Perhaps, but then the avatar requirement that rewards participation shouldn't be considered discipline when you're not interested in the topics here at MacRumors.

I'm interested in them, just not the spamming areas that people use to get their postcount up.

10k. It's kind of crazy the number of people here with 5k posts. I mean, some users are already passing 35k!
I say reserve avatars only for the moderators and the top 1000 posters :D

I have been on very active forums where only moderators had Avatars. Made them stand out well. Not opposed to this.

I don't care really but how come liking a comment isn't rewarded? It's participation. Perhaps 10 likes = 1 post. The likes add to the discussion, at least to me.

counter point: Then people would be like-whores and like everything just to tally likes, thereby cheapening the discussion.

point: Dang it. At least I'm one closer to 30! (I'm a realist; no way will I ever achieve avatar status.)

I agree

Rather than ending the post right here I usually just hit the like button.
In my race to get to 100 posts I have noticed the quality of my posts decreasing over the last year or two:)

Anyway, at this rate I should get my avatar in about 15 or 20 years:rolleyes:

I agree with the OP. I see no reason to make policies that result in new users feeling unwelcome. I hope this site will reconsider that policy. It's dumb.

I've been a member for 7 years now and have not reached the post requirements. It's just one of those things. If you post regularly, you will reach the requirement in no time. If not, then I don't see the problem considering you have to post to display your avatar prominently.

I agree, just contribute however frequently you like and it will naturally happen. I agree it's a little bit of an arbitrary rule and that avatars help provide that extra personal touch, but at the end of the day I never saw it as that big of a deal.

paid membership and avatar

Does a paid membership waive the 500 post limit to have a custom avatar?
Thanks

It so weird...here I see a 3 page topic on the minimum post count to display your avatar being too excessive, but I literally just realized my avatar wasn't showing up in my posts. I guess that's because I tend to focus on the content of a post and not just the silly little icon on the upper-left. You won't have to worry about your post count so long as you keep your priorities dedicated to contributing to the forums as a whole.

I'm new to MacRumors, but I really enjoy the website so I know I'll reach the minimum post-count for avatar display in no time. Even if I don't get there very soon, people can see my pretty face on my profile all the same! :p

And contributing members get a bigger avatar too, as far as I remember.
A while ago mods where also listed as demi-gods, probably due to some forum software setting, that has now been corrected.

Demi's don't get larger avatar sizes.

The removal of demi-god was a collective choice by us to remove confusion about who the staff were. Sometimes, members confused contributing member's with the demi-god title with moderators because we also had that as part of the title. We opted to remove that part for simplicity's sake.

Then I am mistaken. Thought about contributing for just that and employ my violence towards women avatar again, which was really just showing women from the movie Amelie, which can be understood as violence to some.

Guess I have to switch fora now.

I think it's great, but I'm old school like that.

But in today's world of instant-gratification, posts like the OP's don't really surprise me. I also find it funny that the people complaining about it have a join date of only 2-3 years ago.

I used to think I would never reach 500 posts, but once I did I didn't even care about having an avatar anymore! I don't even know how long I've been eligible, but I'm at 753 posts now and I still haven't bothered to add one. :p

I'm more curious about how many members who could have avatars, don't.

Probably more than you think.

I didn't get an avatar for a very long time (a number of years) after I qualified for one. In fact, it was only when I began to get involved in the MRville WW games on this forum that I decided that an avatar might be a useful thing to have.

I was in the exact same position for a number of years after I qualified for the privilege of being able to upload an avatar.

I thought the same. Then I added a quick avatar off the web, and never got round to changing it! Maybe I will one day.

I'm certainly one of them.

I post here somewhat infrequently now, so I don't really feel justified in having one. I mostly just interject my opinions into news articles nowadays, so it's not like I'm really contributing much to the community as-is.

Others probably feel the same, or are just lazy.
