I used to be "that guy", but I quickly learned that either they agree with you already and you're preaching to the choir, or they don't really want to hear it so I keep my mouth shut.

There are so many people using Android devices that obviously they are "good enough" for many.

A lot of the people who shy away from Apple do so not necessarily because of the technology but because of the philosophies that Apple subscribes to -- they don't like the walled garden, they don't like that the iPhone doesn't offer X feature like an SD card slot, and up until just now, they didn't offer any bigger screen size. Apple has always taken the stance of "This is what you get, you will learn to love it". Granted, I think they are often right, but not everybody does.

I own mostly Apple gear, and despite looking like an Apple fanboy, I choose the stuff because it works best for me. For example, I'm typing this message on a 2013 13" Retina MacBook Pro. My original plan wasn't to buy this Mac. In fact, it was just the opposite. I had decided to buy a Windows 8 ultraportable. But after 2 days with it, I was so fed up with its quirks that I brought it right back to the store and walked out with this Mac.

Or, you know, they just don't like the price. I know Samsung flagships now have MSRPs that are same as Apple's but they're far easier to find discounted compared to iPhones. :p

Most of the people I know who are enthusiastic about Android don't care about the costs. They spend much more than us iPhone folks do when you consider the frequency of upgrades. It does come down to the freedom -- especially since the jailbreaking scene isn't quite what it used to be

Those are folks who enjoy tech, though. Speaking as someone who has, at one point, bought over $2K worth of factory unlocked Android phones in the span of a year, I can definitely understand. However, for majority of users (particularly those who pay full price for their phones), I reckon price is a big motivating factor.

I was always a Nokia guy. I loved Nokia, always had a Nokia, thought they were the best. When the first iPhone came out, I thought it was way too expensive. Then they became more and more popular, but I was above it all, me and my Nokia. I got the flagship Nokia N97. It was gonna be the most awesome phone and I wasn't gonna follow all the iPhone lemmings. Well, after going through 3 N97s, I broke down and got an iPhone 3G. I immediately couldn't understand why I had been so against iPhones. I felt like an idiot. Haven't bought anything but an iPhone since. There's a reason every phone is compared to an iPhone. They are simply the best.

I've switched a few times, mainly because my carrier of choice didn't officially carry the iPhone. Switched to the G2, the HtC One S, Galaxy S2, Galaxy S3. Needless to say each time I attempted to use an Android device I found it frustrating and sloppy compared to iOS and always went back. There was a point where I had even settled for using an iPhone on my carrier over Android despite being limited to EDGE only speeds.

Since TMO got the iPhone last year, I'll never use an Android device again.

not me... theres plenty of friends with Androids and having played with their devices, *PAUSE*, just didnt like it... didnt feel right...

that and all my stuff is on iTunes... I've done the research of transferring contacts and music from iTunes over to Android but...guess its out of laziness... why mess with something thats working fine...

never understood all the people with iTunes issues... my contacts are there... my apps are there... my music is there... I can easily swap out playlists and apps whenever I want...

I had multiple iPhones over the years from the 3G, 4, 4s, and 5. In February this year, I finally got tired of the small screens and made a switch to a Note 3. I knew at the time if Apple came out with a larger iPhone that I would likely switch back though. I've liked my Note 3 and use the stylus regularly. But I've never gotten used to the UI and hate all the bloatware they install that you can't get rid of. Plus, having two iPads it only makes sense with the new continuity features to switch back. The Note 3 was a nice change of pace, but I'm ready to make the switch back with the 6+.

Switched to Blackberry after my iphone 3g contract ended in 2010. Worst decision ever. God these phones are an abomination

Stayed with it for six months until I finally caved and bought an iphone 2g (the original iphone) to sit out my 2 year bb contract.

I've never touched another brand since and I'm not planning to.

Have you ever been "that guy"?

I've switched between android and iPhone many times, longer in the android camp though.

There really is no Apple to Apple comparison. They each do their own thing and do them well.

I switch based on boredom and to see how far progress was made on each platform. There are things I wish iOS had from Android (simple things, like move an app anywhere I want on screen so I can show wallpapers off). There are things I wish Android had that iOS has, like iMessages or a keyboard that just works!

I also will add this.

When you renew a contract or plan, your given 14 days to evaluate (most carriers). Use that time to experiment, try a new phone and go for a ride. If you don't like it, exercise your right to return the device!

If it's after 14 days? Say a month or two? Throw it in Swappa or Craigslist! You'll get 99% of the cost back and just buy another phone outright.

Life is about experiences, your doing yourself a disservice by not experiencing what others have to offer.

I was always too scared to try switching, lol. I have invested so much money into the iTunes store, and most of my products that I own are Apple and are all in sync with one another thanks to iCloud, so I feel like if I purchased a different phone, my synchronization would start to fail.

This.

Sad as it sounds, too much invested, too much reliance on iMessage, iCloud.

iMessage! I mean ffs... I use that for free picture messages ALL the time, I send stuff to people I know will be out of signal but on wifi ALL the time.

