The Griffin is a new lightning cable. It is plugged into the genuine Apple power brick that came with the iPhone 5. It charges, but just gives me the warning every time I plug it in. Oh well.

Funny thing is that the same Griffin cable plugged into a 3rd party car charger doesn't give me the message. It only complains when it's plugged into the Apple brick. Weird. An Apple cable in the Apple brick doesn't complain so it's not the brick.

I know this might sound dumb but a lot of you guys talk about the Chinese brands being so "el cheapo" but the whole issue with apple chargers is that even if you take excellent care of them, they break in a matter of months. usually its the portion of the adapter that plugs into your phone. to me, even with the technology used to make the charger, not much attention is being given to the chargers durability. if i'm buying a 20 dollar charger, i want it to last more than three or four months. and this isn't only true with the 3gs, its EVERY iphone/ipad charger. that's too great a coincidence for apple to oversee, especially with how much time put into designing the product. it just seems intentional.

AH HAH! ;) Than you for confirming, something is going on. That notion pisses me off. I need to verify if the offending cables works with an Apple charger. Peripherals should not be something Apple is blocking if it's just for $19.70...

There are many cases on the web of lithium-ion batteries becoming safety problems because of their lack of a proper I2C controller.

I'm not sure if Apple is blocking the charge.

You can buy 3rd party charging accessories that are certified. In my experience I haven't had problems with certified accessories.

Even though some of the cheap accessories appear to be charging your devices, they charging quality isn't the same. I tested the power draw on cheap cables and it was a lot less than certified cables.

Its always best to use certified or Apple genuine, its not worth it to take the risk.

I've been using iPods since they were new and exciting, and their computers since the PowerBooks. I use them, travel with them, etc .. but I've never had one break. Not once..
