Tim is not a interesting person. The magic Steve had with users and the public is sorely missing.

If Apple could somehow work Jony Ive into events as the lead presenter, it would change perception quickly.

Honestly, I don't know what their waiting for. All of us would prefer to hear Jony over Tim.

Like Steve said... Jony can do whatever he wants. If Steve had that much faith in him, let's hear from the man Steve loved so much.

Just a though Apple...

Apart from the fact that Ive hates public speaking which is why he's never once in the history of Apple done even a segment at a keynote... Did you consider that?

Apple's been "on the decline" ever since the 90s and everybody and their mom was saying "Apple is dead back" in those days... Well, we saw how that turned out.
And people are still saying that now and sing the hymn of how Android will abolish Apple. I am sure this time it will really, really, REALLY happen... yea.

Also, given Steve Jobs' past experience with executives I can see why he was throwing fits on the first day he was back.

To the critics who say Apple hasn't released any new, innovative product since the iPad debut, what do you call the Mac Pro? That was just released. It's a total reimagining of that class of computer. I guess if it's not a mass consumer product then it doesn't count. For those people just sit tight. 2014 should get your attention.

Record profits = company in decline?

Ok, gotcha, you're try to sell your failure of a book by making bold, sensationalistic headlines.

Clm

This book will be major claim chowder in a year once Apple launches a new product category. Her writing career in tech space will be over, sans perhaps for CNET.

I very much agree with this. Cook has no showmanship. The most exciting part of the apple events are the mini videos with Ive.

Didn't Steve also leave a Master 10 Year plan to be followed after his passing?

Without Steve we don't have the same enthusiastic keynotes, which were a big part of Apple to begin with. Just the loss of that alone for me is a big one. And it'll never be the same. So even if he left a master plan, that still doesn't make up for the loss the company suffered.

fanboy rave

Before Touch ID came out, the idea that touch sensors could be miniaturized to fit the little home button was laughable. Apple delivered.

Where are the car integration platforms from Google and Microsoft? Apple delivered.

The first devices in history to have "ac" Wi-Fi? Apple delivered.

An incredible (and risky) concept for the new Mac Pro. The entire thing is a wind tunnel. It's pure premium art. And it's cheaper than the competition. Apple delivered.

Fantastic new re-imagining of iOS. It's not perfect (yet), but it's a bold step in the right direction. Apple delivered.

Ditto for OS X. Apple delivered.

Bold new pricing strategy for iWork and OS X. Apple delivered.

All of this happened under Cook.

------------------------------------------

The e-books pricing case wasn't Cook's fault.

When they made fun of green felt, it was Apple making fun of itself, not necessarily of Scott Forstall. It was only Craig Fed. doing it. Maybe it wasn't a pre-planned group pile-on. Maybe it was just Craig being Craig.

------------------------------------------

The following are fair criticisms of Cook:

Siri and Maps haven't been completely fixed yet.

Scott Forstall shouldn't have been fired. Instead, they should have given him an independent project where he didn't have to run into Ive and others he didn't get along with.

Josh Browett. The ex-retail chief. That was completely on Cook.

Overall, I give Cook a B+. After 2014, he'll have earned his A+.
What grade does he get for 2015?

"Scott Forstall shouldn't have been fired. Instead, they should have given him an independent project where he didn't have to run into Ive and others he didn't get along with. "

Scott Forstall cost Apple $21 Million under his iOS6 direction using what he was adamant was a public domain clock but was a registered design belonging to the Swiss Railway since 1944.

Since Jobs died Apple has lost it's spark. I use to get so excited when they released a new product, but these days the feelings aren't there. Apple just feels like another company now.

In the last 4-5 years Apple HAS declined when compared to their competitors. While I can never imagine using an Android, PC, or Windows 8 as my primary technology, most of the world does. Apple's move towards proprietary pinned Flash and soldered RAM on their extremely expensive Mac lineup is an example of how you lose more customers than you pickup. The retina screen was awesome the first year it was released. Now, Apple's competitors have caught and surpassed them, with much less expensive systems.

iWatch? At this point, it looks like they are copying samsungs Idea :) (even though I realize they are not, it still looks that way) You can't watch others do something and then take additional years to release your products. Technology doesn't work that way.

