The feature is built into OS X for screen sharing. I don't think iOS has it native. I suppose you can buy an app that can do the same thing on the iPad but now you're spending money and trying to use touch screen to control a interface not meant to be controlled by touch. Windows 10 might be easier because of it's touch based design.

I still wouldn't want the iPad even if I bought the app for it. The point of a iPad in my option to use it while standing and taking notes. The value IMO is lost when I'm sitting on the couch struggling with the interface. I'll take the rMBP any day.

It still only does split screen. I haven't tried it but I'm not interested in having to deal with not being able to have one email open and editing another at the same time or being able to have finder open and drag in an attachment without having to jump through all the hoops.
So because you would have to possibly buy a $2 app for remoting for your iPad, you are willing to spend an extra $60 or more on another machine? Ok. That makes sense.. Kinda

I think there are people that just shouldn't have iPads. Like...it's just not a product for them. But they struggle with it mentally because even though they don't want it, in the back of their minds they still think it's kinda cool (even though it's not for them) And I think with where consumerism these days, people have a hard time with the idea that a product isn't for them. You see that with the launch of the Apple Watch. Countless people would go online and angrily share their opinions about how Apple is a failure because they made a product that so and so person doesn't want. And it's weird to think about...a company...is a failure because they made a product that I don't want to use. That's not for me. As if ALL their products have to be made with ME in mind. Some people just don't like watches. For those people, the Apple Watch was a nonstarter from the get go. Then why do those same people talk about how Apple failed because they didn't make them want to buy a watch? They didn't want a watch in the first place!

So when I see these people on here and all over the freaking place complain about how the iPad isn't for them or that it's a toy or just...whatever, it's the same thing but focused on a different product. The iPad isn't for you. For whatever personal reason: maybe you grew up on laptops and the way you interface with a machine is a big deal for you. Maybe you like an always on keyboard and a trackpad. Or maybe even if you don't use it all the time, you need USB ports. Or maybe you need access to a file system or something. From the get go, the iPad was a nonstarter for you because iOS is a paradigm shifting thing. It's a different way of interacting with a device. It's primary method of interaction is touch, file systems are the "old way" of doing things as these days people are used to just opening up the app they want to use and then opening their file and a lot of people just don't require specific desktop software anymore. And if they do for a certain purpose, they might be able to workaround it or adjust their workflow. Or remote into a desktop for specific limited purposes but the rest of the time their iPad does everything else.

I watch my 11 year old daughter and how she interfaces with technology closely...I don't think this will be a hotly debated topic when her generation is older. I think they will be used to a certain way of doing things and by then, limitations of iOS will be a lot less anyway. These conversations almost make me nostalgic thinking back to when laserdisc was debated, when iPod was just becoming a thing and when mobile devices started taking over from 2007 onward. It'll be interesting someday when I'm an old man and to look back on conversations like these knowing what will be the current state of technology 30 years from now.

Those who find an iPad a terrific laptop replacement didn't need the laptop to begin with.

Completely agree with this. Marking up a PDF or typing a document is very different than editing a movie, working on a 32 track song, or processing a raw photo into a finished product.

Now, IF the iPad could someday handle these and other heavier tasks, it could potentially replace my laptop. But, they would also have to (in my opinion) add some ports to the device to allow uploading and downloading to external drives, allow direct access to the file system, increase onboard memory to about 512 GB and allow mouse control. The "cloud" is not a complete solution for storage. It is not always possible or practical to upload/download from cloud storage on the go.

To me, the definition of "laptop replacement" is when I no longer have to own a laptop. Just being able to do something my laptop does isn't a replacement. Doing everything it does is.

No, not even close. At home I use it in bed for youtube/surfing and only because I am too lazy to get the laptop. My iPad is only good for traveling and only because my MBP is sizeable and heavy.

I use my rMB for one thing and one thing only, OOTP.

Everything else is done on my IPP. I also have a 27inch Mac that is being neglected that we bought about 3 years ago but no one wants to buy that thing now so it is more a piece of art in my office versus ever getting much use.

Lots of truth to this.

