I've had my 15" MBP for a little under a week now, and can honestly say the glossy display hasn't bothered me in the slightest and it is, IMO a far better display than I had on my previous 1st Gen matte MBP. Yes, when the power is off it is very reflective but in use it simply isn't an issue (at least not for me). I've used it in a wide variety of locations and lighting and it looks simply stunning in all of them.

Of course the new MBP is brighter than the old MBP. The new LED backlit screens are brighter than the CCFL backlight technology, and when comparing new with old, the new MBP hasn't suffered from at least 3 years of fading!! I'd expect nothing less than what you described. ;)

I'm typing this outside on a white MacBook with a glossy display that isn't as glossy as the unibody MBP or MBs. I can clearly see the sky and it's horrible, but if I tilt the screen lower, I can only see my silhouette (no horrible reflection here, text is clear), the building behind me (somewhat bad, but text is still visible), and a part of the sky (not very visible, but can see things if I really really try). And again, this is on a screen that's less glossy. The only problem is that the screen is a tiny bit low and I need to hunch down a bit, but it's doable.

I think I can survive with a glossy screen. However, I don't think I'd want to if I had an option. ;)

And again......buy the matte film.

I said look, not feel. I agree that the construction of the new MacBooks is pretty much second to none, but they are absolutely hideous to look at when open. The black plastic is a big mistake in my opinion, and it is a real shame because it could easily have been silver to match the rest of the computer.

As the following two images will illustrate, they are really pretty similar to a very, very old Toshiba model in appearance.

Ditto for some Vaios & Pavilions

The entire line of Apple notebooks now looks exactly like other manufacturers. Apple sacrificed their unique look with the new models. Whether you get the glossy screen or not isn't going to make it look any less like a Toshiba with that hideous black keyboard on a silver body.

I don't really think that it was the matte screen that set Apple's computers apart in the past - plenty of other manufacturers (especially in the same price bracket as MacBook Pro) use them too.

what notebook do u prefer?

I didn't say brighter, I said better as in everything about the screen is better, and not just due to it being a new screen. Personally, I think the new glass screens are superb and simply don't see any problem at all with using it in any lighting conditions so far (including the dreaded fluorescent office scenario).

<sigh> And that's just your opinion. Personally I couldn't disagree more.

I've owned the old and the new style Macbook and Macbook Pro (Powerbook) and the old one looks hideous to me. Down to taste at the end of the day.

I'd go along with that. Even when new, my old Powerbook and Macbook Pro used to be barely visible in some situations.

While I didn't get a reflection from the screen like you do with the glossy ones, I did get a diffused glare that would wash out the whole screen. Couldn't stare at it for long periods. The new screens suit me fine.

Do you guys understand that design is not only about colors? It's just a small part of the overall thing. I hope many of you aren't designer themselves.

Beside, there's not a hundreds colors that you can make a computer off. If you want to appeal to a greater public, there's only white, grey and black that can be easily used.

Yep, used individually they can look great (just look at the last generation of MacBooks or MacBook Pros) but when you start mixing them I think it looks hideous.

The way the new MacBooks are built is great, I own one partly for that reason, but I simply don't understand why they didn't make the edge of the screen, the hinge and the keyboard silver. It would have looked much tidier and much more elegant. As it stands, I think the black 'acccents' look garish.

I would prefer an overall silver look as well
oh well I hope to keep this macbook pro for the next 3 years
and plan to upgrade to 4GB soon

Honestly, I don't even know how you can compare the new MB to those other POS's.

Arguing something as subjective as looks is fruitless, but silver accents? Please don't ever be an interior designer. :)

If you've already bought a unibody MBP, I would say it's cheaper or at least the same price to get a matte screen installed through one of those online services. Restocking fee's are a bish.

am i the only one who thinks the speakers are hideous in the new unibody construction. And that black keyboard takes so much presence...cmon' apple wheres the all silver!
