn't think on my 7th day I would feel like this.

I DO feel better today than previous days, but still don't feel normal at all.

Well, somewhat sad to say I "relapsed" tonight. Drank my usual all in one go. At yeah it's pretty late so I wont' be sleeping anytime soon. Oh well. I guess there's always tomorrow...

This is my 7th day too. Just couldn't take it anymore.

:(

What was the motivation for wanting to quit?
I know they say caffeine is bad for you, but it’s hardly like smoking.
If you did nothing that was bad for you, you’d live longer. But would you live happier?

Take alcohol for instance. The advice can vary from never drink, drink no more than x units a day (with some rest days) to have one small glass a day. Depends on what you read.
Personally I drink occasionally but that’s to do with my weight issues mostly.

My point is don’t beat yourself up over drinking a bit of coffee. There are worse things in life.

I haven't had a soda in over six years. After about year two or three, can't remember which, I tried a sip of a Dr. Pepper and Mountain Dew. The sheer amount of chemicals I tasted was enough for me to never go back. Coffee and tea on the other hand is a different story. I am very snooty when it comes to my coffee as well as my tea. Both can have caffeine in them, but that is not why I drink them. I love the taste and flavors. I drink both hot and cold, but after about 1100 am, it is only tea for me.

Soda and power/energy drinks are no go for me. I drank a few way back when and I never got into them. So I haven't had one since about the time I quite soda's.

I used to be a HEAVY diet pepsi drinker growing up. Loved the taste - mostly because my grandparents drank Pepsi and I associated that with vacations to my grandparent's house. (That and the smell of cigarette smoke - love it, because I associated it with childhood vacations). Stopped drinking soda 7+ years ago. Ice Tea (unflavored) or water. Can't even stand the taste of soda anymore.

Kinda awkward to ask for: "Ice Tea, no ice, unsweetened please!" lol.

Same - love the taste of unsweetened tea and black coffee.

Still a fan of cigarette smoke tho. :p (I don't smoke myself).

Speaking of being snooty and coffee...... Peruvian coffee beans ... roasted with a Behmor 1600 roaster... some of the best coffee I've ever had. https://happymugcoffee.com/green-offerings-coffee/814-organic-peru.html

Outstanding re: coffee recommendation!

I have traveled down south, I am sure there are those who can relate, and asked for iced tea and unbeknownst to me, it was sweetened iced tea. Holy smokes! Talk about a sugar rush! I only made that mistake once! But I completely understand ordering iced tea with no ice and unsweetened! LOL.

Try them flat. You won't believe how sickly sweet sodas are until they're flat.

What exactly is your usual? Plain black coffee or something like a brown butter gingersnap cookie with whipped cream and caramel drizzle?

Black cold brew. The darker the better. I call it “ditch water” lol

No sugar
No whip
No half
No milk
None of that junk

Water, ice, coffee.
[doublepost=1550818857][/doublepost]Just wanted to update.

I’m back on my full usual amount of coffee

And to be honest I feel GREAT again lol.

Feels even better than before.

I’m feeling super happy and although I’m pretty sure it’s just bc of the caffeine what can I say?

Maybe I’ll quit another day. I do hope I do.

I actually slammed my iPhone (Apple silicone case on) on the hardwood backside down and luckily it didn’t break. On any other day or another iPhone it could have very well broken I would think. This was 7th day evening. Maybe it was in part bc of withdrawals from coffee? Who knows.

Drink green/herbal tea instead.
This.

Tea, green or black, contains small amounts of caffeine (and more), and prevents most - if not all - withdrawal issues when quitting coffee.

Just be a bit careful if you go for herbal tea because there are some types that aren't actually tea, and they may not contain that precious caffeine...

My favourite is pu'er tea (Chinese fermented green tea), but that's an acquired taste.

(PS! At the moment I'm deep in a coffee phase, but I've been thinking about switching back to tea lately, so maybe this is the nudge I needed...)

Thank you for the tea suggestion but it upsets my stomach.

Are you supposed to drink it black or with milk?

I’ve always done milk and sugar.

Maybe black won’t affect my stomach.

Some teas, (white tea, green tea for example) do not require the addition of milk at all; some may taste better with a little honey, but that is a personal subjective thing.

However, if you drink good quality tea, you may not need to add milk.

Idea!

I might do SWEET tea. The stuff you get at Walmart. Everybody loves sweet tea am I right or am I right? Lol

Now I’m actually excited.

But I’ll just get some next time I’m in the store. Im in no rush to quit coffee after what I’ve been through for the last week.

That was horrible. Now is not the time after that. It was truly like a nightmare in hindsight.

I still can’t believe that something so simple as giving up coffee had such an impact on me

The obvious solution is not to "give up" coffee but to reduce your intake of coffee.

No, I do not like sweet tea, unless you are referring to Turkish apple tea which s something else entirely.

And, while I'm from Europe, - which means Walmart is not a part of our cultural or retail experience.

I'd been drinking 8-10 cups of strong double espresso for decades.
Some years ago I had to quit. First replaced by Coke, then by strong black tea.
I still miss caffeine especially in the morning and after lunch. And it will remain so.
The smell of fresh coffee...

For a different perspective, I’ll never forget my conversation with a doctor about my possibly giving up coffee. He actually laughed at the thought, and said that coffee is the “Nectar of the Gods.”
Did not see that coming.

Anyway, I think of that conversation when I read this:

An Ode to Coffee
875.jpg

Cannot imagine a day without you
You lift the fog and begin life anew
So hot and fragrant; full-bodied and strong
The stuff of story, and legend, and song!

Oh what joy comes with that first steaming cup!
Takes off that cruel edge of waking up
Brings fresh perspective to what is oft bleak
Once again human, I’m now fit to speak.

As dawn is breaking I keep my mug full
Focused and clear, with the strength of a bull
Boldly productive while others still sleep
Neurons are singing; your effects run deep.

Coffee, oh Coffee - I owe you so much!
Hard to believe that some call you a crutch
Nothing else comes close, of which I’m aware
Oh, sweet Elixir – you’re beyond compare!

EDIT: Ok, maybe that wasn’t helpful. Sorry.

Totally agree, I personally like white or green tea. The former having quite a mellow taste. I also like earl grey or lady grey without milk

Especially in the morning.......that first cup, and yes, agreed, that wonderful aroma.