When the iPad was announced I thought it was the dumbest thing ever - just a giant iPod Touch. I just didn't think I'd ever want/need/use one and I thought the product would flop. I was looking at it from only my perspective. I got an iPad 3 mainly to replace my books I lost in a flood. I was going to go with a Kindle but since I since my iPhone and MBP had a nice ecosystem going, I decided to get an iPad to also use as a digital photo album (the flood prompted me to scan all my photos). Over time I realized just how little I NEEDED a laptop.

I still needed a computer, but I didn't need the portability of a laptop. When my wife and I decided to switch from PCs to Apple, we decided on laptops literally use them on our laps. Over time my iPad was what I used on my lap with my MBP staying on my desk as a media server and occasional document creator or video editor.

When the Apple watch was announced, I had a different attitude. Like the first iPad, I thought it was another device I didn't need or want. I've never been one to wear watches and when I did I destroyed them. But I had learned that because it was not for me, it would not be a flop.

I don't understand the animosity in some of the "iPad as a computer replacement" debates. Some can do it and some can't. That simple.

Yes it has. My laptop acts as an iTunes server for my Apple TVs, and I use Quicken on it. I also update my gadget's firmware with it (radar detector, GPS, etc.). That's about it. The rest I do on my iPad, which is email, web browsing, MS Office, and some work apps.

From the first time I picked up my original iPad, my laptops have been pretty much forgotten.

That's the glimmer of truth here. Most people just grasp onto whatever justifications they can to use as an excuse, when the truth is they just prefer the desktop OS. There's nothing wrong with that, people just need to quit trying to pretend like there are objective reasons for it. There can be, but they are the exception, not the rule.

In this thread, there are people talking about Lightroom or Final Cut Pro. The people that need programs like that are the exception, by far. These needs are valid for them, but they aren't helpful for most people.

That's what Steve Jobs meant by cars vs trucks. There will always be people who need trucks (FCP, whatever), but most won't. There will also be people, presumably like yourself, who don't need a truck, but prefer them anyway. That's cool, but it's not because of anything objective as it is with the people who actually need it.

The value is enhanced when you're sitting on the couch and can deal directly with the content without requiring a keyboard and trackpad.

See what I mean? Honestly who struggles with the iOS interface anyway? There are edge cases, sure, but the only people who struggle with either UI are those that have difficulty trying or learning new things.

The exact same thing happened 30 years ago when CLI curmudgeons belittled the WIMP GUI as a toy, unsuitable for "real work".

What amazes me are all the people who don't even have iPads, posting in an iPad forum. What's the motivation here? To tell everyone else they are wrong? I don't mean you in particular, just that the proportion of people who dislike iPads, yet go out of their way to talk about them, seems rather odd.

The opposite for me as well. Since replacing my iMac with a rMBP I rarely touch my iPad Mini. I just find it easier to do things on the MacBook.

Again it is my opinion. My opinion is not wrong. My opinion is my own. You disagree fine. You are not going to change my opinion.

Is your world going to implode if someone dares to disagree with you?

Everyone is focusing on the remote desktop and ignored all of my other points. It's convenient for your argument and aggravating because it's like talking to a PR person bent on twisting things around instead of listening.

If I want to send a email on OS X I can have several drafts open at the same time. If I want to attach a file like a picture I can attach it and just type. Unlike the iPad where you have to go to photos and then attach the image and type the message from there. Things like that where the programs hop between each other is cumbersome and unintuitive.

Thanks again for putting words into my mouth for you all to latch onto like I said it. Where did I call a iPad a toy? Can you stick to actual facts instead of reacting irrational and emotional?

This topic asked for peoples opinions. I'm not jumping down the throats of people who like the iPads. Why do you have to force your opinion like it is fact? Maybe I don't want to sit on a couch seat in what I feel is an unnatural position with my feet up. I'd rather my machine adapt around me instead me adapting around it.

I think it's statements like this that's getting people to react negatively. What you call an unnatural sitting position is perfectly natural and comfortable to me. For me, it's the iPad that feels natural, and the laptop that I feel like I have to adapt to. Somehow, you placing "I feel" in front of "unnatural" doesn't quite mitigate the impression that you think that sitting your way is the natural way and everyone who sits differently is doing it wrong.

Also, I was the one who mentioned sitting with my knees up, but you bring it up in response to a post by a different poster. I don't think that poster was putting words in your mouth, just making general statements about things they've noticed from various posts they've seen in this forum. They even qualified that statement with "I don't mean you in particular."

