I'm certainly one of them.

I post here somewhat infrequently now, so I don't really feel justified in having one. I mostly just interject my opinions into news articles nowadays, so it's not like I'm really contributing much to the community as-is.

Others probably feel the same, or are just lazy.

Leaving your opinion in news articles is contributing to our great community, and it is appreciated, regardless of how much or often you post. :)

I think it's good. I would put it around 1,000 though.

I think the level is so high, it would dissuade more then encourage participation. I don't think you want to make so exclusionary that people feel that those who have them are cliquish.

As a suggestion, why not let people with less than 500 post be able to chose from a set of site avatars while people with 500 or more post can use their own custom avatars ?

Why would you do that? At that count, even more people would never get one or take many more years to qualify.

Discouraging people is an interesting point I had not thought of. The reason I like it to be somewhat high is it shows me who's on the forum more. And when I see soon to be waste land threads or a post I simply think is way off I look to the Avatar to see if it's a possible troll. There is the whole forum ranking system but I'm often on the mobile site and don't see those. But the lower count does have the benefit of helping me learn usernames.

What about new members who come here for help?

I think looking at the avatar to determine status isn't something I'm willing to do. We all started off with zero posts, if everyone largely ignored people who didn't have an avatar, we'd not be encouraging too many people to join since their queries would not receive the responses they were hoping for.

I think the best approach is to help someone with a stated problem, regardless of their post count. If they have an interesting point, feel free to discuss it. If you think they're trolling, then report the thread and the moderation team will deal with the issue in accordance with our guidelines.

I agree wholeheartedly.

The only reason I look at an avatar it to quickly recognize a members' post in a thread, especially if I'm scrolling quickly through one.

Requiring an even higher post count to qualify and to pass judgment on a member with no avatar as a potential troll is unwise and unfair.

Agree completely with both posts.

Not only did we all start with zero posts, most of us who actually registered to join (as opposed to lurking which a number of us, myself included, did for quite a while before actually registering), in fact, joined in order to be able to ask a question in the hope of receiving an answer (and one which was preferably courteous, civilised and informative).

Certainly, I don't use avatars to find (or not) as the case may be, individual posters. I look at sub-fora, and threads within them, and - irrespective of numerical post status - if the thread, topic, or post, are of interest (or ask a question which I am able to answer), I will venture a reply.

That's why I joined MacRumors. I was relatively new to the world of Apple and Macintosh's and wanted to upgrade the hard drive in my first MacBook Pro, a 2,2 from 2006. An avatar wasn't something I even thought about back then, because my priority was seeking assistance with my laptop.

Once that was settled, I stuck around, asking questions on various things and answering other's questions where I thought I could be a help. Four years later, I'm still here asking questions and providing answers where I can. I've also made several friends along the way, which is highly valued and priceless to have. #

Much the same story here; I joined to ask a question about my new MBP - which I had bought a few months earlier - lingered, and remained.

And, as a number of you well know, in common with your good self, I seem to have acquired a few much cherished friends en route, whose online company has enriched my life and whose observations and posts I have come to hugely enjoy.

It's only certain post that get the avatar look.
