In addition to using reporters w/iPhones, the newspaper also relies on the services of freelance photographers, many of whom (I'm assume) would be using DSLRs.

Many of whom are also possibly their former staff photogs. 🙁

The Nokia !020 seems to be an early precedent for eventual DLSR/smartphone parity, at least practically speaking. Much more convenient, and software will make up for many of the hardware deficiencies.

Software can't compensate for physics; many more photons can be collected with a bigger sensor and optics.
