The $2600 is stupidly expensive - and I *hate* the price increase for the dGPU. But I gotta say - it sounds like everyone agrees that the $2600 model is truly a completely no-compromise laptop: thin, light, amazing screen, best track-pad, awesome performance, fast CPU and good GPU, blazing fast SSD, awesome new OS. Really, there's no disappointments except, well, that pricetag.

Totally agree Mattcube. I was planning on getting the base 15 straight out of the gate. But without the dedicated GPU, I'm on the fence. If I was to get the base 15, I think I would rather just get last years model (with dedicated gpu). Luckily I can buy from the government store so the top of the line 15 is $2,399. Which is still expensive but pretty much future proof for the next 5+ years.

Arstechnica has had the best review thus far going over my worries with the update/downgrade on the 15" base model.

If someone would come out with an thunderbolt external gpu, I'd buy the base 15 in a heart beat. But I don't think that is going to happen anytime soon

Now how do I tell the wife I'm buying a $2,400 mac?....

Hint: "Hey honey, guess what--I just saved $200 on a new Mac today!!"

My current dilemma makes even less sense: deciding between the 2.3GHz or "cat's ass" 2.6GHz CPU. An extra $180 for very little gain, and yet... I'm the lucky beneficiary of the "friends and family" discount this time around so I'm sorely tempted to just go for broke. Literally. ;)

Not bothered with the "Price Increase". I was always going to be paying the price I paid. $1999 for the computer, which used to be $2199. $300 for the 512, $200 for the maxed out Ram, both of which I was always going to be doing. So I paid $2599 when I thought I was going to be paying $2699. Minus the $200 student discount I paid $2399. I'm ok with this.

I just unboxed my new rmbp base 1499,- model :D

nice man. yea post up the video when you're done.

one thing i can tell right away is: the rmbp is much bulkier than the mba
its not heavy at all, but you can tell the 250g difference.
both just feel great. i haven't really run anything demanding so far, but the responsivity is just fantastic.
writing on the rmbp haswell is a pleasure. :D

yea i'm coming from an 11" Air, and i have to get used to carrying around a MBP again after years of not having one. it's def much lighter than my old 1st gen unibody MBP tho :)

I notice that I got 7.8gb memory used just while browsing safari (7 tabs).
Is that normal?
I was kinda shaky about getting the 8gb/4gb only version for the rmbp/mba, but I got them on a great deal.
Also I read in reviews that nobody ever seems to notice any difference when upgrading ram.

i only use Chrome, but right now i have 7 tabs open, Spotify playing, Calendar open, Garageband open, and Xcode installing - my memory use is hovering around 4.2GB right now (my specs are on my sig below).

funny thing is.. and i assume this is the new memory efficiency feature in Mavericks at work - is that when i open more apps.. my RAM usage actually goes down a bit.. for example.. i started off with just Chrome with memory use at 4.7GB - opened Spotify (memory use at 4.4) - opened up Calendar (memory use at 4.3) - opened up Xcode (memory at 4.2) - opened up Garageband (memory still at 4.2)

Not a review but benchmarking for the ssd (which is a samsung btw):

Questions

Hi this might sound stupid but i have few questions,

1. The new spec of the macbook pro 15” is 2.0 GHz i7, I found it confusing since isn’t that means a downgrade from my macbook pro 2010 model that has 2.66 Ghz i7?

2. Actually what is the need to have 2 graphic cards? My current macbook pro (2010 model) has 2 graphic cards, and the discrete one (NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M) currently always giving me a problem when I open graphic driven apps like photoshop, indesign, etc. Just wondering if I only have only the integrated graphic card, is it actually going to be better or slower for me to do graphic driven stuffs?

I’m running OS X Mountain Lion, and recently I always get GPU kernel panic every time I run graphic driven apps. Brought it to apple service centre in my town and they said that my logic board is spoilt, repairing can cost me a brand new macbook pro, so I’m considering on getting the new retina macs. But I’m totally confused about the specs since first it runs 2.0 Ghz, and it only has one graphic card (15” model the lower spec, the higher one is kinda too expensive for me :/)

Would be really helpful if you guys can help me out in explaining my questions! Thank you so much! :)

How long does it take for Anandtech to review a MBP after launch? I'm still waiting for the Anandtech review before making a buying decision.

Advancements in CPU tech will make this difference insignificant for the everyday user. For you I wouldn't worry.

One super fast graphics card that gets awaken when there is a graphically demanding app open. One slow, but super power friendly graphics card that is used for 98% of tasks and keeps your battery lasting longer.

On the new rMBP there is an Intel Iris Pro GPU which is faster than the nVidia 330m in your current laptop.

Tried to easily explain the differences for you in bold without getting technical.

The Haswell CPU is faster clock for clock. The 2.3 ghz haswell CPU is about 70% faster in single core task than my 2.4 ghz i5 2010 MBP for example.

If the 330m is giving you kernel panics, try reinstalling OS X. Or perhaps your 330m is broken? I'm not having any issues with my 330m.

"To see if this results in a performance hit, we ran GeekBench 3 64-bit, which returned a single-core score of 2,946 and a multi-core score of 6,301. This does represent a slight backwards step, as the previous Pro 13 with Retina could manage single-core and multi-core scores of 3,136 and 6,661, respectively. That’s a decrease of almost 10 percent.

We can’t say this felt noticeable in real-world use "

The only thing that was interesting in there was a mention of the crushed black levels.

They obviously don't have any clue on benchmarking - or maths for that matter - the CPU performance difference being closer to -5% and expecting this to have *ANY* real world impact, makes the rest of the reviewers opinions rather suspect. Hope that the Anand & Ars reviews of the rMBP13 turn up soon (in any case a bit late - my rMBP turns up on Monday)
