Won't matter since lithium ion batteries charging ability is controlled by the onboard control circuits. No matter how much current you feed the iPad (and any lithium ion battery) it will only allow charging at a controlled rate for safety reasons.

Article

Not that I want to go around calling anyone liars but that article is contradictory to what thousands of r/c hobbyists do on a regular basis, myself included. I have a charger that I can select the rate at which to charge batteries, Nicd, li-ion, and lipo. I can charge a li-ion battery at its normal charge rate or I can fast charge by increasing the charge rate and have it ready in half as much time. So the part about any li-ion battery isn't true. However yes fast charging does stress the batteries out more.

I always thought it was a strange decision to use the dock connector to charge a device with such a large battery.

They patented MagSafe for iPad but haven't used it yet.

10W charging a battery of this size is going to be slow, they can do some work on the inside to improve the charge time but the design itself is limited.

As the iPad grows up I think moving to real charger like the MacBook Air line is inevitable.

My MacBook Air with a 45W charger and 50Whr battery charges in less than 4 hours.

Charge times on the new iPad will probably be in the 7 to 8hr range even if Apple does some magic on the inside.

This is true.

On the other hand, all of my iDevices (iPod, iPhone, iPad) charge significantly quicker when attached to my 25 Watt-capable car charger...

Let's indeed hope so. But you never know...

I agree we do not know but in the mean time, lets not FREAK OUT till we get our devices on Friday!

Even if it takes a little longer, I could care less as long as it charges to 100% while I sleep!:p

I find it hilarious (yet not surprising) that people are saying things liike "duh...charge it before you go to bed".

***** happens. You use it all day and the next and you forget to hook it up to a power source before you crash for the night. Your iPad is nearly dead and you have to get going early the next day. How much juice can I squeeze out of a 1 hour charge?

Charge time is an absolutely valid inquiry given the same 10W adapter supplied. However I agree with the same people who say "wait and see". No panic until we have it in our hands.

All I can say for people who forget to charge their new iPad 3 before they go to bed is **** happens!:p

To be fair I was looking at the specs on the store page where you can compare them and it doesn't say the battery type

But that is good to know. I'm tempted to solder an Apple dock connector to some banana plugs and charge it on my r/c charger at 4A. Could also do 5A at 7.4v.

I wouldnt do this. The other factor you have not considered is that the ipad connector is likely maxed at 2.1A due to the small size of the pins and wires. You will likely melt the connector if you put that much amperage through it.

The connectors on Macbooks is much larger and was designed for a higher charge rate.

At some point I would guess that Apple changes the standard dock connector to get around the charge rate issue and to also get around the limitations of the data rate.

Wow, exactly the response I expected! Love your caps usage....really emphasizes your points!
