I dropped out of law school, quit my job, and biked from California down to Perú (my bike broke down in Lima). My house got repossessed because I couldn't continue making payments (I was working as a teacher while in Perú). I'm back working my old job because sometimes you have to get back to reality and realize you need money.

Such is life?

My wife and I up and moved out of Northern VA, where we grew up, when we decided we couldn't handle the awful traffic any more (Interstate 95? That's a freaking joke). We pointed to a map and hit Colorado Springs. We flew out to look for houses, ended up renting for a year while looking and bought a house the next. We love it but we do miss our families. Still, it was a hughly eye opening experience. I went from a son to a husband and father. Of course now that I see the world from a different perspective I'm amazed at how many idiots are running things. But I digress.

I say DO IT! I can tell you one thing, you won't regret it.

It all depends on your field of work. If you can find a job easily in other places then moving straight up can be feasible. I've never done it myself but sometimes I wish I did. My dream is to find a job in CA and move there. I will probably spit at the map of MA every single day I live in CA.

It's kind of funny, one of my friends moved to Boston from Southern California because he didn't like California. He, apparently, moved because he wants snow, a lot of people in California annoy him, and prefers Boston's atmosphere to SoCal's.

Yes. From the USA to London, England. It was a very difficult decision to make in ways I won't begin to explain but it was the change I needed and I don't regret it at all. (Even when the weather pisses me off. :p)

If you feel that implacable urge to leave, make your plans the best that you can and have some belief in yourself that you can succeed wherever you want to go. A determined mind has a lot of power to make things work.

Not just upped and gone, but relocated several times during my life, mostly in the UK.

Stockport -> Southampton -> Leicester -> London -> Durban (South Africa) -> London again.

Next will be -> Barcelona (Spain)

When I was in the 20s, then, I did not hesitate to pack up and move as long as I have a paying gig in place at the end of the road. Looking back, it worked well for me as I did that several times.

Now, once I have a established residence with all the properties / possessions which come with it, it would be difficult to pull that off anymore.

It's worthwhile to take chances while you are still young.

My current and past employers have been multinational corporations and there is always a possibility I may need to be an "expat" in another country, which I don't mind as long as I am compensated with an expat pay package.

Looks like things are working out for me in Charlotte. I have 4 8x8 boxes, my dog, and my tv ready to be packed/moved. Cross your fingers for me if you would.
