I have this problem and I know exactly when it happened. My fault, but the camera lens is slightly elevated from the rest of the back. I haven't gotten it fixed yet but soon. Hopefully, it'll be covered under AppleCare.

Iphone 4 Scratched Camera Lens

I have exactly the same problem. 3 days with a naked iphone. Was careful
but somehow got a small scratch on the lens which results in a very fuzzy
spot right in the middle of all images. Very pronounced when zoomed in.

Hear hear!

Yes, I do indeed have a scratch over the lens and it is the only place I've got one.

Launch day iPhone 4. It's nekkid except for a back "screen" protector. It has taken a crap load of scratches - what it was intended to do. No issues so far and I am very happy :)

Unless you routinely slide your phone across sandpaper, it shouldn't affect you at all. Even a cracked lens takes surprisingly unaffected photos.

My phone has zero scratches. Well, it did until I took a look at the lens just now. Picture quality isn't affected in the slightest so I really don't care much. I wouldn't even call it superficial damage since I had to hold the lens 3" from my eye to even see the tiny scratches. Fact is, though, that the lens probably is more susceptible to scratches than the rest of the body.

No scratches on my phone. Because Apple has been so successful, it seems that jealous people have made the very successful products a target.

Why is that? Some do it to manipulate the stock, others are just Apple haters. Steve Balmer is an example.

I've had my phone since launch and can honestly say it's nearly 100% scratch free...

It's been naked since day on and the only scratch is on the chrome from when I dropped it getting out of the car...

It's so much more resiliant than my 3G which after 6 months you could barely see the apple logo on the back from all the scratches!

Who really believes these iPhone 4 screens are really scratch resistant? I added an invisible shield on my phone with a bumper, but can still scratches on my home button (it isn't covered). How could the home button possibly be scratched if all that usually touches it is mine and my gfs finger?

I bet without my protection film, the phone's screen would have little scratches from our nails or what not.

How many of you without a film have scratches on your LCD screen?

The home button is made out of plastic and the screen is made out of glass.

Trust me, the glass does not scratch easily.

Oh you can scratch the glass on it and it ain't that hard, I wouldn't have it naked. I just got 2 1/4" scratches on my 3gs screen :(

What are you doing with your iPhone? I've had every iPhone ever made and my screens are perfect.

I don't use screen protectors either.

Not doing anything, and you must not use it much or something lol. All it takes is it to be mixed in a pocket with something bad.

What gets me is how the display unit at ATT is all scratched up lol.

My girlfriend scratched hers with her diamond earings, but I don't wear those so my iPhones don't scratch.

I don't put it in pockets with other stuff.

Instead of yelling at each other and assuming that everyone who's got this problem is a no talent ass-clown and that everyone who says they don't have this problem is a lying Apple fanboy, can people start posting pictures like this instead?

That's my wife's iPhone 4. She's been extremely careful with it, only carries it in her purse pocket (by itself, and the pocket is lined with soft fabric), yet the camera lens cover is scratched to hell and back. That's because the lens cover glass (or whatever it's made of) is raised above anything else on the back of the iPhone, so it makes contact with whatever surface it has been placed on. This means that even the most benign movements result in that glass scraping against that surface.

I've looked at at least one other iPhone 4, and it's lens cover glass isn't raised; in fact, it is recessed a little. That leads me to believe this might be a manufacturing defect of some sort.

This can't be glass.

My phone's only a few weeks old and has never been dropped or placed on anything but a desk or in a pocket by itself. The PLASTIC lens cover is scratched to hell. There is not a single scratch on the rest of the back, even at corners where it comes into contact with things.

Pathetic.

I got the phone on launch day. I went from an Incipio case to the bumper when Apple was giving them out for free. Then last month, I switched to naked. I noticed the photo quality from the camera seriously went downhill starting last week... that's when I noticed all of the scratches on the camera!!!

Here are some pictures, taken side by side at the same exact time. One from my phone, the other from my wife's iPhone 4.

If I can find a good enough camera, I'll take some pictures of my camera lens.

What are the odds Apple will fix this for me for free? I'll probably drop by the Apple store to see what they say.

No scratches but I'm noticing dust in mine..

That's easy to fix, just take the back plate off and use compressed air to clean it. If still under warranty the Apple Store will do it for free in just minutes.

Same exact issue. Although I must be extremely careless in placing my phone down places. It ended up bothering me so much that I took the back off and popped off the lens cover entirely. It may be dangerous leaving the camera exposed (at least it's recessed), but better quality photos is well worth it in my opinion.
