Shocked (but impressed) the A12Z snuck through.
Assuming that iPadOS 27 improves things (still to be determined, both performance and battery life, but some reports have been good vs 26, even on the first developer beta), leaving it behind when it’s 6 years old would’ve been controversial.

I’ve seen many, many, many complaints about people who use the 3rd-gen iPad Pro (A12Z, 2018) and definitely aren’t happy with how 26 runs. Many regrets about updating from 18, too.

Leaving both the 3rd and 4th-gen on the awful iPadOS 26, again, assuming that 27 improves things, would’ve been wrong. I never recommend updating. If it improves it, I’d recommend 27, coming from 26.

"iPadOS 27 raises the floor to the A14 Bionic chip or the M1 chip..." According to Apple's website the iPad 9, with its A13 chip, is included in the iPadOS 27 compatibility list.

even apple forgot the ipad 9 existed.

That said, we bought our daughter's ipad10 at the start of last year as school needed it; am glad we decided to spend the extra $80 and get teh 10th gen over the 9th gen.
But at the same time a bit peeved we couldn't wait an extra 2 months for the 11th gen that came out in march for the same price. The school insisted we'd need it at the start of the year, even though they didn't really start using it till about mid feb anyway 🙄

I wish I had stayed on 18 for all of my devices. Liquid glass drains battery too fast.
Yeah, Liquid Glass is awful in terms of performance, battery life, and imo, design.

I don’t update, but I’m glad I upgraded just in time. I keep devices for a long time on original versions and I don’t upgrade frequently. I upgraded from my Xʀ on iOS 12 to my 16 Plus which is still on iOS 18, and I got an 11th-gen iPad alongside my phone which also runs iPadOS 18. I have the newest possible pre-Liquid Glass combo.

My AW Series 4 hasn't had software updates for years. Can't even remember when it got cut off. Nothing added to watchOS or the Watch since has interested me enough to upgrade.

Does it still have the correct tine?

Or did it self destruct during the night?

The battery is pretty shot. 67% capacity and it barely makes it through a day with a workout. Case is banged up but still pretty presentable and the Milanese loop latch still holds beautifully - well made device for sure

I partially disagree. I can see why some people would want the latest watchOS features, but for the average user, I don’t think that’s enough of a reason to upgrade.
I had a late 2013 Intel iMac that lasted until I had to get a new Mac, which turned out to be an M1 iMac from 2021. So that meant my 2013 machine lasted eight years. I guess Apple’s decided that AI will now decide for it.

I wonder why the Apple Watch cut is so sharp. It seems that the New Apple Watch I have now is doing the same thing that my previous watches did years before.
I've got the original Apple Watch Ultra here, so I'm curious too. Main differences are a new SIP and double the storage. Maybe only the new SIP is fast enough for the models, and it wants the extra storage for them? Pure speculation, though.

I’m honestly glad my series 8 watch is no longer supported. I get so tired of the constant reminders to update my watch software every few months.

my series 7 is noticeable slower on 26, so I am not surprised that it's dropped by watchOS 27 but also baffled by how it got this bad in the first place. 18 and earlier were amazing on this device, what a pleasure to use. Just like your trusty iphone after several years of use, it's a former husk of itself

If OS 27 is the last the M1 gets I'm glad the last one it will have received is a bug fix/performance release. I still say the M1 gets at least one more update.
I meant it as M1 Pro/Max/Ultra unlikely going to get more updates than M1. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Crazy that OS updates are dropped for an $800 watch after 4 years but it really doesn’t matter to me, they seem to make things worse in general.
A device that can't run the latest OS does not become useless. That device keeps working just like it did before.

Enjoy your integrated ecosystem. Think you’ll get tired of it in the future because today it feels like a win and independence. Tomorrow it will be a prison.
And a waste of time dealing with Linux/hardware compatibility issues. The only way I would run Linux is if the hardware vendor guaranteed support, like Framework does.

Unfortunately, Frameworks laptops are insanely expensive for what they are once you check a few boxes in the configurator.
