Okay i'm in a weird situation where I am looking for a place of my own (renting for now due to the economic climate). I found the PERFECT place not far from where I am now, stunning views from the decking at the back of the peak district, nice newly renovated 19th century stone cottage

BUT i'm put off by the fact it can only get 2mbps broadband. :(

Has the speed of internet in an area put you off getting a place? Strange times we live in :)

Right now I am happy as a clam with Virgin's 20mbps where I am… but I'd swop it in a flash if I could find a place like you just described.
:D
*sigh* A view of the Peak District is worth a few mbps.

Indeed, it is funny times we live in, because I would have never thought to check internet speeds before buying a home. I'd likely assume that internet available, and any reasonable internet speed is ok. For me, that's 512 mbps if the house is stunning, and maybe 1 or 2 mbps if the house and area isn't perfect. Australia always dd have low standards for this sort of thing, so no wonder I never thought to check. I think this thread actually taught me something about finding a home. ;)

We moved just before Christmas (from a house with 20MB Virgin Cable), and I always made sure we could get a decent broadband speed before even looking round the house.
In the end we were really lucky and found a converted farmhouse in the middle of the north Shropshire countryside and by some amazing luck our broadband speed is 7MB :D

What exactly are you guys doing that requires these massive MB/down lines? The only thing I can think of is if you were downloading 50 torrents of blue ray porn because surfing the web is nearly instantaneous even on a 1.5 down line.

You live alone, doncha?

I'm looking at a place in the Western Isles where if I'm lucky I might get 512kb ADSL (assuming the exchange is not at capacity already). There is no 3G coverage and only 2G when the wind is blowing in the right direction. That leaves satellite which gives up to 3mb...at a steep price.

But the view is great :D

Haha, welcome to the real world. It was only mid last year that 1.5mbps became available where i live. That said Tieri is 300kms beyond the black stump, so I guess it's still a surprise that it's connected at all.

Unless you're constantly pillaging music, TV and movies from the net, 2mbps should be enough for any man.

As I said earlier it isn't. On a good day we get 1.8mbps but if more than 2 people are on the internet then everything starts to lag, even web pages. Might as well stop browsing the internet if someone is on Youtube or Google Earth. Playing games online is impossible until gone midnight.
But you said man, which denotes a singlular user, so 2mbps is fine ;)

Seems like this thread is mostly talking about outside of the U.S., although I can say that connection speed is important to me.

I bought a townhome recently, and checked before buying what kind of speed I could get. Turns out I could get 20+ with Comcast, but opted for 12 with them, at least for a while. I downgraded to Qwest DSL, 7 MB and have been more or less happy.

Internet connection speeds have been important to me everywhere that I have lived. Back in the early 90's, I was one of the first households in the US to get cable broadband (San Diego) and haven't looked back since.

Blimey, that's pretty lucky. I'm about a mile from the center of the county town and struggle to get 2MB

I guess if you were sharing with 10 people or something you might need a 22 mb line :p

How big are your internet orgies!?

I had the world's slowest internet at one time. It was somewhat cheap, but with slow speeds and a low data cap, it wasn't worth it.

I actually got internet service from Everywhere Internet (that internet chain that mainly creates internet cafes in places like Sydney), and they gave me like 512 kbps speed, but unlimited internet usage. I used so much each month, but since it was so slow, it prevented me from using even more. ;)

+1

In this range I should be able to hit 6.4mb or so, but the problem is the quality of the copper between the town and my village. Without that being replaced, there's no hope for anything higher - and that's a very very common problem around the UK.

...Here's hoping 21CN will end up including VDSL2+, as it'll mean those in rural-ish areas will get some decent speeds despite crappy copper.

Well, I live just outside of a small town of about 10,000 people. You can get cable internet if you live within city limits. If not, you either get stuck with dial up, or an outrageously expensive line-of-sight wireless provider.:(

haha i live in a town of about 3,000 people, go 15minutes down the road and they can only get "half" dial-up. to save costs they split the copper lines, so much so that its pathetic and cannot even sustain ADSL1! my friend is happy to connect at 19000bps, or roughly 2.3kbps! poor kid no wonder why he is messed up :p he pays around $40 AUS a month, for 400mb.

you said 512mbps??, haha, pretty darn high speeds there.. does anywhere in the world have them?

worlds slowest internet? haha do tell. read my thingo above (^ ^) above and see if it compares :p

Yes, it has. A few years ago my dad wanted to rent a holiday home so the whole family could come together in one warm location. My first question was 'is there internet'? and 'how fast is it?' I don't live or die by it, but having a decent speed is important. I share a line with my wife - if she's on hulu or whatever, skyping, and updating her blog (which she tends to do all at the same time) and the line is lower than 5mbps, everything becomes super sluggish.

We're on a 10mbps optical line from qwest right now, but I'm thinking of dropping it for the faster cable lines. I recently changed to qwest, but that's another story! Let's just say, I hate qwest.

I make much of my income online, or at least doing things that involve highspeed access. Not required for work, but makes it a whole big honkin' heck of a lot nicer. I take that back.

So would I not buy a perfect if it didn't have broadband? Yup. I'd go somewhere else.

I lived in an apartment up till January 2006 that had Qwest DSL internet. It was way faster than Comcast high speed and I was very happy with it. When my mom died in January 2006, I had to move from there to the house that was my Mom's. I was sad to see that Qwest only had the 1.5MB service here. I moved a whole 11 miles and that made a difference in what Qwest had available. I eventually went back to Comcast simply because it was faster.

Now back in October, Qwest introduced the fiber optic cable in my area and I switched back to Qwest again and it is faster that Comcast once again.

Well the house outside isn't fantastic, but the inside is gorgeous, it's a stone cottage with real stone walls inside and original beams. The views are spectacular and it's only 15/20min drive to where i live now (my parents) and my friends etc. and i've close to a office for work.

Mostly i'll be working from home.

I use the O2 ADSL Line for Home working and my personal internet access (via my laptop) and the Virgin is shared over the house via wired gigabit ethernet. My brother and dad play games / ventrillo/teamspeak at the same time (on different games) so fast connections are a must in this house :)

What i might do is put up with the slow connection and vpn to home and download stuff there :)