Again with the ignoring of all points based in fact instead of opinion.

The operative words "I feel" and "I'd rather" indicate that the following statements are my opinion. They don't negate the other person's opinion. Both the statement about liking to sit on the couch and use the iPad and my statement about liking the MacBook are valid for the people expressing the opinion.

So what you are saying is that since I don't express the same opinion as you it generates a negative feeling and you lash out.

It's the way you express your opinions. You could just have said "I don't like sitting with my knees up," but you had to go and call it "unnatural."

I can count on two hands the number of times I've used my macbook ever since I purchased my first iPad 5 years ago

I don't even know why I hang on to the macbook

So now you want to dictate to me how I should talk to you. My opinion is only valid enough to walk on egg shells around you?

I can't give reasons for my opinion? I should just say it's stupid and I don't like it without elaborating?

Now also make sure you take my statement that was expressing my opinion of the position and frame it in the guise of I was stating it like a fact. You just keep twisting things around.

So now again you cherry pick one thing ignore everything else and then say it's just the way I express myself.

I'm done talking to you. You are an obvious troll.

Yeah I agree with you on him nitpicking the way you talk. It's pretty obvious you were just expressing an opinion and not trying to be overbearing or making statements of fact that would apply to everybody. It's cool bro.

If you wanted to send an email in iOS mail, you could do the same thing. Just start writing an email, tap in the text field and click "insert a picture or video" and attach something. Same for drafts. It's probably been awhile since you've used iOS, but now you can simply pull the message you're typing down and your draft is out of the way saved in the background for later. Just FYI.

When it comes to this or any other forum, a statement is either one of two things...

Fact or opinion.

Trouble arises the people mistake one for the other.

Thanks :D

iPads and iPods and iPhones can be great teaching aids for children. I've seen my cousin's kids using them and it is amazing. The interactivity is holding their attention and teaching them valuable skills as well as real world knowledge at a staggering pace. iOS devices are excellent machines. Thats just one of the use cases.

I love my iPhone 6+. It gives me access to my email, navigation and web browsing on the go. It's an invaluable tool.

In the field though I sit at desks coding systems. My devices need to be portable enough for me to relocate them but I don't need them to be quite as mobile as an iPad. Like I said that is just me. I see QA people using iPads all the time but it is because they are simply pushing buttons and bouncing around from one station to another where it would take too long to pack up a laptop , move to the station and then unpack.

The iPad is a much more useful tool then the Android Tablet in my opinion because of the quality of the OS as compared to Android. If I needed a tablet it would for sure be another iPad. One day my needs might change. But in answer to the question posed in the topic, my use of my MacBook has not been nulled because of the iPad. :D

Is that a new feature? I didn't know that this was possible. Thank you! That is seriously awesome because I can't even begin to express how aggravating it was to have my email all typed out only to realize I have to do the email another way in order to send it with a picture attached.

I haven't used an iPad in a couple of years. I have my iPhone which I use a lot as an auxiliary device. This improves my work flow for taking pictures of job sites and being able to attach them in what is a more natural flow of thought then going backwards the way it was before. :D

I think it was added in iOS 8 or 9, I can't remember which. You can add pictures and videos in your camera roll this way, and files stored in cloud services. I don't think you can directly attach files that are stored in individual apps, though. They have to be saved in the cloud somewhere first.

New ish I guess. It was introduced in iOS 8 along with a bunch of other cool features like continuity and handoff. I also like the ability to manage drafts by just pulling them down. Here it is in action

And if you haven't gotten caught up, check out some videos on YouTube showing what's been updated in the past couple iOS versions. iOS 9 was big for iPad. Here's a lil video showing what came in iOS 9

You're a her? Why didn't you tell me sooner?! I've been calling you "man" for like the past year on these forums. Jesus...man ;-)

My only devices now are my iPad Pro, iPhone, and a PC gaming desktop that functions basically as a Steam machine. I sold my laptop when I got the iPad Pro because I knew I wouldn't use it.

It seems some people frown upon non-complex computer users like myself. It does everything I need, and with the FileBrowser app it pretty much replaces my laptop completely. I think it could replace a laptop for most users.
