I've been torn between the 12 mini and Pro. I want the smaller size, lighter weight, and lower price of the mini but use the telephoto lens much more than the ultrawide on my 11 Pro. Ideally, I would want a 12 mini that has a telephoto instead of ultrawide lens but we don't have that option.

The choice is made even tougher by the fact that the 12 Pro is a bit larger than the 11 Pro. That said, I hadn't noticed until Gruber's review that the 12 Pro is essentially the same width as the 11 Pro and thinner such that the majority of the increased size comes in the form of height, so that it doesn't feel larger in your hand (he compared it to the move from iPhone 4 to 5, which increased height only).

This detail makes me feel bit better about going with the Pro (which I pre-ordered and expect Friday)

No. I don’t allow others to do my thinking for me. What makes one person disappointed may be fine with me and vice versa.

What changed my mind was seeing the photos people were taking with the phone. The proof of the pudding is in the tasting and the LIDAR sensor is clearly making a big difference for low light shots. I know, for how I take photos, that I won’t be satisfied with the limitations of the regular 12.

How delightfully dismissive of you. I didn’t say anywhere that I let anyone else “do my thinking for me”. What changed my mind was seeing the photos people were taking with the phone. I wasn’t speaking to you with my reply. If I was, I would have quoted you. I made a general comment. There was no need for your comment to me.

iPhone XR and 11 owners will be very happy with the iPhone 12, massive improvement when you place the 12 and xr/11 side by side.

I dunno what your standards are, but an “87% improvement“ in low light performance certainly exceeds my definition of “slightly better”. That bigger sensor and image stabilization will be huge—commensurate with the size of that gigantic, barely portable slab of circuitry.
With a bigger sensor, larger pixels and sensor shift stabilization, it will absolutely perform better than the Pro, especially in low light.

I'll reserve my judgement for real life results. Easy to get caught up in specs and marketing numbers. No doubt it can perform better, but is having a couple low light photos look ever so slightly better in a side by side comparison worth carrying around a huge phone you don't want?

Coming from an 11PM, I was really waffling about going to the pro or the pro max. After seeing all of the reviews about the subpar (compared to the 11PM) battery life and the lukewarm reviews about the pro's camera (again, compared to the 11PM), I am glad that I did not pull the trigger for the pro. There is no doubt that the 12 pro (and the 12) are great phones, but if I am going to upgrade my 11PM, I might as well go big or not go at all!!

Fair enough. And my answer to your thesis question is a resounding NO. As I said on some other thread, if a phone is so big it requires a holster, fannypack or clown pants to carry, I may as well just bring my real camera with me. I like my phones portable.

Which is why I’m hedging towards the Mini. The only questions left to answer for me are, “Can I live with the Mini’s sub-par battery life, and how much will I miss the new Pro RAW format, and how much will I miss the novelty of being able to autofocus on a subject in total darkness?”

No. While I wish they didn’t reserve the best camera features for the phablet, I also know the performance improvement that’s being touted isn’t going to be that impressive because the size of the sensors at issue here are still so small.

Will it be better? Yes. Will it be better enough to justify carrying around a phone that size? Not likely.

The reviews almost convinced me to plan to return the 12 Pro & wait for the Max due to the differences in camera, but the size of the Max makes me think I'll be keeping the smaller Pro model after all.

I have ordered the 12 Pro too but I am waiting for reviews that compare both cameras. The reality is that now there is no review that shows the potential of each camera. Only for 12 Pro. With that comparative, we will see if the result is really worth it to go to the big size.

But why not just go to the regular pro then if it’s LIDAR you want? I’m not convinced the few extras on the max are worth the trade offs in size personally.

The bigger sensor should make a massive difference in low light photos, which is what the LIDAR is used for. So it’s the improvement of the LIDAR and the larger sensor working in tandem that should allow for really stunning low light photos.

your comment made it sound like the max is the only phone with LIDAR, deep fusion, etc. which was why I was confused. Yes the larger sensor will make a difference, how much of a difference is yet to be seen.

Unless you're selling the photos you take with your phone, I would imagine that the size of the phone you carry around constantly will affect your happiness more so than (more than likely) imperceptible differences in photo quality. Unless you are comparing comparable shots from both phones side by side, you probably won't even notice a difference. It seems unlikely that there are going to be very many circumstances where 1) the photo is unacceptable, 2) it would have been acceptable had it been taken with the pro Max instead, and 3) the photo is important enough for it to matter.

Buy the size that you prefer and you won't even care anymore after 2 weeks.

Not fully, but I am getting more and more curious about the LiDAR focusing on the Pro. I really don't want the extra weight of the pro but the reviews have me thinking.

Also, if you were happy with whatever phone camera you’ve been using up to now, then rationally speaking the existence of the 12 Pro Max shouldn’t suddenly make you unhappy. ;)

11 Pro. It’s actually the inclusion of Deep Fusion and Night Mode on all the lenses that has me wanting the Max. More data means better computational photography. I do understand that next year will probably be even better. I generally upgrade every year.

I found some full resolution sample photos from review hardwarezone did. I was actually very disappointed that Apple did nothing on hardware-side besides some improvements on ultra-wide.

The image quality is virtually the same on 11 and 12 pro.

Cheers, I hadn’t seen this review.

And this concludes my decision to return the 12 pro and get the pro max. Not much difference in photos. Curious to see sample of pro max.

I’m planning to get my first Max this year. I’ve been curious about the larger screen and the camera improvements seem solid. But if I had already ordered a 12 Pro I would just keep that. From the articles I’ve read the upgrades aren’t huge. I realize we don’t have actual comparisons yet. The 12 Pro already has upgrades over the 11 Pro and I’ve been thrilled with my 11 Pro pictures.
