Looking to Finally purchase my first Mac... Only 1 question... Is there anyone who owns a Macbook Air that can say that there has been any time u regretted not having a cd/dvd drive??? Thats my only concern right now..

Buy an external superdrive ... I did.

Only gets used a couple of times a month ... but useful to have and does not cost much.

I have an external drive for use with my MBA and desktop PC, so far I used it three times.

I'm just so happy to get rid of the noisy and heavy dvd-drive.

And I actually did not touch any dvds, cds in 2 years!

Have you regretted not having cd/dvd drive?

What are those? Seriously, not in the least bit. I bought the Apple external DVD drive and used it maybe twice in the year that I have had my 11" 64GB MBA. I'm running the basics along with MS Office 2011. Keep all my docs on a jump drive. My HDD backup is a 64 GB jump drive. I love the light weight since I travel a lot.

I'd love to have a cassette tape player in my MBA

I've got a reel to reel if you are interested. LOL

If I had no other machine and no external then yes there's times I'd miss it, but I've never felt need to have one permanently attached as part of the machine Hooking up external once or twice a month, or making an image of an ocassional disc onto a USB stick from another machine is no biggie.

I've been a pc person up to 3 weeks ago and switched over and got a MBA. I noticed i've never used the OD (dvd-drive) on my pc, except for watching dvd's.

I did, however, purchased a SuperDrive, just so that I can encode my dvd collection and put a few movies at a time when I travel for work so that I never have to carry dvd's with me. Never do I plan on ever taking the SuperDrive with me. With Christmas upon us, I have a tendency to receive quite a bit of DVD's. Not sure how this started, but people must think I'm a movie buff, which I'm not.

On my previous laptop that had a DVD drive I never used it, perhaps a handful of times.

It instantly adds bulk to a laptop so for those reasons I'm glad the air doesn't have one and for the times where I need a drive I have an external one.

Theres not many things about nowadays that need to use a cd to be installed, most things can just be downloaded from the internet.

I have an external CD/DVD/Bluray drive. I can say that I would feel very uncomfortable if I didn't have access to one (I don't carry it around when I travel) because having one gives me the ability to boot off a CD if I ever needed to. Installing various software (Windows 7 on bootcamp) is also convenient since if already have the physical media - why wait 2-3 hours for a download and format a USB drive when I can connect a optical drive via usb, pop in a disc, and go? What if I am in a situation where internet was not readily available?

I just like keeping my options open. Some could care less.

I bet you can find someone who said this. Not me though.

I did pick up a third party usb dvd burner for ~$25 but have used it maybe two times.

Apart from those two occasions (both at home) I have no use for an optical drive. Why on earth would I want the added bulk and weight for something I almost never use?

nope. not once.
i remembered that i had audacity on a floppy disk and i was miffed it wasn't compatible with the air:D
on a serious note, as other users have said, most things are downloadable anyways :)

I very rarely use the Superdrive even when I had one. I can see it coming in handy occasionally, but I have my older Macs to use for those times.

Nop.

I have a Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive set aside (cant remember the last and only time i used it).

i was not aware this even worked with the AIR. my HD-DVD has been dust gathering for a couple years now ... What a bloody waste.

But this got me thinking. I know OSx has no support for Blueray. but if I plugged my SATA Blueray drive through external enclosure, with Win7 installed would i be able to use my macbook to watch Bluerays if i plugged it via HDMI to a projector?

Yes. Any external BR drive will work. You can even watch them in OSX but it takes a couple of steps.

Evidently, you didn't like GGJ's tip enough to actually follow it. Your post still has the lousy title.

I have been on varying types of forums. Some dealing with cars some dealing with antique tractors and other various types of forums but most seem to have the same problem with a few people that jump all over someone for asking a question that has been answered before. I have use the search before but some topics, like this thread are just asking for opinions and possibly just wanting to interact with others on the forums. I have noticed that there is a corelation between forums that have more of an older member like the antique tractor forum. They seem more tolerant and helpful. Besides all this, his title was pretty specific. I surprised that anyone had trouble figuring out what his title was saying. Actually I should have ignored the criticisms like most everone else did but I didn't.

Only time I somewhat missed the super drive was when I was installing Vista and then upgrading to 7 with the upgrade CD. But that wasn't really a problem since I could just go into Disk Utility on my Pro and create an image and use a USB to install everything on my Air.

This is one thing I knew when getting a MBA that I would not miss. Far from a concern for me!

I have a desktop Windows machine at home that I can burn CDs/DVDs from. Also can use my older MBP to load a disc remotely for my MBA from.

:D

not at all... i can't recall the last time i use a dvd or cd....

I only used it, when i'm doing a reinstall on my office's desk tops...

I only have two dvd drive out of ten desk top that i have in my office...
