I'm installing it right now. It was a bit of a disappointment when they announced multitasking wasn't coming to the 3G, but unified inbox and folders are a big plus. It will tide me over until I get my iPhone 4 on Thursday. If I wasn't planning on getting a new iPhone soon, I'd definitely be more disappointed. But with only 128MB of RAM, it makes sense why some things aren't coming to the 3G. I'd rather spend the money on a device that will run the cool new features well.

Mine seems to be faster too. I wish they could at least the put the rotation lock/ipod control panel for the 3g and the wallpaper thing is kind of a bummer. The folder are pretty handy along with the geolocation map for the photos.
I don't feel cheated or obligated to get the iP4 (I did) simply because I want them to keep pushing the software forward and the 3G is old hat now.

Not a fizzer at all. And this talk of it being "slower" is more BS.

It is still light years away from having the features of Android but its a monster step up and glad I did it despite the hour it took.

I can't even imagine having the full iOS4 on my 3G. It probably wouldn't even have enough power to slide to unlock....

Well, we're seeing all kinds of conflicting reports. Some say that their 3G's are now faster, some are saying that they're slower. It is a mess for now. I'm gonna wait for a while to see which side prevails. :)

iOS4 does not feel slower on 3G than 3.1.2. iBooks app is the only thing which is slow on 3G after the update, pretty much unusable. My advice is to stick with kindle and stanza as book readers.

I've had the GM for about 2 weeks now and at first everything seemed snappy, but over time it gets slower and slower. You'll start to notice when you go to write an SMS and the letters cant keep up with your taps. And you have to wait for about 4 seconds after you hit send to see it even do anything...

I stopped the first backup and did as people said in another thread. I tried to restore. Things went even worse. I got the apple screen of death for half an hour and then hard reset the phone. It came on eventually, thankfully the phone is working. I will not be going ahead with restoring or updating any more. I will wait until I get my new Iphone 4 to experience the new features. Or I will buy an android phone...

I actually saw improvement, performance wise. OS 3 was a painful experience. 4 actually seems a bit better. Only using it until I get my hands on an iPhone 4 though.

I have the keyboard freeze up on me everyday anyway, I just keep typing after the freeze and it catches up eventually. It only has to last me either 2 days or 3 weeks.

os4 actually sped up my 3G so I'm liking it so far... although I won't be using it in three days.. :D

Agreed. Mine is MUCH faster and smoother in operation after the upgrade. Will be a nice way to spend our last few days together <sniffle sniffle>. I like the mail already.

+1. I can vouch for that "slower and slower over time" behavior, particularly in SMS. My fiancé had the 4.0 GM seed on her 3G S (snappy as hell), and then experienced the utter fail that my 3G was (with the seed) stating "Wtf is wrong with your SMS app?"

Ios 4 on 3G: snappy as a comatose grandma.

Well for now anyway my 3G feels snappier and much smoother. Really likeing the mailbox and folders. I'm treating this as a sneak peek as to what my new iPhone will be this Thursday.

Not a disappointment at all - given you are aware of what you do/don't get with the 3G.

1. No Multitasking - This is kind of obvious given only 128MB of RAM in the 3G compared with 256/512 in the 3Gs/4.
2. Folders - Yup, just great, thanks!
3. Unified inbox - Exactly as the doctor ordered.
4. No home screen wallpaper - Bummer, but again, not enough RAM so I'd prefer to skip it.

Overall I'm happy, but yes this does point out the raw hardware differences between 3G/3Gs/4 and just how much Apple has been able to "squeeze water from a rock" over time. So the 3G users are pretty much dry of any water, so be it...that's the way Moore's Law works in technology as a general principle.

Oh, and yes it's "snappier" for me, but I didn't restore, rather rebuild my environment from ground zero. Takes some time, but in the long run it's worth it every year or so...

Upgraded my girls' 3G and I have to say it is MUCH slower since the update. Can't say the same for my 3GS :D

YES, absolute fizzer. No wallpaper, no multitasking (although the last one I did already know about). I gave up my Paramore themed iPhone to relock and upgrade to this. 3 hours of nothing but WASTED TIME - really pissed off.

I also rebuild from ground zero. Every update that comes out gets installed with the phone in DFU mode. Then maybe I'll restore from backup if I feel confident that there won't be problems.

4.0 got installed in DFU mode but I didn't restore any 3rd party data. No 3rd party apps installed & all I added was my MobileMe account (to pull over contacts, bookmarks). After running the GM since June 7th (no reboots) and not doing much of anything other than web browsing and SMS, it's an absolute slug. It's as if there's a slight memory leak since the performance degradation happens over time. Maybe an issue with the GM seed that was quietly fixed in the released build. Too early to tell; I'll know after running the release build for a week or so. ;)

3G issues will be moot soon as they are phased out and replaced with 3G S or iPhone 4.

Mine is incredibly laggy. Scrolling pages is very laggy, sometimes non-responsive.

Loading my Favourites (double-tap Home) takes 3-4 seconds to appear!

Took 9 seconds to load Messages. 4 seconds to load Mail.

Facebook refuses to load. I really wish I hadn't installed this. It really has killed my 3G. I'm getting the iPhone 4 in a month, but this is just taking the piss.
