Have any of the front facing camera claims been actual leaks?

the front camera will NOT be on the new iPhone, I don't know why people keep thinking that. we won't see a front camera until atleast 2011. this is Apple we are talking about.

Yeah, it's Apple we're talking about. The same company that puts a front-facing camera on all of their computers and monitors.

What are you referring to? I am talking about a patent in the last couple years that talked about actually putting image sensors in the liquid crystal to have the camera in the actual display of the iPhone for iChat.

The book? In which three authoritarian states rule the entire world and one of them (at least) uses telescreens to monitor every second of every day of every individual in the Party. The screen is two-way, as is the audio.

You need to read it. Everyone needs to read 1984.

I just finished it a week ago for a reading group project for school. Interesting thoughts... :D

What is your source? Os is this just another "Because I can't comprehend it" posts?

Ok, I am not one for novels really but technical reading. That is funny though that whenever it was written they foresaw 1984 as such a futuristic time haha. :p

I have said it before and will say it again. Bulleted this time for clarity:
  • It won't be free, and I am not paying more money to AT&T for a feature that I will never use
  • If it does get added, this will lead to an influx of "MySpace" pictures, which I do not want. Those emo self portrait pictures of people are just the absolute worst
  • Are you really that important, or self absorbed that you need a dedicated camera to focus on you?
  • Video chat is best left to computers, where you are LESS likely to be in a public place bugging the heck out of everyone around you
  • Who else has a video enabled device that you can talk to? Skype? Why not just use a laptop then?
  • Sounds dangerous, people not paying attention, yacking on their front facing video phones.
  • AT&T network is slow enough according to all the complaints I read (I haven't experienced the same), so you want a new iPhone introduced (increasing network load), and video chat (increasing network load MORE)
Its a terrible, useless, cost increasing idea for everyone all around. I appreciate that there are people who want video chat on their phone to talk to their *insert sob story here*, I just don't think its widely used enough to justify putting it in a device and charging everyone for that second camera. Plus, since there was no camera toggle in the leaked new camera interface, I don't see the implementation evidence. I mean, wouldn't the Camera app need a toggle switch to select the camera?

Video enabled iPhone

There's quite a bit of solid evidence to suggest that the forthcoming iPhone will feature a better camera and hardware to compress and encode video on the fly.

This would mean that such a phone could...
1) Record good quality video footage

2) Send that footage as a file. (MMS or Email attachment)

...and if there is enough network bandwidth it could also...
3) Stream compressed video live.

Most people think agree this functionality is a given in the new hardware.

So, to allow a two-way video chat, the only hardware needed is an additional fixed-focus, front-facing camera. Something Apple has thought of, because it appears in some of the Patent Applications.

It's not clear whether Apple would do this. But they may use a feature like this to differentiate the new phone.

On the downside, network operators think video chat is a "video call" and would want to charge extra for video calls made over the cellular network.

[*]Are you really that important, or self absorbed that you need a dedicated camera to focus on you?
It is not me, it is just that cameras love me. It is a gift and a curse. :)

[*]Who else has a video enabled device that you can talk to? Skype? Why not just use a laptop then?
I don't carry around a laptop on vacation or when I am spending time at a park or the seaside. The people I am speaking to, well, they can use a laptop, I wouldn't care.

Plus, since there was no camera toggle in the leaked new camera interface, I don't see the implementation evidence. I mean, wouldn't the Camera app need a toggle switch to select the camera?
Maybe they implemented it in Microsoft style. You toggle between cameras through the general settings, buried in menus 3 levels deep with 2 pop-ups asking for confirmation. :)

Sorry haha.

I am a well read person, just not in the area of novels and fiction.

You sound like my brother. Philosophy, history, theology, etc, he's probably the most well-read person I know. Throw him into a puddle of good fiction and he'd drown.

Don't forget the patent that talks about actually putting the camera in the screen itself so that you can video chat and look at each other eye to eye. That was a BIG piece of evidence.

wow that would be awesome! they should do that in their macbooks too :)

Definitely the reason Apple will leave it out this time around.
I guess all those "emo" kids will just have to wait another day to get an iPhone that will allow them to get the picture without taking 10 others that all cut off half their face or whatever.

Oh come on, stop being a spoilsport. Imagine the possibilities....

I'm pretty sure we will see a front facing camera. Not because I want one, but it's the right time to add one.

Does anyone remember the parts list leaked that said something about a 3.2MP camera, but also had another, 2nd camera listed as well?

Ya that's pretty much me. I guess it is kind of odd since I am a film maker, but to me novels are screen plays waiting to be made into movies haha. :D However, my films follow more of the historical route anyway.

Man those are some good points. Have you applied to be on the iPhone development team?

Well I guess you and your friends have enough time to video chat while the rest of us accomplish things with our lives. Texting and regular, quick, telephones calls will have to do.

Not to mention most people don't like looking up other people's noses, which is what would happen with a front facing video call - unless you held your arm up in front of your head...

Or you could just tilt your head down...

I don't understand why people are making a big fuss out of the actual use of a front-facing camera. They've been around for years and now all the sudden people don't like them because there's speculation it could be put on a phone they like? So what if you don't "like" it. Don't use it, no one is going to force you to. Apple isn't going to jack the price of the phone up $100 just because there's an extra camera. What harm does it do to you? Some people would really enjoy and use it.

And to the person above who's complaining about having to hold the phone out in front of you. Really? That's the same as saying "I don't want a camera on the back of my phone because it will only take a picture of the ground unless I hold it up." Gee no kidding, imagine that.

  • ...snipped as it's pointless...
...I appreciate that there are people who want video chat on their phone to talk to their *insert sob story here*, I just don't think its widely used enough to justify putting it in a device... and charging everyone for that second camera...

Video calling isn't widely used eh? Do you think this could be due to the fact that (at least in the us) of the 99M phones produced only 2 (which aren't currently produced) had this feature even built in? Oh yeah...and fact our networks in US stink for most part.

I think fact it doesn't exist explains why nobody is using it...DOH!!!!

Speak for yourself when you mention idiots staring into their phones while walking down the street having a video chat...where have you been the past 50 years? Don't you already this with other gizmo h-s people walk around town spaced out to?

Holding a "phone" device so it's tilted towards your face is actually a lot easier than holding it high up to your ear...try it some time.

Let's see...how much will the 2nd camera add to the cost...prob $10. To people paying $200-$500 and $40-$60/mo...there won't be a blink.

You know you want it and you're pissed your current phone doesn't have it (hey so am I).

Realize when you get your video calling...it will be another 10 years before it works as you would expect it to.

I, for one, would love to see the addition if a front facing iChat enabled camera. My wife & I have a son who is 9 months old now. I'm taking an extended leave of absence to be a stay-at-home dad - being able to videochat with "mom" while she's at work would be lovely and is something we've talked about since she was pregnant. I'm often out on walks with him and my laptop is not close by.

They said, I don't have much faith in AT&T's network and agree with many here that videochat is a generation or 2 away. It also gives Apple something new to roll out in the next few years. back video cam/editing/uploading program this time around yes, videochat?? We'll see.