I think Apple may do a few things Steve wouldn't have done and that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Jobs presided over nonsense like the toilet seat iBook, Flower Power iMac and the Cube vanity project as well as the amazing successes.

Apple would have to employ and absolutely insane board to end up as just another stodgy tech company churning out drab products.

One thing that doe make me nervous is how Apple rapidly focused on the iPod and then iPhone - markets that are incredibly fickle. The mp3 player market is virtually gone and the phone market faddy and fickle.

Apple hit a high water mark when they had industry-beating products like Final Cut, Logic, Aperture running on the world's best OS - the perception, and to an extent the reality, is that they've let that slide.

The day someone makes products that are superior to
and more innovative than Apple's we can have this conversation.

Until then, I simply do not see the decline.

I wonder how many companies out there would like to be as doomed as apple is.

Also, why are the likes of samedung trying to copy a doomed company?

I for one would like to be as doomed as apple.

While I do agree that this Book and especially it's conclusions are at least questionable, you maybe were so infuriated by it, that you went a little over board with your statements. Just a quick reality check on a couple:

Nope, been done before. For example was my office dore fitted with a new "lock" end of 2012: http://www.technikneuheiten.com/turklinke-2-0-grabit-smart-vergleicht-die-fingerabdrucke-in-der-turklinke/ (Sorry, only have a German link to this)

Well, wrong again. Airport Extreme released June 10, 2013, Netgear R6300 Released May 2012(!) and even the Samsung S4 (and this realy hurts to say) was released with "ac" April 27, 2013.

YMMV, but to me iOS 7 is, well, a color theme with some minor tweaks but not a re-imagination. Functionality did not realy change, did it?

Same as above. What is re-imagined in OSX? To me it's a simple update to the existing Product nothing new that is a game changer...

Just to make this clear, I am not trying to say that Apple does not do a great Job at enhancing their Products. But neither do I feel the urge to say Apple is perfect and probably invented electricity as well as the sunlight just to dismiss some silly "Apple is dooooooomed"(tm) Book.

Apple delivered enough in the past to be where it is now, and probably will continue to do so in the near future.

That lock doesn't even exist, its was a concept, how does vapourware even compare to any shipping product?

Do fingerprint locks exist? YES, how many were using capacitive sensors? none. How easy is it to defeat an optical system? incredibly easy. A simple photocopied fingerprint can defeat a laptop sensor.

So what I've gathered from this thread is that the Author of the book is not entitled to her opinion or hypothesis and to have it published. Everyone here could pitch a book about Apple, do their own research and hypothesizing (some already have in great detail over the years) and get a book deal. Then we can call debate whether or not your opinion matters.

The author of this article on MR was right - the book is not going to make Apple fans very happy. And I am sure it will be received poorly on Amazon and other online places that accept user reviews who will condemn her to other worlds for even daring to write a bad word.

I do wonder how many books she'll sell simply because people want to intentionally enrage themselves now that they know that it's not a book they would enjoy reading.

Apple is in a decline.

iOS 7 has been the buggiest iOS that has ever been released in iOS history.

The new iWork is a downgrade compared to iWork '09

Touch ID, for some, only works half the time.

iPhone 4 with iOS 7 is so slow, animations lag. (With enough attention to detail, iOS 7 could be further engineered to be way smoother on iPhone 4).

And that's only some of the problems Apple is having.

There's been fingerprint sensors on phones before the 5S

This is form over function. Nobody cares if your tower is smaller or thinner, it sits there and you never move it anyway.

Furthermore, you can build your own computer for a much, much cheaper price.

Scott Forstall was the guy who knew how iOS is made, and yet Apple fired him. iOS 7 is the result.

I'd rather pay for quality software than pay nothing for a downgrade.

Sure, Apple is still strong and probably still the best, but in comparison to what Apple would've been if Steve were alive, I'd prefer the latter.
Wake up! iOS 7.1 is here
