I haven't had issues with the iPhone itself but the 3G network is flakey, at least in Chicago. Calls fail all the time for me so I generally just leave my phone set to Edge unless I need to access the 'net.

You seem to be more interested in trolling than actually making a decision.

Clearly you've already decided. You don't want to buy an iPhone 3G, so don't. End of discussion.

I love how everything is an attack on here. All I decided on is not to buy one today, I have an iPhone, and I love it, loved it for a year. Might buy one tomorrow, who knows. I'm just wondering if there are any people with 3Gs that haven't had any problems, because it doesn't seem like many.

Although obviously there are going to be more people with problems frequenting the forums but who knows. I was just sitting at work, bored, TROLLING the Apple store, thinking about buying one. Take it easy.

I voted yes, but my problems have consisted of two instances in which my phone just kept dropping calls for about three minutes at a time, and a few instances in which data just would not load, notwithstanding the fact that I had a strong 3G signal. But those minor problems don't change the fact that I love the phone and would buy it again.

No problems whatsoever. I don't consider a few cases of screen jump or a few really long backups problems, in the grand scheme of things. I've had two dropped calls since I got it over a month ago, which is great, and great 3G coverage. I'm thrilled with it. :)

Nevermind the flames, suit up and hang in there. I definitely appreciate your thread, as I am a 2G iPhone owner considering a 3G, but I need to hear from people who have actually owned the 3G to chime in and share their experiences. Especially the bad ones, we all know what's great about the iPhone. But I need to know whether the bad outweighs the good, just as you seem to want to know.

As of right now the actual voting results don't bode well for my decision, but I'm definitely appreciating the positive responses so far. Please keep them coming.

I have experienced a fair share of problems.

Returned two devices thus far, but fortunately my genius bar experience has been admirable.

Great device but it definitely isn't more reliable (hardware or software) than my treo and not even in teh same league as my BB.

That said, it's the best device on market bar none (havent played with the Bold yet though;))

I voted Yes as I've had two issues -

First has been the 2.0.x software bugs that everyone has experienced - Safari crashes, 3rd party apps occasionally not launching, etc. Minor stuff that's been getting better over the 2.0.1 and 2.0.2 updates. So, not a serious issue, and one that Apple presumably will resolve with future updates.

The second is periodic lousy 3G cell service (U.S. customer via AT&T) - either low bars where I'd expect a good signal, or VERY slow data rates (or complete time-out failures) where the phone is showing 4-5 bars of service. Forcing the phone to EDGE always results in reliable data service.

However, today I was at my local Apple store at about 5:45 PM (for assistance with my wife's MacBook's optical drive) and I checked out the other iPhones on display. My phone gave me essentially the same 3G data speed as the floor models, rush-hour time data/call surge and all, so I'm convinced that my phone is functioning to proper specifications - or at least to the same specs as all the others and that my unit isn't defective.

With regard to whether or not you should buy the phone. IMO, if you didn't have an iphone, I would say yes, go get it at your earliest convenience. But if you already have an iphone, you might as well wait, because the 3g is unreliable since 2.0.2, as is GPS. I would wait until 3g is being reported to be "fixed" by the majority, instead of "broken" by the majority. The gps is just about useless without turn by turn (or a better implementation of maps even) anyway. I really don't see any reason to upgrade right now with 3g being mostly not working.

However, when 3g WAS working, I couldn't imagine what it was like to have to use edge all the time (never had first gen iphone), because the 3g speed was so much more enjoyable to use (close to wifi for me). I literally didn't even try to use data services if I was on edge, because it was painfully slow. But 3g was awesome. So, IMO, yes, it is worth it, but not at the moment.

I had a big ol' speck of dust right in the middle of the screen, under the glass, after one month of use. After looking closer, there were a dozen very tiny little specks of dust at the bottom left corner of the screen too. I took it to an Apple Store and they swapped it out for a new one with no questions asked. I hope that this new one does not exhibit the same problems.

Aside from that, I had no issues at all. Battery life and 3G reception has been great.

Regardless of problems you may experience, it is 100% absolutely a good idea for you to buy one. It's the greatest mobile device out there by far. Apple will take good care of you if you have any issues.
