Hi im new here just today as i want to know if the hauppauge hd pvr will work on my brand new macbook pro new model 1 month old. or is it windows only the hd pvr or will it go straight on the mac.

this one http://www.hauppauge.co.uk/site/products/data_hdpvr.html

thanks freddie

if you have a program called eyeTV then you can use the hauppauge..

OR.. you can download a free program called HDPVRCAPTURE..

and yes it will work with a bran new macbook.

Ok im going to buy a HD PVR.. just to be sure..

i have:

2GHz intel core 2 duo
4GB memory
128Mb VRAM ATI Radeon 2400 HD

i dont mind if its a little choppy but when i upload content to youtube i really dont want it to be.. i can watch videos in 720p without a problem on my computer btw.

I want to bump this up for a moment instead of asking this in another thread.

I see a lot of claims that you can record HDTV on these sites but if you pull teeth you find out it's over the air HDTV. Sure I want to record ABC, Fox etc... but what about ESPN HD, FX HD, USA HD? No where have I found anyone say that those HD channels are available and you can record them as well.

All I see so far is that I could record a show off FX HD onto my cable company's HD-DVR, then play it back through a PVR box and into my computer over USB.

I've been 4 days at this and it's all starting to get really overwhelming.

Thanks!

help recording?

I realize this is an older thread, but i thought it couldnt hurt to post here. I just purchased a Hauppage HDPVR1212. For the most part it seems to be working well, though i haven't put it through the courses yet. Once immediate problem im having, i was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on.

I am using the system to record game play from my PS3. Some games record just fine... others i don't get anything. My software says nothing is being picked up and it just records black. Is this a frame rate problem? I know some games play at 30fps and others 60fps. Or is it a component out issue? Do i need to change output settings? Its very frustrating because a) it was expensive and b) i bought it primarily to record game play. If i can't do that then i've wasted the money.

Any thought or troubleshooting tips would be appreciated.

What application are you using to record with? Using HDPVRCapture I haven't seen this problem myself. The HDPVR doesn't record 1080p, so this maybe the issue when you try to record one of your games. PS3 games use 720p or 1080p, so go into your display settings and unselect 1080p I'd you want to record and that should solve the black screen issue

try using elgato :D

This is probably because your trying to record a game running at 1080p. The HDPVR can only take up to 720p or 1080i. Most PS3 games still run at 720p so that's why this black screen only happens sometimes.

Go to your settings and uncheck the 1080p option, and your problem should be solved

Hi i just brought my Hauppauge HD-PVR. i understand there is 2 choice of software. Eyetv and hdpvrcature. I have decided to get a eyetv software but it cost 80pounds just to DL it off the web and i found Elgato EyeTV DTT 2008 which cost less and has the software inside too. Can any1 confirm this with me? Bcoz im trying to find the cheapest way to get eyetv 3 software

Just make sure it's eye tv version 3 that comes with it.

I struggled to get eye tv to work properly with the HDPVR. You are definitely better off spending the money on hdvrcapture IMO.

Sagetv might also support the HD PVR hooked directly to a Mac.

I have using 2 HD PVRs and several other HD capture devices on Windows however SageTV also has a Mac server and client.

Just trying to help.

HDPVR Capture

Can anyone tell me in what frame rate HD PVR Capture records? Is it possible to adjust the frame rate? I have a brand new Hauppauge in the box and an HD PVR Capture software ready to go but haven't got started yet.

Also, HD PVR Capture users, can you recommend video settings for recording the best possible picture?

1080i - 13568 kbps
720p - 8014 kbps

These are the best quality settings IMO
Any more than this and you will be just wasting disc space, with little extra quality

Fantastic, thank you Ayzee. How about in "video controls"? Any filter settings you've found most successful?

And make sure you use the constant bitrate setting. I dont alter the filter settings

Thank you for your help, Ayzee, it is appreciated.

I use those bitrate settings and unfortunately my playback in Quicktime Pro is a bit choppy.

I actually have an iMac, 3.06Ghz core 2 duo processor, 2 GB RAM, and a GeForce 8800 GS 512 MB graphics card.

Should be plenty to play back the files smoothly in either Quicktime or VLC, correct?! But I'm not finding success for some reason.

Can anyone offer assistance here? Many thanks.

wow, I have the exact same mac, and had the same problem in VLC & Quicktime X once I did a fresh install of Snow Leopard.

Are you using Leopard or Snow Leopard?

The only way I was able to solve this was to use VLC version 1.0.2 (Intel 64bit)

This is a pretty old version of VLC but seems to be the only one that doesn't have the stuttering problem. The newest versions may solve this but i haven't tried, incase the very annoying problem comes back.

I read it is something to do with an apple codec, which quicktime always uses

One other thing I have noticed is my mac doesnt handle 1080i well and cant handle 1080p at all. So I generally stick with 720p sources.

Wow, OK, I'm using Leopard. So I suppose I should upgrade to Snow Leopard. I'll also seek out that version of VLC. Awesome, thanks a lot.....

As a sidebar - curious if you've tried to put the files into an MKV container? When I use TSMuxer it doesn't recognize the audio file, only the H264 file. So when I demux, I only get the resultant video file. I'm about to engage in a massive google/macrumors search to try to figure out why but thought I'd ask just in case :D

Thanks for your help!

Have you tried recording using the audio codec AAC as oppose to AC3 or vice versa?
Im sure I read that some containers don't like the AC3 codec

Im happy with the MP4 conversion that hdpvrcapture does, so have never tried MKV.

Thanks again for your help! Upgrading to Snow Leopard and downgrading my VLC player now plays those m2ts files perfectly smooth!

iMovie 11 or BTV Pro support

I'm curious about using either iMovie or preferably my old standby BTV Pro with something like this:

http://www.hauppauge.co.uk/site/products/data_hdpvr.html

Looking at the other responses, I can either buy Elgato's software or use HDPVRCAPTURE - but then it just records.

Basically what I'd like to do is connect my gaming system to my Macbook and view the livestream, then either take screenshots or record the video. BTV Pro and my old Firewire device worked, but the device has finally died after almost 5 years of use, and I need a replacement.

Suggestions? Remember I don't want to be forced to use the manufacturer's software - I'd like just to plug it right into iMovie 11 or BTV Pro and have at it. Thanks!

I've been using nothing but iMovie 11 and EyeTV 3 for my gaming channel. It's all you need. I'm looking forward to Final Cut Pro X though.