I like the hardware-look of other phones, but I don't think I could switch :(

I had a lapse in judgment back in 2011 when I switched from the 3GS on AT&T to the HTC Rezound on VzW. I was tempted by the promise of 4G LTE speeds, a larger 720p display (highest pixel density available on an American phone at the time), and the features of Android.

I ended up having the phone for less than two weeks before returning it. I couldn't get any reception in half the buildings I went into, battery life was abysmal (can't blame them, as it was the early days of LTE), and Android's many features often conflicted with each other, and the experience just wasn't as smooth as it was on iOS.

After returning the Rezound, I upgraded to the 4S, which had been out for about a month by that time, and haven't looked back.

Someone I knew switched to the Galaxy 4 or whatever it's called.

I didn't say a word.

A couple of weeks later she threw it at the wall and went back to the iPhone.

Yep, I am 'that guy' as well. The iPhone 3G was my first smartphone. I was very close to buying a Blackberry at the time until this was announced. One of my friends had the original 2G. I couldn't afford the $500 price tag as he got his as a Christmas present.

Since then, I upgraded to a 4S which I still use that is until my 6+ 64GB comes in which is still slated to ship 11/9-11/27. :(

That same friend since then went to a Galaxy S4 and has been trying to talk me into joining the Android bandwagon. I'll stick with iPhones for the reasons stated above. Everything, (apps, music etc....) is already integrated onto my devices (MacBook, iPad) and the way I see it, there's nothing groundbreaking that Android offers that appeals to me.

I have had iPhone since the beginning as well, it was actually this past year that I was thinking about being that guy and switching to either an S5 Or Note 4. Ultimately, I decided on staying apple and purchased a 6+, probably the best decision I have made yet. I love the phone, the best feature is the display and battery life. My brother in law actually has been iPhone since the beginning as well, and he has made the final decision and is purchasing the new note at the end of this month. I will let you guys know how that turns out..... lol

I haven't had buyers remorse on any phones.

I have definitely never been "that guy". I don't care enough about what other people buy to push the issue... And I find "that guy" so annoying, I just couldn't subject anyone I know to that "I told ya so" silliness over a phone. If someone switches over to something I have & love - I say "Isn't it awesome?!" Yeah, I don't ever want to be "that guy" and yes, let's be honest, no one can stand him/her.

I'll explain:

I have had an iPhone since the very beginning, in fact, the iPhone was my very first smart phone. Because of this, switching to a different phone has been out of the question.

I suppose my question is; have any of your friends/family tried switching to a different phone after having an iPhone, and regretted it? Or have you tried switching personally and regretted it?

I advised my friends/family that told me that they were switching that they will regret it (they told me that I would be wrong, and that it isn't cool being "that guy"), and ironically, I was right every time.

Edit: Yes, wrong situation to use the word "ironically". It's been a long day, give a guy a break!

How can you advise people on something you have little knowledge in?

I've had every iPhone since the beginning, but I too did have a lapse in judgment a few years ago, and decided to try android to see what it was like.

I got a Galaxy S2 Skyrocket (one of the first ones with LTE at the time, around the same time as the Rezound), and while I liked the data speed, the build quality was just horrible, and that touchwiz, ugh. I ended up buying 2 extra batteries and an external charger, and kept switching out the batteries constantly, lol. And then the micro-usb port died. All within a couple months.

So then it was on to the HTC One X which came out right then. This one was marginally better, the HTC Sense wasn't quite as bad as the touchwiz, but again the battery life, and no switching out batteries on this one because of the built-in battery. And same frikkin micro-usb port that started dying on me again. And of course not all my iTunes library made the trip over, and not all contacts, and had to decide if I wanted to start over with Google Play store and Amazon.

So back to iPhone! Just too much of a hassle, and I don't NEED all those settings. Like I tell people, it's great if you're a tinkerer and the kind of person who wants to spend hours customizing every little thing about the phone. But for most people I don't feel it's worth it.

Me too. And it's a deliberate strategy of Apple's to make their ecosystem more "sticky".

I'm 14, my parents were letting me get a smartphone, my whole family was bashing Apple (looking back, for ridiculous reasons) and I pretty much got tempted into getting a Galaxy S4.

I had used iOS on an iPod touch third gen since iOS 3, and an iPod fifth gen since iOS 6, also an iPad mini with retina display. I loved Apples ecosystem and everything but decided that I wanted to try something new. I greatly looked forward to the customization possible with Android, but quickly found out that all of it was overrated in my honest opinion. I hated the experience Android offered. Luckily, my dad had an upgrade and he let me use it to get an iPhone 6 and he ecstatically took my GS4. Couldn't be happier.

Might I say that I find your use of the word ironic to be ironic. :p

cool story bro.

My family has used several different manufacturers devices but I never regret a purchase because I make sure I'm buying what I want. Only reason to regret anything is if you're doing something you don't want to be doing..... I would think it would be that way with every one in the world..... but I guess using logic is just too tough for some.
